Azarenka Shows Her Class
2 January 2006

In a classic battle of youth versus experience, 16-year-old Victoria Azarenka defeated 33-year-old Amy Frazier 6-2 5-7 6-4 in first round action on Monday.

Frazier was the top seed in Auckland last year and tried to use all of her considerable guile to topple the world's No1 junior. But Azarenka broke the former world No13 at 4-4 in the third set and then held her nerve to advance to the second round.

The 2005 Australian and US Open junior champion was grateful for receiving a wildcard from tournament director Richard Palmer. "It's very good that I didn't have to play qualifying so I wouldn't be tired," said Azarenka.

Azarenka was quick out of the blocks but knew that maintaining a high level of play throughout the whole match was the key to beating a player of Frazier's quality.

"I started very good and I think Amy didn't play that good at the beginning as she [couldn't find] her rhythm," she said.

"You have to be at 100% all the time to beat her because you never know what's going to come ... she can change her game by playing hard and deep. It's very tough."

The 1.80 teenager from Belarus showed off her impressive array of tools to the curious crowd out on court 4. She hits hard and deep from both wings and has the advantage of being able to win cheap points off her powerful serve.

Vika actually has a fairly decent draw here! I like her chances vs Maria K, and then possibly Vera Z. Both of these are potential upset victims for Vika. And then possibly Dani H or Katarina Srebotnik in the semis? This could be a finals appearance for Vika!!! Keep going and good luck tomorrow!!!
Does anyone have any match videos of Vika that they could share? I am still waiting for a chance to see her play.

Derek.

I think Vika has a good chance against Maria K, but if Vika plays Daniela I don't think she'll win, but I'm biased since Daniela is my favorite. :p

Well she just played Auckland. Besides that I really don't know.

Her ranking might not be enough to give her direct entry into WTA tournaments as of yet, she got a WC for Auckland. It's possible she's playing qualies somewhere.

hey everyone, i've watched Azarenka's last 2 quallifying matches, and gotta say, it's brilliant watching her play - the girl's got talent! and she is a VERY nice girl off the court aswell.

Hopefully she has a good match against Mirza, and that her leg injury wont hurt her chances too much.

will post some pics when i get back to christchurch on the 30th.

hey all, Victoria had a gut wrenching loss today (recieved a nasty line call at set point in the tie break, which ultimately cost her the match. nevermind, i'm pleased with the way she's fought her way through the quallies, and very nearly past mirza - whilst injured! looks like a very promising future.

btw, anyone know if she's entering the Girls Singles this time around?

Vika
she hopefully wont need to qualify for Roland Garros or Wimbledon.
got about 35pts to defend before RG entries made.

btw, anyone know if she's entering the Girls Singles this time around?

Vika has finished with juniors, she's sticking to WTA and some ITFs.
she was World Champ last yr and only played 6 tourns.
she doesnt need juniors and would be wasting her time now.

okay, thanks for the info.

Yip, i was at the match - had a bloody good seat too (will post some pics when i get home next week sometime).
As i said earlier, this leg injury she had made her chase down fewer balls than she normally would, hense i feel she would've comprehensively beaten Mirza had she been fully fit.

of concern though, is her ability to hold serve on the important points, like in the qualifying and in the tie break against mirza, she had her chances, but let herself down with way too many DF's and UE's. However with a bit more fine tuning on her serve - she will be a force on the tour very quickly.

do you have a list of the tournaments Vika has entered for the next few months?

Hopefully she comes back to Auckland next year so i can go up and cheer her on!

Gowza
Jan 19th, 2006, 08:25 AM
her serve didn't help her at all against mirza, she hits the ball well but doesn't use enough strategy imo, doesn't think out her points and tries to hit through players too much. but that could have only been in this match? first match i've seen of her. looks like she should be top 50 now imo, she has the power just needs to work a bit on the strategy and serve. didn't see her volley so maybe in the future that could be something she could work towards.

I was at the game too, and she made far too many errors. She was down a break late in the set; got it back and it went to a tiebreak. She was down 4-1, but stormed back and had two serves at 5-4. She then faulted and was down set point. She then received probably the worst line call I have ever seen. It was clearly in, there is no doubt that ball was in. However it went against her and the game was virtually over.

I was greatly impressed by her backhand, it is a massive weapon. She should make some massive strides this year.

A bit late but during the 1st set of this match Vika injured her upper leg and wasnt moving well. What an awesome performance to defeat the No.1 seed! This should send out a warning to the rest of the tour. It seems as though she's completely recovered from the injury she suffered at the Australian Open. Now that she's knocked out the top seed, her draw opens up quite significantly. However as TheBoiledEgg stated, she must not have a letdown performance.

Great win Vika and good luck! :yeah:

:( Poor Vika, pretty disappointing to lose like that. As for the double faults, 5 of them were in the first set alone, so she obviuosly improved as the match went on.
Hopefully Vika can take a lot out of this tournament. And beating a top 20 player in the first round is huge!

Anyone know what her next tourney is?

That’s a disappointing result, especially after beating one of the best players in the world only a day ago. I guess that's what tends to happen at such a young age, inconsistency. However I think she did enough to suggest that she is one of the games brightest young stars. :)

I disagree where you say that she's not very good on clay. looking at last years results for example she won Pentange which was clay, and also did reasonably well in another couple of clay court events.

Yes, yesterday was a frustrating setback, but i'm sure she can only learn from this, and make the necessary improvements.

She has already 228,25, so she'll reach 274,75... which means 100-105 !

MD starts on May 8, so it looks like Vika's gonna have a break for a while.

Why is she taking a mth long break? she needs some pts to get into top 100 before RG. Anyway, I dont get it why tatishvilli always gets all the WC(s) & Vika dosnt!?

firstly it doesnt quite work out to be a month's rest.. She's got fed cup commitments on the 17th in Bulgaria. It'll be good for her to get a bit of rest aswell, had a good start to the year.

also she's restricted by the AER, so she's gotta do some smart scheduling over the year.

As for the WC's i think i was reading somewhere that she's only allocated 4 for the year.. Used one in Auckland and one in Memphis. I don't know if qualifying WC's count?

After all the talent she has displayed, it kinda slipped my mind that she has a limited schedule to play. Sorry on my part!

Hrm.... seems like Vika didnt get to play any fed cup matches today. Maybe they are saving her for the bigger matches.

Belarus should be superior to Romania. They'll be a huge threat on clay in some years, but not at the moment.

Anyone explain me the logic of playing Dzehalevich instead of Vika..

Belarus is suffering because Vika isn't there. If Vika was there they would be winning.

From the GM:

Vika Azarenka def. Anda Perianu 6-3, 6-3

Watched most of the second set.

Azarenka is power tennis all the way. Her firepower is just insane; when she's focused, she can win 2-3 free points off her serve in each service game (and this is clay). Her groundstrokes are very aggressive; like most of the power young'uns currently rising on the rankings, she always tries to finish each point after three or four strokes. The problem with this kind of game is that it leaves little margin for error, and once the player's focus is gone it's no longer effective; Azarenka served for the match at 5-1 and her first serve went AWOL while the UEs began to pile up. It seemed as if another player had stepped on the court. Here and there Azarenka showed hints of a developing all-court game.

Perianu either tried to match Azarenka's firepower off the baseline (which is something only a top player could hope to do with success), or was just pressured by Azarenka in returning big groundstrokes with not that big groundstrokes of her own. She's a bit inconsistent off the baseline, and hasn't got much of a BH. She did try some nice BH dropshots though. Some worked, some didn't.

Nice win Vika. The next match shouldn't be a problem for her either. It looks like she might play Granados - the #1 seed in qualifying in the last round. That should be a good test, but I think Vika will go through. The qualifying placements should work out well for Vika too. I think this can be a huge tournament for her.

one big thing is Vika needs pts to make Wimbledon cut-off which is in 2 weeks.
a QF in Estoril might just be enough, but we want Vika to win the title ;) :D :)
