Already through to the quarters! Great work Vika! She should beat Garbin, but Garbin can be tricky and the kind of player that would really bother Vika if she keeps running down balls. On the other hand, Vika should be able to totally overwhelm her and take a spot in the semis with relative ease!

On The Move: Victoria Azarenka
By Scott Riley, Tennis Editor

POSTED: 12:36 pm EST December 20, 2007

Philadelphia, PA -- (Sports Network) - Last week we talked about Hungarian hammer Agnes Szavay. This week we're going to discuss another very promising teen on the WTA Tour -- Belarus' Victoria Azarenka.

The 18-year-old Azarenka was just one of several upcoming stars that caught the attention of the tennis world at the 2007 U.S. Open. She rolled all the way into the fourth round before giving in to former champion and eventual runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Among the rising Belarusian's three victories in the Big Apple was a big three-set, come-from-behind one against former world No. 1 stalwart Martina Hingis in the third round.

Azarenka, who was born in Minsk, resides in Arizona and trains in Spain, reached at least the third round in three of the four majors this year, with Roland Garros (1st round) marking her only early exit at an '07 Slam. As a matter of fact, dating back to last year's U.S. Open, the talented teen has reached at least the third round in four of her last five majors.

As a 16-year-old, the impressive Azarenka became the junior world champion in 2005, capturing the Aussie and U.S. Open titles that year, not to mention three quarters of the junior Grand Slam doubles championships. She became the first-ever Belarusian player to win the junior world crown, going a combined 50-3 in singles and doubles in '05.

The 5-foot-10 Azarenka officially joined the professional ranks back in 2003 and is still looking for her first WTA singles title. She does own a doubles championship on the circuit and was a mixed doubles winner at the 2007 U.S. Open, where she paired with doubles specialist, and fellow Belarusian, Max Mirnyi to claim the title. Azarenka and Mirnyi posted a runner-up mixed finish at this year's Aussie Open.

Azarenka was a two-time singles finalist in '07, finishing as the runner-up to German Greta Arn on red clay in Estoril in her first-ever WTA final and France's Pauline Parmentier on a hardcourt finale in Tashkent. Her biggest wins of the season came against the since-retired Hingis in New York, Russian superstar Maria Sharapova in Moscow, Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli at the Australian Open, and former top-10 Russian star Nadia Petrova in Luxembourg. In addition to the pair of finals, Azarenka reached a semifinal in Prague and landed in quarterfinals in Los Angeles, Luxembourg and Moscow.

The 132-pound Azarenka, whose favorite shot is a robust two-handed backhand, went 34-18 for the year, one in which she opened at 96th in the world and wound up in the top 30 (currently 30th). She climbed as high as No. 26 early last month.

Azarenka's '07 prize money eclipsed $470,000 and her career earnings are just under the $640,000 mark, thanks to a 97-50 lifetime record.

Will Vicki (or do you prefer Vicky) break through with her first career singles title in 2008?

I'm almost certain of it.

I've never heard her referred to as Vicki or Vicky - probably just some poor use of "artistic license" on the part of the author. Vika is continuing her dominating results against another of my favs, Dominika Cibulkova and leads 5-1 at the moment. I fully expect Vika to win this match without much trouble and then we'll get to see an exciting showdown vs. Peer! Great chance for Vika to make a Tier 3 final and possibly win the whole thing!

I agree big things are likely in '08. Who knows just how far she will go this year.
This tight 3 setter at the moment is going to be a good indication as to whether she can hold those troublesome nerves and advance. There's no doubt she's got the talent to do extremely well this year. The mental side of her game will hold the key

(5) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) vs. Olga Govortsova (RUS)
Gisela Dulko (ARG) vs. Alberta Brianti (ITA)

Vika lost in 3 tight sets :(
As Derek mentioned before she injured her thigh in the first set which really impared her movement. Also in the second set Vika got 2 very hard to swallow stinking umpire decisions against her, on an Ace and on a ball Li hit long.

Hope the injury isn't too bad.

Vika will never win a final. Never.

She obviousy will. :o

Anyway, her serve let her down i thought. She served well up until the last game of the 1st set. After that she could barely get any decent 1st serves in. Maybe it was due to the injury, although she does lose timing on it sometimes. She really could have had this in 2. Vika basically plays Li's game with more consistency and has better movement. She got robbed on a call at the end of the 2nd set too which didn't help matters.

She will put this behind her and move on though. ;)

Whilst its frustrating that she lost, I think we've still got to put it into perspective. Reaching the final of her first event of the year is a great start to the season. Her victory over Peer is a huge confidence booster too.
Unfortunately she got injured yesterday at a really bad time, which was a big hinderance on her game and I believe that was the major reason she lost yesterday. Full credit to Vika for fighting it out right to the end, very very nearly got the job done.

I wouldn't get too beat up over this result as I believe Vika will be winning many titles in the not too distant future. She'll also have a new high ranking of 25 on Monday :D

Vika :o
Although with such a packed schedule coming up over the next 2 months it might not be the worst thing to get a bit of rest in and just focus on practice.

Guys, I saw the end of the match and Vika is injured! She hurt her knee badly on the last serve. I saw her after and she had walking sticks. Does not look good at all, sorry for the bad news...
