let's calculate: the tv ratings for that would be exactly......ZERO!!! Paola should never get to a slam semi-final, let alone a final. No, it will be Dementieva vs. Capriati, which still shouldn't happen. Cappy vs. Sharapova or Mauresmo would have made for interesting tv, though the best would have been Serena vs. JHH.

Well that doesn't change the fact that the players deserve to be there. Tv is business, Tennis is sport.

Elena hit 18 DFs in the first round and she is still leading in the all round DFs leaderboard...well, should we continue to bash her simply because she is able to reach SF of a Grand Slam by beating Davenport and Mauresmo?

Geoffry

I think it's great and it shows the 'dominance' the Russian players have lately, if Elena plays like her last two matches, she'll be a major threat to Paola and maybe to Jennifer -who I think will win against Anastasia, but you never know, looking at the draw

I just hope Elena can win the next round, she will have to focus on herself and not let it get to her, which is why it is good Olga is there.

And the serve wasn't so bad! ;)

Finally! All that talk about the Russians but no real results on the major stages until today. All of them could make it early in the second week, but no further than that.

Now the two "elder statesmen" (as Mary Carillo would say ;)) of the Russian clan are through to the semis. This is especially satisfying for me considering how easily they were written off last year by American commentators because of their serves. Everyone was talking about Zvonareva, Petrova, and Sharapova, who have all embarassingly let a a huge opportunity slip away to make it through the top quarter to the semis. Maybe Elena's and Nastya's serves do suck, but that's true for most of the top women anyway, and boy do they make up for their poor serves with some awesome baseline tennis.

Olga has really helped her game tremendously. What a smart decision for Dementieva to bring her on the team and it sure has paid off. I'd love so much to see her in the finals, and possibly even win! :)

Even if Jennifer gets to the final, like I think she will, the ratings will be just as bad as the ratings for the finals were for the women last year. In fact, I think the Belmont Stakes wll get better ratings than the FO ladies' final.

Hey, its no ones foult that the Americans weren't capable of getting to this stage of the tournament. It's also no ones foult but the Americans' that ESPN will now have low ratings on RG. And I don't give a f@ck on that.
What I do care about is the tennis that is being played, that I want to watch and other people want to watch, not the TV ratings.

NBC doesn't care what you think, but they care about what thier advertisers think and their advertisers aren't going to buy airtime if marquee players aren't there and in the US, marquee players are:

The Williams sisters
Andre Aggasi
Andy Roddick
Anna Kournikova

It about MONEY too as well as tennis.

If I were you, I'd just be happy that two Russians are in the semifinals for the first time in the Open Era becasue you may not see that for awhile.

Why should I watch it if my favorites are not in it? I didn't last year and the ratings were laughable:lol: and unfortunately they will be this year:lol: .

There will be coverage in the US next year regardless. If you knew anything about the business in the US and you don't, you'd know that there is going to coverage on out national TV stations, whether it is ABC, NBC or CBS, unless covering it costs too much money and then they would dump it to cable, which is what ESPN and EPSN2 is.

yes, 2 in top 100, about 10 players with any sort of ranking

tennis in Croatia has been going on for alot longer. its a NEW sport in Russia.

Obviously people get older and retire.

Plus we have other sports that kids can get into.

The facts are, our players have been more sucessful at the big events and your country hasn't. I am not saying that it can't happen, but you must admit, it is a little strange that Belgium has about 10 million people in their country and produced two number one players and a three time Grand Slam winner before Russia had, new sport or not, since Justine and Kim are around the same ages as Elena, Nadia and Anastasia.

Of course it is true. Sports like NBA are designed to be watched and enjoyed by proles who are ... majority.. :) Tennis is a noble game which suggests that only a small minority of people will ever find it interesting. Tennis is not designed to be the most popular game and Thanks God for that..

Actually, that's not always true.

The NBA feared that basketball would suffer a ratings decline when Michael Jordan retired, but now with players like Shaq, Kobe, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, people have not lost interest or have renewed interest.

Cat- i can not believe Elena beat Amelie- did you see the match- i told ya'll that serve was a weapon- so was it on or not? I think she will beat paola- Nastya, ove of my girl's might have more of a problem beating cappy:)

She actually served pretty strongly - it wasn't a liability at all  And as for those groundstrokes... fucking devastating, every one hit like a bullet. The way she launched herself at some of those balls, smacking them away from everywhere on court - wonderful.

I'm ecstatic... but also nervous, because I really really really want Nastya to beat JenFat.

Haha no prizes for guessing to whom Melly Flew Us is referring.

Maybe my dream of an all-Russian final is about to come true after all (cf. post a couple of days ago). But if it comes to that I won't know who to root for. My, I love them both equally. Actually despite the enormous shock I felt when Justine lost, I think it may be nice if a new regular pattern comes into the WTA. I mean all Williams finals, all-Belgian finals or all-Russian finals, that would pep things up, wouldn'it? I would also love a mix-up of all previous possibilities in GS events (no, I'm not changing my mind, I still like Justine best). But Elena and Nastia have long been my other favourites (together with Dokic, who's unfortunately going through a crappy period). Yes, I'd be elated if one of the two Russian girls ended up with the trophy
