View Full Version : New Game - The Weakest Link

Hey all :)

I am going to set up a new game and these are the rules (they sound more complicated than they are). Please sign up via PM, this thread or the forum which I will hopefully get soon :)

The set-up:

You probably think that tennis is all about winning matches, making money and being the best player in the world? And hard work and natural talent are the ingredients for success? Well, of course you are right. But there is more to it. The Tour is hard, cruel and extremely tough. In order to survive, alliances, friendships and pacts are inevitable. Players will break down mentally, if the atmosphere is hostile. If you are not on speaking terms with most of the players, some of them might play dirty tricks on you.

That’s about the scenario of the Tour. Not all that glitters is gold; life in the tennis jet set is rough. And that is the essential difference between this game and the other games already around. If you don’t find allies who will stick up for you, winning will be hard. And if you have a lot of enemies around, losing matches is more likely. If you are socially vulnerable, this will make you the Weakest Link.

This is how it works:

You have to divide 800 points in 8 different categories. The categories are:

1. Service
2. Volley
3. Topspin shots
4. Slice shots
5. Groundstrokes
6. Lobs & Drop shots
7. Physical endurance
8. Game tactics

But.. (And you knew there would be a but ;)) there are four extra categories:

9. Mental support and social intelligence
10. Mental support and social intelligence
11. Hostilities on Tour
12. Hostilities on Tour

Indeed, category 9 & 10 and 11 & 12 are the same categories. You cannot send in points for these categories. The score for these categories is decided by the allies you have and the alliances you made, but also by the enemies you have and what other hostilities you run into on the Tour. Every player on Tour will have to be an ally or close friend of three other players. You must also pick three players who will be your enemies or rivals.

The points distribution for the categories 9, 10, 11 and 12 depends on the ranking of a player. E.g., if Magdalena Maleeva is ranked #3 and she has Virginie Pichet, Marta Domachowska and Francesca Schiavone as her enemies on Tour, those three players will all receive –70 points in category 11 and 12 (Hostilities on Tour). But, Maleeva’s allies (Kuznetsova, Svensson and Pratt) all receive 70 points in category 9 and 10 (Mental support and social intelligence). This is the entire system:

Player’s ranking: …Points handed to allies / enemies

#1…………………….200 / -200
#2…………………….170 / -170
#3…………………….140 / -140
#4…………………….110 / -110
#5…………………….100 / -100
#6…………………….90 / -90
#7…………………….80 / -80
#8…………………….70 / -70
#9…………………….60 / -60
#10…………………...50 / -50
#11-15………………..40 / -40
#16-20………………..30 / -30
#20-25………………..20 / -20
#25-30………………..10 / -10
#30-50………………..5 / -5
#50 >..………………..1 / -1

How matches are played:

My calculator (Texas Instruments TI-83) randomly selects one of the fourteen categories. The player who has the highest number of points in that category wins the game. If both players have the same amount of points, a coin toss will decide the winner of the game. In the tie-break, every category picked will be one point. In the categories “Hostilities on Tour” the game will go to the person with the highest, thus least negative, number of points.

How to hand out more “Hostilities on Tour” points:

As I already explained, the number of positive and negative points you hand out to your opponents depends on your ranking. But there is a way that lets you hand out extra points too:

- The winner of a tournament will have the opportunity to hand out 100 points to ANY enemy.
- Every two weeks, there will be a quiz with questions based mainly on women’s tennis (though, some men’s tennis will be involved too) and the personalities on Tour. The quizzes will consist of ten questions. Every question answered correctly earns you 20 points that you can give to ANY enemy. The player who answers most of the questions correctly will receive a very special bonus: the points this player has in the “Hostilities on Tour” category will be automatically reset to 0. For the tenth question, you will have to make an estimate. The question could be something like: how many linesmen worked at Wimbledon in 2003? The person who is closest to that answer, wins the point.

This points system will give new and lower-ranked players on Tour the chance to fight back. The earned extra points can be handed out to any player on the Tour, but need to be handed to one player only. This therefore means it is not possible to divide 100 points over 10 players.

How to start playing:

- You can pick any currently active player still available. Only one player per person.
- Sign up by sending me a PM or sign up in the special sign-up thread.
- Send me your points for the eight categories AND your list of three allies and three enemies.
- Make sure your player commits to certain tournaments. You can do this in the special commitment thread, where you will also find the tournament calendar.
- If you have any questions, just PM me! :) I can also be contacted via e-mail or MSN: martijn_mos@hotmail.com

Important notes and comments:

- You can change your points before every match. However, sending in points time after time isn’t mandatory.
- Tournaments will consist of singles and doubles matches. The system for doubles matches is the same as singles matches, only the scores for the partners will be added up.
- In the first week, the matches will be played without the use of allies and enemies. Only once the first rankings are up, the Mental Support and Social Intelligence and Hostilities on Tour categories will be used.
- As this game will take quite some time to run, I am looking for someone who wants to help me out with running the game!

Remember.. The most important thing is to have fun! The game may seem a bit complicated at first, but it really isn’t.
