... is it possible to give Elena a lil more respect for winning that match. Lindsay was injured no doubt about it, but Elena's play in quarters proved that Lindsay's injury wsn't the only reason for her loss.

I agree. The slower conditions of the court favored Elena in that match the way they favored Suarez over Sharapova today.

Oh, come on.. Was it slower conditions that made Sharapova lose last 15!!! points of the match in a row? Only nine short of a golden set.. She was just a brainless wacker with no willpower today on court.. She was unprepared for the match of that magnitude, whatever ther reason for that was - hype or all this trashtalk about her having a shot at title. She was not making an effort, she was not willing to fight. No conditions can excuse that..

No. becasue she down 0-1 in the final set of her match with Anna when Anna had to retire, so we will never know waht would have happened had the match been brought to completion.

You mean, what would happen after paramedics would have done their job?

She made a valid point. Elena was playing like chicken shit until the 4th round.

K. Here is the comment about the topic:

Congrats Elena. She was playing very well during her 4th round match. But I must say that Lindsay was playing one of the worst matches I've seen her play in a while. The injuries keep on coming...

This sums it up. Elena played well, Lindsay played shitty, put two and two together = easy win for Elena. Yay.

What's being stupid in pointing out that she is fortunate to be in the semifinals due to the fact that her opponent in the third round, who was leading in the final set of their match, had to retire apparently up a break of serve. Had that match been brought to conclusion, we might have had a differnt semifinalist.

Apparently, you were't aware that she was in that situation.

Yes, Elena got lucky against Smashanova, but she still had to win two more matches to make it to the semifinals. She played well against Davenport and brilliantly against Mauresmo. So I think Elena deserves the praise she is getting today. Anything could have happened in the Smashanova match, but the reality is that Anna SP retired and Dementieva moved onto the the next round. There is no point going into the woulda, coulda scenario.

Elena didn't "get lucky" against Smashnova. She played her to exhaustion. Smashnova had to run so much to keep up with Elena's big groundies that her body eventually rebelled.

at the end of the day (or the two weeks, for that matter) each player has a job to do--win a match. Whoever wins the final did her job better than anyone else. We can say "she got lucky b/c so and so lost" or "she would never have beaten so and so" but the fact is the one left standing is the one who did her job, so she deserves to win. Lindsay is my favorite, but she didn't do her job. Elena DID do her job, and that's why she's still in the tournament. That's all that matters.

Looking at the most recent news about Lindsay, her loss can be directly contributed to her knee.

The 2nd set loss can be attributed to her knee. Lindsay is a very gracious player, but is also honest. If SHE said she lost the first set 6-1 because of Elena and not her knee, I'd tend to believe her instead.

Elena also had double BP against Anna, when Anna retired. If any of yoy saw the match, Elena picked it up a notch towards the end of the 2nd set, which is why she won 6 straight points in the TB.

Udachi Elena, keep fighting! :)
