View Full Version : Pam Shriver: Expect a Suarez-Capriati Final

None of the top five seeds are in the semifinals, so it makes picking anyone to win Thursday's matches a little bit of an uneasy process. It's very contagious when upsets happen; it starts to feed on itself. So any prognosticator feels a little wary.

http://adsatt.espn.starwave.com/ad/sponsors/AMERICAN_EXPRESS/May_2004/amer-300x250-0008.gif (http://log.go.com/log?srvc=sz&a=1&drop=0&addata=1331:169:159014:169&guid=073BF936-9C25-41C9-B7D1-25FDC1F4BDBA&goto=http://www.ticketmaster.com/artist/807197)
However, the French crowd will strongly be behind former champion Jennifer Capriati, who is making a comeback on their turf. Some of them will even remember watching her break out at Roland Garros at age 14.

No. 6 Capriati and No. 5 Anastasia Myskina of Russia are neck and neck in the rankings. However, Capriati seems back on track and getting some big wins again. Her experience and temperament when the match gets close are better than Myskina, who sometimes gets emotional.

If Myskina can come out and play a mentally mature match, she certainly has the tools to win: speed and ground strokes as devastating as anyone on both sides. However, her serve sometimes turns out to be a weakness.

With that in mind, pick the proven horse and that's Capriati.

The other semifinal pits doubles specialist Paola Suarez, seeded 14th, against Russian Elena Dementieva, seeded ninth. In this situation, it's so easy to go with the favorite, which would be Dementieva.

Dementieva's serve looks like it's holding up, but it's still a fragile part of her game. Of concern for Suarez, is how much doubles she's going to play because she's also in the women's doubles semifinals. Suarez played a three-set doubles match on Wednesday, but it was early enough it shouldn't become a problem in singles Thursday. Her doubles experience could help, too, as her aggressiveness at net could make this a close match.

A lot of times, a match like this comes down to the little things. Dementieva's only experience in a Grand Slam semifinal was at the U.S. Open four years ago. Suarez has never been in this position in singles, so Dementieva might feel she has an edge over Suarez in this situation. Plus, Suarez is used to having someone alongside her in those moments.

But you have to hand it to Suarez that she's 27 years old and now playing her best tennis. It's enjoyable and refreshing to see a player do that. Also impressive, is how very few unforced errors she's making.

For that reason, expect Suarez to win what will likely be a close, nerve-wracking match.

with her cock up of the semi finals, i'm sure Jennifer is cursing her ass out right now :)

i fully expect an All Russian final. i did anyway, but the fact that Pam picked the other two...well...their chance is good as gone. :)

I guess that seals it that it will be an all-Russian final.

Oh well lets bet on Myskina and Dementieva then........Suarez is better than Momo? Jens is a toss up which Jen turns up at set points and how many UE Myskina makes..

ESPN tennis analyst Pam Shriver won 21 singles and 112 doubles crowns, including 22 Grand Slam titles

WorldWar24, tennis analyst with 0 singles and 0 doubles crowns, including 0 Grand Slam titles, thinks Pam Shriver is clueless :D

Me thinks it is going to be Suarez vs Myskina, but since Pam picked Suarez and Caps, then there's a huge chance it will be an all-russian final

Playing NOT to lose

How boring, I hope Demetieva wins. I like a gal who goes for it. too bad she don't have a serve.

Pam's is forecasting based on who's the least likely to choke. She's forgotten
the fitness factor. Myskina and ED can run laps around Jenn, and they
have this week. She was huffing and sucking air, ED & Myskina haven't
even broken out in a tiny sweat.

Sorry, but I think fitness will be as important today as experience. Pam
in her old age, let's her personal opinion of players get in the way of
just pure match forecast and commentary.

uhhhh and pams one sided comments continue... here is my take on her and the semifinals tomorrow

honestly, i dont think that the lady likes anyone in tennis except for capriati and davenport... she has always been anti-williams and she has been anti-russian since the beginning of the russian revoloution... she knocks dementieva's serve, but in reality it has been a decently reliable shot in her last 2 matches, against the numbers 3 and 4 in the WORLD...

she needs to start gtiving my girl some frickin credit, and realize that she has more than a chance to take this the way she is playing... dementieva beat a solid top 20 clay courter and two top five players in her last matches, and who did suarez beat... sharapova?, please... masha has always looked awkward on court, and watching some of that match, it is evident how bad maria's movement really is... suarez was hitting decently pace and spinned balls, very retrievable, and masha did not even try... not to mention she couldnt find the court and went for wayyy too much after the second shot of a rally... paola's not gunna find that in elena tomorrow... granted, paola is an excellent clay court player and is possibly in the top ten of the world after roland garros this year... she may deserve it due to the pure fact she is consistant... but dementieva is having one of her great great playing periods (a la miami 04, shanghai and bali 03), and i truly believe that her expierence, focus, determination, and gameplay will overpower suarez tomorrow

as for capriati/nastya.. i truly believe nastya has a CHANCE, but i think that the way that capriati is playing, it would be a real upset if she lost to nastya... shes playing her best clay court tennis in years and the russian #1 is all-so talented, but nerves and attitude on court might ultimatley be her demise... she will try to play defensive and wait for jen to make the error like she did against venus, and if capirati is hitting well, i dont think she should have any trouble knocking off the 6th seed

my picks:

Dementieva def. Suarez in straight sets, maybe in three sets if she gets nervous during times like serving for the set, match...etc

Capriati def. Myskina in straight sets, though i would like to see an all-russian final

MAURO

I guess that seals it that it will be an all-Russian final.
i hope not

but Pam predictions in QF was dangerous

LeonHart
Jun 3rd, 2004, 04:01 AM
In a way, I want Capriati to win again, since it has been so long since she has won a slam. And do we knoe she wants it soooo sooo much. It'll be devastating to see her lose when she's the favorite to win going into the semis. Then again, this is the best Russian tennis grandslam we've seen. 2 Russinas in a grandslam Semi!!! It be greater to have 2 in the finals both fighting it out to win their 1st grandslam! It would surely be an exciting match.

the thing about pam's predictions is that she should be right on at least one of her predictions (she cannot get 6 straight matches wrong...can she?) Even if you threw a coin you would be right at least once out of 6...is Pam's analysis worse than the flip of a coin?

Pam you must really begin to think these things through. Write down your ideas and come to a conclusion. You should then toss a coin which wil get it right half of the time or say that the people your analysis proved will win wil lose which should get nearly 100% of calls right.

Be fair, I once predicted CORRECTLY that a point would be won by someone at wimbledon back in 98.

Pam you must really begin to think these things through. Write down your ideas and come to a conclusion. You should then toss a coin which wil get it right half of the time or say that the people your analysis proved will win wil lose which should get nearly 100% of calls right.
Nah, that would make almost sense in PamWorld.
