I recorded Vika's post match interview from Eurosport, if some of you want, I can upload it so you guys can use it for .. the things you do with it  But I'm not sure if I can

I think the French people are taking over Doha. :o

Vika, you are simply A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. :inlove: Great start! :D

If Piotr Wozniacki is telling the truth then Caro might pull out at the last minute and Vika would play Vera instead.

Nina.

Sorry, but I only believe this when Caro isn't showing up on the court. According to Caro's father she had so many season threatening injuries this year
And Vika said in an interview that she and Caro were at dinner together and they talked and joked about playing each other. So I'm pretty sure Caro will play.

Well this was definitely one that got away

She was in such control after the first set i think she got a little complacent and thought Caro's 'injury' would lead to her making errors and handing her the 2nd set without much effort. Caro coming off her deathbed is always a dangerous opponent. It's going to be a very nervy last match with Safina now to get to the semi's :scared: but at least she gets an extra days rest. If she plays with as much controlled aggression as she played in the first set she could get all the way to the final. I'm going to have a heart attack soon if she keeps losing matches like these for much longer i think :(

Vika dominated the first set playing brilliantly and aggressive and outclassed caro. From the start of the second set she started playing the passive crap we've seen a lot lately and allowed Caro back into it. She did lead for most of the set and had 2 bp's at 15-40 to go 5-3 up but proceeded to lose the next 3 games and the set. In the third Vika was more aggressive but also very careless whenever she was up a break and kept handing breaks back to Caro after 30-0 up in a lot of games. She had MP at 5-3 too and then got broken serving for the match  At 5-5 and 15-40 down she forfeited the game by first hitting a ball out the stadium in frustration then racket abuse which gave caro a penalty point. Caro then served it out :sobbing:

I'm afraid to say Caro deserved the win becuase Vika was awful in the the 2nd set and as a front runner in the third. It was as if the first set was a little too easy for her and she relaxed a little.

She squealed a few times :hearts: but nothing really feels cute after the manner of the loss.Up until the point penalty she got she actually kept a lid on her emotions well and what happened to her would have tipped anyone over the top i think. It was strange how all the bite went out of her serve and groundstrokes after the first set and only briefly returned in the 3rd.

She was only really pushing in the 2nd set i think. She finished the match with 47 winners and only 43 UE so she didn't play a horrible match, but it was the way she relaxed which was the most annoying thing. Caro couldn't compete with her whenever she stepped it up in the first set. Her length and pace on her forehand were awful for the last 2 sets which was allowing Caro to win points she shouldn't have.

It was horrible :( i think its the way Vika was ahead basically the whole match until she threw it away at the end of 2nd and 3rd sets and wasted a MP. If someone had handed her the win on a plate she probably would have dropped it. She really needs to learn to close out matches better because she's lost a lot of close ones since Wimby. Making the serve more of a weapon would be a good start

Now Vika is up against Bepa on Friday. Tough one, but a win is needed.

Caro did play well. When was the last time she beat someone who had a positive W/UE ratio like Vika did today? it'd be nice if she could start being more aggressive like that more often and i'm sure she'd win more fans. Saying that though Vika gave her plenty of help by sending a lot of puff balls into the middle of the court off her forehand :(

okay, I've been going through some scenarios for the YEC:

Worst case is if Vika loses to Bepa, let's assume that. Then there's 2 more matches in the group: Caro vs JJ and Caro vs Bepa. 4 different outcomes:

1. Caro beats JJ but not Bepa: Caro and Bepa will advance
2. Caro beats Bepa but not JJ: Caro and JJ will advance
3. Caro loses both matches: Bepa and JJ will advance
4. Caro wins both matches:

Name: Wins Loses
Caro: 3 0
JJ : 1 2
Vika: 1 2
Bepa: 1 1

what will decide who will advance with Caro?

Nina.
Oct 28th, 2009, 07:38 PM
I think you look at the set win-lost ratio.

Christinawww
Oct 28th, 2009, 07:43 PM
Pagee 162 of the rule book:
The final standings of each group shall be determined by the first of the following methods that apply:
i. Greatest number of wins;
ii. Greatest number of matches played; or
iii. Head-to-head results if only two (2) players are tied, or if three
(3) players are tied then:
(a) If three (3) players each have one (1) win, a player having
played less than all three (3) matches is automatically
eliminated and the player advancing to the single elimination
competition is the winner of the match-up of the two
(2) players tied with 1-2 records; or
(b) Highest percentage of sets won; or
(c) Highest percentage of games won.

Only case 4 is interesting as it is Vika's only chance to go to SF (if she loses to Bepa that is)
Bepa is eliminated as she has played only 2 matches, and as Vika defeated JJ, she will go on :)

are you sure?
Assume Vika beats Bepa. Vika is then 2-1
Two matches in the group remain: Caro vs JJ, and Caro vs Bepa
Again 4 cases:

Caro wins both matches: Caro and Vika are through
Caro loses both matches: Vika and JJ are through
Caro beats jj, but loses to Bepa: Caro and Vika are through
Caro beats Bepa, but loses to JJ: Caro, Vika and JJ are all 2-1 then. Caro beat Vika who beat JJ who beat Caro... will we then look at sets?

The last option is too confusing for me to even think about all the possibilities right now so let's just say it would have taken a miracle of epic proportions for Vika not to qualify if she'd won today  If she finishes level with Caro and JJ wouldn;t she go through because of beating JJ in straights and losing to Caro in 3?

There's a couple of points from the 3rd set burned on my brain but I think the US Open loss was worse. Anyway, onwards and upwards for Vika - day off today, then back to winning ways against Vera. It's good that it sounds like she was in an okay mood after the match, enough to chat with Caro anyway

Oct 29th, 2009, 01:40 PM
The Schiavone loss was bad but for me this felt a lot worse mainly because of how close she was to winning and getting to the SF's  She was ahead the whole match until the last 2 games and wasted so many opportunities to finish Caro off and if she'd just held serve once after she'd broken in the 3rd set she'd have probably won. I lost count of the amount of times she blew a 30-0 lead on her serve too to be broken :banghead: All the power seemed to disappear from her first serve and ground strokes after the first set too and it wasn't until Antonio came on near the end of the 2nd set that she started being aggressive again.

Against Vera she needs to try and be aggressive the whole match like she was in the first set because playing like that she's capable of beating anybody. IF Caro wins all 3 matches Vika's through without having to beat Vera, but i think the only way Vika can top the group now is if Caro loses her next 2 matches and Vika beats Vera.

JJ needs to beat Caro and Vika needs to beat Aga and she will top the group. The scores don't matter as long as those 2 win.

Hello fans of Vika :wavey:

I hope Vika wins from Aga because it should be unfair if Jankovic goes to the SF after that gift vs Dinara (she did play only 2 games) and maybe a second gift vs a tired (and injured?) Wozniacki :( The only match she was faced to a fit player would be vs Vika and she lost in 2 sets so Vika deserves a place in the semis no matter of the result of her match vs Radwanska! I think Vika should better have played Vera because Vera isn't motivated at all (and also injured at her ankle and her knees).

Go Vika. Please make it to the semis :worship:

I'm also gutted she couldn't close it out in the second set but not really upset with her either because she's had a great year overall and has given us some great performances. Hope she heals quick and is able to get in plenty of training before the start of next season because she has a few things that really need working on such as her serve, fitness, forehand and mentality at closing out matches.

Well done to her anyway for the year she's had :yeah:

^sorry.

and yes allrounder. It was a good season overall. 3 titles, 2 slam QFs, top6 debut, qualifying for YEC, many highlights, but she was just so close at ending the year on a high note.
Hopefully, they'll work on her mental strength in the off-season. If she can get stronger mentality and more mature mentally, the results will be better. Her serve disappeared, not because of technique, but because of her mentality. Sure, she can improve the serve to get more free points, but today the serve worked well in the beginning and then she started just putting it in. Had she kept the serving from the first set all the way, she would have won.

Of course, it's a normal thing as an athlete. And as an athlete in a singles sport you have to think about yourself in the first place.

But it's just double-annoying that Vika couldn't have won her match in 2 sets. She really needs to learn closing these matches out.
And please, Vika & Antonio, do something about the serve! The serving against Woz was one of the most painful I've seen in a while. She just couldn't hold. That needs to improve.

Christinawww
Nov 1st, 2009, 05:29 AM
It is Vika's own fault that Caro was in the SF and not Vika herself. Vika was given handfuls of chances but didn't take any of them.

And Vika and Antonio know that the serve needs improvement. In some interview from earlier this year, Vika said something about them working on it. But if this is the way she has been serving since she started playing tennis and it worked all the way through juniors, it takes a long time to change it.

The Exhibition Vika's playing in Kiev tomorrow also includes Anna Kournikova, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Caroline Wozniacki, Tommy Robredo, David Ferrer and Andrei Medvedev and is to raise money for cancer research apparently. She's going to have some serious jetlag issues i think going from Florida to Kiev and playing the very next day :scared: good job it's only an exhibition i guess.

Caro is playing mixed doubles with Robredo, Ferrer and Kournikova so I guess Vika will play mixed with Medvedev and Kafelnikov and someone else. it's a long way to go for a mixed doubles match.

Seems like Vika was a bit cold in London this morning

Isn't Medvedev the president of Russia? and why doesn't Vika get Kournikova? :sobbing:  now that would be a hot team :inlove:

She's not given herself much time to get there and get ready has she? The flight's about 3 hours and i think they're 2 hours ahead of us here too :help: She's probably going back home to Belarus for a few days for Christmas anyway, that's probably why she made the long trip.

Do you get sick if you go in there?

Someone posted this, I guess it's from the email Caro sends to her mailing list:

Tomorrow I will travel to Kiev, Ukraine where I will play show match (mixed double) together with, Robredo, Ferrer and Kournikova. It's always nice to be involved in such events because the money from the event will go to charity, so it's always something I'd like to support. Additionally, I will be visiting a clinic where I will play a bit with some young children and write autographs.

Aleh posted on the wta.ru forums that Vika was playing with Robredo against Anna K/Ferrer and i assumed he may have known more about it from being in Belarus, but obviously not if that's what Caro has said  I hope Vika is actually playing and hasn't just gone over there to watch Caro and do some promotional stuff. Hopefully there'l at least be some pictures from it anyway.
