Personally I'm not going to watch Vika get beaten by Maria or Maria get beaten by Vika just because some stupid Beijing organizers can't even make a correct draw. Nonetheless as Maria won Tokyo I'll be pulling for Vika to go further in Beijing, she really needs it...
I still just can't believe my 2 favs ever are going to fight themselves just for 3rd round :sobbing: :sobbing:

So a battle of the Belarussians awaits Vika in R1 - there haven't been too many of those lately :) I'm glad she avoided Shvedova as she was probably the most dangerous of all the qualifiers and pushed Vika really close at IW. She's still in Vika's section against JJ which will be a very tough 1R for JJ given the injury she's carrying. Anyway one match at a time, GL to her against Olga.

I'd be surprised if JJ doesn't at least give it a go given her awful record in PM events and slams this season. Her main Chinese sponsor ANTA who supply her outfits will no doubt put pressure on her to play too.

 I don't think JJ would have retired at just 2-5 down in the first set of a final unless there was a genuine problem after the disappointments she's already had this year and needing all the points she can get to qualify for the YEC.

Yari is a dangerous player but still an inconsistent one at the moment which is why she's ranked where she is. She needs to get past Peng first too before she can face JJ.

When the program is opened, press "Import" in the left-hand side. A new window opens and you can browse through your folders to find the video you want to work with.
You will now have the following:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/ChristinaWWW/Guides/Picture01.jpg

Press play, and the video selected in the middle column will play in the right-hand column. Once you find the starting point of the part of the video you want have in your video, press the icon just below the time (below the video) in the right-hand side:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/ChristinaWWW/Guides/Picture02.jpg

And you will now see two videos in the middle column. The first videos is from the beginning to the chosen point, the second video is from the chosen point to the end:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/ChristinaWWW/Guides/Picture03.jpg

TIP: you can hit the pause bottom and go picture by picture to get a better cut.

Now play the second video and press the icon below the time when you don't want anymore video.
The middle video is the part of the original file you want to save in your own video. Right click and press "add to time-line":
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/ChristinaWWW/Guides/Picture04.jpg

You have now added the first clip to your own video. You can see your entire video in the bottom of the program:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/ChristinaWWW/Guides/Picture05.jpg

Now play video 3 from the middle column and press the "Split/divide/cut" icon when you get to a part you want. Video 4 will now be starting at the chosen time. Play it until you don't want more and press the split icon again. Video 5 is created. Right-click on video 4 and add it to your video/project

etc.

Hope it helps

They aren't bad but i would expect Vika/Vera to be doing a bit better than they have been though.

If Vika had stuck with Lena V they would have had an outside chance to qualify for the YEC doubles too as they were in the top 10 in the race just from the few tournaments they played together  Their record together was 10-4 although 2 of those losses were a retirement after 2 games and a w/o.

I've been doing some calculations regarding YEC, Vika is not safe yet :(
Vika is at 4371 points and 15 tournaments. In her 16th tournament she has earned 80 so far, which puts her at 4451

Safina, Serena, Caro, and Dementieva have all already qualified. so they are not interesting. According to my calculations, so has Kuznetsova, but I haven't seen it being official yet.

Behind Vika is
Venus with 4397 (including the points from Beijing, and she is out). Venus is not on the entry list for anymore tournaments this year, so she will stay below Vika :)

Jankovic with 3660. Jankovic has a chance of adding 890 points this week (1000 for winning minus 110 which is the worst of her counting results). Further, Jankovic has signed up for Moscow and can gain 470-120 = 350 in Moscow, and give her a maximum total of 4900. In theory she can go above Vika.

Zvonareva with 3301points. Zvonareva can add up to 999 points this week and 410 in Moscow, which will give her a maximum total of 4710. In theory she can go above Vika.

Pennetta with 3060 points. Pennetta can add up to 930 points this week and 170 in Linz and 340 in Moscow, which will give her a maximum of 4500 points. In theory she can go above Vika.

The rest of the players can't go above Vika even if they win everything they have signed up for.

So Vika is safe in top9 right now.
Though there is a flaw in my calculations. All of Pennetta, Zvonareva, JJ can't win Beijing and the precious 1000 points, so maybe Vika is safe. The math will be too complicated if I were to take the draw etc into account

I think it's because 3 of my faves are in the same section and 2 of them are guaranteed to be gone by the QF's  :sobbing: when 2 of your faves play each other there's no need to be overly nervous because 1 of them has to win/lose. In LA Vika was expected to win coming off good runs at RG and Wimbledon against a still short of matches masha, but here i think Masha is the Pre-match favourite after her win in Tokyo. I'd be amazed if Vika doesn't get to Doha now even if she loses tonight. She should get to at least the QF's of the Kremlin cup too with its depleted field.

Nobody said it was positive  It's nice that she's playing more aggressive than she has been recently but its still doesnt make the loss feel any better for us or for her

Is that right that Masha was complaining about Vika's medical timeout? Marias hardly a stranger to MTO just thinking back to the USO when Oudin was in control and she decided to take one

i guess one 'positive' thing from today'smatch against 'pova was that up until the start of the 3rd set vika had 0 UEs whereas masha had like 4. end of the 2 hr and 59 min match vika only had 6 UEs where sharapova had 12. pretty good right?

Vika was up by a double break, had 30-15 at 5-2, 0-30 on Maria's serve at 5-3 and 30-0 on her own serve at 5-4.

And yet, she failed to produce a single match point. In fact, from 5-2 to 5-7 I don't think she had a single game point. Pretty amazing, isn't it? (and not in a good way)

So what happened?

Like I said in the GM thread, it seemed to me like Vika, perhaps not entirely consciously, became too tentative whenever victory seemed to be within sight. Too many balls were either too short or in the center of the court, giving Maria time to move her around and go for her shots. I wish Vika had gone for bigger first serves when she was up 30-0 or 30-15. You cannot afford to take your foot off the pedal against a player who's in full "banzai warrior" mode and hope the opponent will make a couple more mistakes and give you the win, even when you're up 5-2. Playing it safe might be enough to earn the win over most opponents, but against a Sharapova, a Serena Williams or a Henin, you really have to take more risks and try to grab the match by the throat.

But even though the end of the match ultimately qualifies as a bad choke, my hat's off to Vika for showing great composure from start to finish. In the latter part of the third set especially, she must have felt increasingly frustrated by her inability to close it out, all while having to deal with physical issues (I could see the pain in her eyes ) and a crowd which, for some reason, was enthusiastically rooting for her opponent throughout the match. All these hurdles would have made a win that much more satisfying.

Yes the first serve is definitely the biggest thing holding her back from going on to the next level and today it was highlighted more than ever. At 5-2 you need all the free points you can get against someone like Masha when closing out the match and just making sure you get your serves in won't get the job done. It's something she really needs to work on more than anything in the off season but Antonio doesn't appear overly concerned about her not getting those free points from her serve judging by his advise to Vika during the Li Na match :scared:

I am pleased she at least began to resemble the player which played up until Wimbledon though :)

As a coach and former player I'm sure he knows the "problem". If not that would be highly worrying  But I don't think it's something you can change after a changeover. It's something that takes time and a lot of work. I hope this is one of their work focuses during the off-season because she needs a stronger serve to improve and become a dangerous contender at the slams - assuming that she's not getting luckier with draws and is not handed a GS final like others

Well JJ has crashed out :bigcry:  It sounded as if she's still really struggling with her wrist. It has made it harder for her to overtake Vika now though in the race. Vika is back up to 8 at the moment in the rankings with a 630 point lead over JJ so there is some good news for Vika fans after another bad day. It also looks hard for anyone to overtake her before the AO in that position unless JJ wins Moscow, YEC or Sydney next year which is even better with her standing to lose a lot more points this year :)

Now that the match is a little further away, I guess I can say that it's beginning to look better for Vika. All we need is some nice draws where she is playing matches against worse opponents and she can get the confidence back.

Hopefully an easy draw in Moscow to get the perfect preparation for YEC - can't wait to see her playing some great opponents :)

Let's all cheer up. Vika started the year as no. 16 and is now probably going to end as no. 7 or 8. She won her first title this season and added 2 more - including Miami which is huge.

When in the mean time Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin, one of the alltime GOATs from women's tennis, are both (almost) back on tour + we have perfect facilities for tournaments and still we don't have a single tournament in our country. I think she was originally on the list for Charleston but pulled out with an injury after she had asked for a WC if i remember right  I think playing Warsaw may just be 1 too many though because there's 3 premiers in a row before it and clay's the most demanding surface so it's probably better to get 1 weeks rest before RG. I think she should add New Haven to her schedule too unless she does really well in the USO series before it.

I'll be happy if she passes the round robin:) but hey it's her first YEC and I just want her to enjoy, I'm sure she'll have more chances to play it again.

I agree with that, Will. Would be nice if she could make the SF. Why not? Nobody is playing out of her mind right now and I think Vika's chances aren't bad to do it.

Excited for the draw :bounce:

All tennisplayers now have equal opportunities win YES:) and Vika too. Vika and other top-10 players failed last tournaments.Despite bad results her game looks good in comparison with other. Much will depend on the draw. But it is very difficult to say with whom Vika will get good chance for win.

I am particuraly scared of Sveta  If she plays the way like she did in Beijing final, no one will have a chance against her :sobbing: But Vika at her best can beat them all too :) Go Vika ! :D

Venus twitted this 20 minutes ago:
we just finished the draw ceremony. i dressed unreasonably 80's, Serena was ridiculously 80's. hair to the side, pink lips, whole 9 yards

when will it be released to the rest of us?

Well Vika has got the group i hoped for with Caro, JJ and Safina. A good chance to get out of the RR with this draw if she can play like she's capable of :)

I think this is the best draw possible. But of course I said that about Danka's 2007 draw and it turned out to be so untrue (as Serena pulled out of the other group after 1 match and left a void)

The USO draw was good up until the 4th round, but after that she would of had to face Kim, then Serena to get to the final which is a much tougher run than anyone in the top half had.

Passing the RR still won't be easy at all with her indifferent form of late, but she couldn't have asked for a better draw. :haha: at all the bitterness in GM about the draw. Now some people know how we feel regularly about draws

I am actually quite disappointed with the draw - despite the top line of my signature
I was really looking forward to see my favourites play the very best players - I don't get the same sort of excitement by watching my favourites playing each other -, though that is likely to happen in the semifinal. Here's hoping Safina will lose all of her matches

From GM:

Stars and Heroes to Dazzle at Hong Kong Tennis Classic January 2010
27 / 10 / 2009

(Hong Kong, October 27th, 2009) Stars and heroes are lined up for the Hong Kong Tennis Classic 2010. The city’s showpiece event will feature four of the World’s Top Ten, plus five Grand Slam Champions, and it takes on an exciting new twist with the inclusion of four male legends. Next January, teams from four regions of the world will consist of two ladies and a man, the male player adding big name appeal to a star studded female cast. Athletes include US Open finalist and World No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki, and Sony Ericsson Open champion and World No. 6 Victoria Azarenka who will both represent Team Europe. Opposing divas Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams will represent Team Russia and Team Americas respectively, and they will be supported by World No. 9 Russian Vera Zvonareva and Argentina’s No. 1 Gisela Dulko. Sports icon and proud Chinese Zheng Jie headlines a determined Team Asia Pacific - the shy but tough Sichuan heroine is the new darling of the Hong Kong crowd - and her team mate is Ayumi Morita, Japan’s No. 1 player.

Four male heroes line up alongside their illustrious female compatriots. Team Americas showcase former superstar Michael Chang, who makes a welcome return to Hong Kong. The Chinese American was wildly popular in his prime and still punches above his weight; he has a French Open crown to his name. Team Asia Pacific boasts Thai heartthrob Paradorn Srichaphan who recently returned to the world circuit and he adds power and spice to their team. Dashing Swede and former Wimbledon Champion Stefan Edberg brings his serve and volley style and quiet charisma to an accomplished Team Europe. And Team Russia packs big gun Marat Safin, although the handsome Russian will end his official ATP career this year.

The new team format will feature women’s & men’s singles and mixed doubles matches over four days of action packed tennis at Victoria Park.

TPA President Ian Wade said “We’re thrilled by the quality of our field and our unique format, a first in tennis history we believe, it should be highly competitive and a lot of fun. We can truly say we’ll be seeing “stars and heroes,” and fans will smile in anticipation at the new twist in our line up. It’s terrific, I’m happy and I hope our many sponsors and patrons are too.”

The Hong Kong Tennis Classic 2010 will receive funding from the Mega Events Fund, and this support has enabled the TPA to bring a host of big names to Hong Kong. The event will also continue to be supported by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Information Services Department.

Mr. Wade underlined his thanks to the different government agencies and sponsors, “Hong Kong can be proud it is bringing this cast of stars to its shores. The Mega Events Fund has given the local community, and Hong Kong’s profile an immense international boost, we’re proud of our city and we thank the Mega Events Fund deeply for their belief and support. We are also indebted to the LCSD and the ISD who back us so well every year. To all our sponsors we also say ‘thank you’, and especially Canon HongKong Co., Ltd, Cathay Pacific Airways and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. This is Hong Kong operating at its best.”

With the unique quality of the field, the TPA will appoint a travel agent to develop tourist packages to include air travel, hotel accommodation & tickets to the event and to promote tennis to fans in the region. The TPA will also work with the Hong Kong Tourism Board to promote the event to overseas visitors. Mr. Wade added “the tourist packages will be attractively priced and contain elements to make them especially appealing.”

Tickets for the Hong Kong Tennis Classic will be on sale from the beginning of December. Details will be announced in due course.
