Nastya def. Venus too. I was cheering Amélie all the way, but I knew Dementieva would be hard to beat if she did not under-play

Myskina defeating Venus, simply because Venus was undefeated on clay this year and because this is Nastya's worst surface by far.

I would have to say all of them - I came back from my last exam after celebrating and couldn't believe the results that I saw:

Suarez beating Sharapova so easily surprised me.

Anastasia - a great player - but beating Venus on clay in straights I could not believe.

Jenny C over Serena came as surprise - even though Jenny beat Serena last time in Rome. I thought Serena would take charge given the GS status.

But Elena D beating Mauresmo - I am in shock

Dementieva over Mauresmo! I knew Jenny had a real shot. Sharapova was too nervous going into the quarterfinal to be any real threat. Myskina had a shot if Venus was not playing well, but I never could have predicted that Dementieva would play so brilliantly! This is the best win of her career by far. If she can dictate play and hold her nerves together, I really think she can make the final.

Myskina def vee was the biggest shock. It was like where did that come from?
Suarez's nature of her victory of Maria shocked me.
Elena's win was a bit of a shock but i did realistically give Elena a good chance after the way she demolished lindsay.
Jen and Serena well its always the same with them 2 (and i love it!!) but i would have slightly favoured Rena just based on the last 2 GS encounters.

Henman is the only player I really LOATHE! Male or female ... I felt reeeeaaaally bad when Llodra squandered all his leads in the 5th set. And now he beats Chela  ... I hope Guille beats him 6-0 6-0 6-0 :fiery: Henman's boring, predictable, as stiff as a pole and ... urg ... boring :p Let's just hope that he turned into a mediocre clay courter and loses 1st round Wimbledon so the BBC will talk about somebody else ...

AND BTW ... I think Elena beating Amelie was most surprising ... Venus losing is just sad for me, but I thought that Nastya had a little more chance of pulling an upset than Elena ... Plus Amelie was soooo strong these last weeks, Venus too but she hasn't beaten someone of a big significance on clay this year.

Henman hasnt beaten Federer, or Moya, or Nalbandian or Hewitt, or Safin or Agassi or Ferrero Or ANYONE ranked above him. He has done what is expected of him being a seed not having had to play another seed.
If he beats Coria fair play I will respect him but is that likely...we'll see.

Lena d. Amelie - no disrespect to Elena, but in my fan's heart I really though Amelie was going to pull it off this year.

After the initial eyeball-pop, I'm less surprised about Venus and Serena losing because of how much and for how long they've been injured. Neither's really had a chance to get back to full-speed, and in Serena's case she was up against someone who seems to be peaking.

Well Henman has beaten all those players before apart from Hewit. The best players at a tournament will progress to further rounds, its obvious Agassi wasnt the best player, neither was moya. We will see how henman does against coria, who he has beaten on clay before. The better player will win :p ;)

Yeah Agassi, Moya and ferrero all previous winners, all have lost before the semi's but Henman has had nothing to do with that. He's been beating guys just ranked inside the top hundred.

My point is that he has taken advantage of an easy draw... and kudos to him. you can only beat whats in front of you, but like i said if he beats Coria then and only then does he deserve any real credit.

Henman has beaten moya 4 times and lost 5 times, so it would be pretty much 50-50, if yu look at henmans head-to-heads he is even with everyone but Hewitt, but as always ppl will underestimate him and think he will lose, i hope he proves yu wrong :p .

suarez d. sharapova for 4 main reasons
1. i hate the williams (no offense to anyone else or them, they just win too much)
2. i wanted momo out, i want a surpirise winner

oh griff, realism, realism, Amélie always caves at RG. It's where she's had her worst results in all the slams. You're blinded dear, just blinded, you had to have known this was coming.

I thought Anastasia beating Venus was the most surprising. I felt Venus had been playing really well and didn't think Anastasia would be the one to beat her. She really kept her cool and pulled off the win. I thought the Serena/Jen match could go either way and with Jen having just beat her I knew it was possible this might happen again. Paola/Maria wasn't a surprise either due to Maria's lack of experience and Paola's superb clay court play.

*leaves thread to go put something special in the mail for griff to cheer her up*

By order of schockness:

Amelie
Venus
Sharapova
Serena

I can't get over Amelie's loss, she was just too good up till this moment.

Celeste
Jun 2nd, 2004, 12:53 AM
I was pretty shocked at Amelie's defeat. She's been playing so great and had a tailor-made draw, and even got out of playing Lindsay. I was hoping against hope that she'd put her choking ways behind her with maybe counseling and some recent confidence she's talked about, or at least she could still win with choking ways against lesser players like Dementieva and Suarez (sorry, they are lesser players to her) and her choking ways would not rear their head until the final. Too bad. I really thought this would be her time, no injuries or anything, I'm really sad for her.

I thought Venus wasn't playing all that great and really coasting some (many have won Majors doing this, though), but I didn't think it would be Myskina who nailed her. I wasn't shocked about Jennifer/Serena or Maria/Suarez. Did anyone notice on the yahoo slideshow, Maria Sharapova was identifed as "Anna Sharapova?"
