Solid stuff from Vika although her serve is still a bit of a worry because it doesn't look as if she will get many cheap points off it. Some of her crosscourt winners in the first set were

I wish she'd come to the net a bit more too when she hits the ball firmly into a corner which forces her opponents into a weak return to finish it off quickly.

Footnote: She did look great in yellow and black :hearts:

Q: What outfit will you be playing in?
Azarenka: I'll be wearing Nike, which has been sponsoring me for a long time now. It's supposed to be yellow, white and black.

Q: What's your favorite thing to do in New York City during your downtime?
Azarenka: There are so many different restaurants and you can just go every night to a different one.

Q:Speaking of shopping, what's your favorite label?
Azarenka: Gucci

Q:What's the biggest splurge you've made with your prize money?
Azarenka: An apartment.

Haha, thanks?
She signed almost every person asking, I was one of the last.

I've read and seen some of her attitude problems earlier this year, which made her look really rude, even though I loved her game.
But it seems like she has definitely lost some of the attitude to the fans, which I think says a lot about who she is. Would love to see her win some slams. Although she needs a better first serve. Even JJ is serving in the late 90's and 100's routinely.

allrounder
Sep 3rd, 2009, 04:16 PM
I agree about her serve. It's really frustrating to watch because it feel's like her weak serving is the only thing that's stopping her from being a regular slam contender at the moment. She get's a lot of first serves in but they're virtually all easily returnable ones even for non top 20 players. Maybe she needs to work with a new coach that can focus on her serve like JJ has done recently.

I think the attitude has only ever been an on court thing and she's always been very sweet once the match is over, unless you saw something different? Although I like her temper

I agree with you guys that she needs to improve her serve, I'm sure they'll work on it in the off season. Antonio seems to be very into small gradual improvements rather than any drastic changes, so don't expect a complete remodelling but hopefully she can get a bit more power into both serves or at least better placement. btw, I thought she was serving better at wimbledon, getting it deeper and more into the corners.

Vika is on the main page of the US Open website today, it's just highlights of her last match but it says on the headline "azarenka might be best of the young guns" (we knew that already) and thatshe's the only young player with a chance to win the tournament :)

That was just horrible :help:

Was really awful to watch how she went out without really a fight. It's pretty clear though she's not going to get very far without a serious improvement to her first serve. It also seemed as if some of her power has gone that she had earlier in the year and she's playing so much more passively.

Can someone explain to me what happened

Where do I start

It was close to being unwatchable from halfway through the second set from a Vika fans point of view, she just kept letting Fran take control of too many points and was struggling to hold every one of her own service games. The turning point was Vika missing an easy put away on BP for a 2-1 lead in the second set. Fran played really well and had a fair bit of luck with so many close line calls going her way, but Vika didn't really put up much of a fight which was the most disappointing thing. Her temper didn't even seem to fire her up into being more aggressive either and she slammed down her racket once midway through the 3rd set then again after she lost the MP at the end.

No probs :)

It's like watching a different player from the 1 that started the first half of the year that was fearless and was taking the match to her opponent no matter who it was. I don't know where all her power has gone because she never looked like hitting many winners on either side of the court today. It just doesn't add up how her game has dropped so much since wimbledon.

I said the same after seeing the loss too that it was as if we were watching a different player to the one which began the season taking every match to her opponent by being aggressive relentlessly. Her power seemed to disappear and she's more comfortable when her opponents putting a lot of pace on the ball, but even against pushers she usually finds a way to win like she has twice against Caroline and the other players she's beaten easily early on in draws all season. Something just wasn't right yesterday. :(

Right now the YEC are a disturbing thought :scared:

I just hope she's drawn in the same group as Caro if she gets there

She seems to have lost a bit of confidence. Yesterday when she would miss a shot (often by inches) she'd go into her shell and be more afraid to go for the lines. Whereas at the start of the season she might have a little tantrum but it wouldn't affect her aggressive style.

I don't actually think her draw is that bad - certainly the best pre QF draw she's had since about Madrid but the top half certainly looks weaker with less dangerous floaters than the bottom half(although fortunately for Vika most of them are in the bottom section of her half). She should get to the QF here where she'l likely play Dementieva who she did beat the last time they met in Stuttgart last year so there is some hope she may do reasonably well at least :)

Mirza's been a shadow of her former self lately and has barely been able to win a match against anyone, so i think i'd definitely rather her play Vika than Zheng although Vika should really be able to beat both of these players if she plays anything like she's capable of. After what happened at the USO though i'm a bit nervous whoever she'l play early on :scared:

Break My Rapture
Sep 27th, 2009, 12:22 PM
You're right, USO was a terrible experience. I'm super nervous for Vika's match.:help:
Anyway, Vika's returns will be important against both players, since they don't have the most horrifying serves on the tour. So when her serve is a lil' down, she can trust on her return games.:yeah:

allrounder
Sep 27th, 2009, 12:30 PM
With the quality Vika's groundstrokes she always has a chance of breaking her opponents serve. It's what's really frustrating about watching her, knowing that if she had a better serve herself she'd be so much harder to beat because she often has to work really hard just to win her own service games with her not hitting many aces or unreturnable serves even against the lower ranked players :(

Where does everyone think Vika should go from here? her serve and forehand definitely need some improvement and im not sure her movement is as good as it could be either.

In the last set, the fact that she was winning only 38% of points on her first serve was what was really killing her. Her high first serve percentage was of little use because it was clearly doing little damage. She managed to hang in there by winning 79% of second serve points through determination alone. But for her first serve to be having such little effect is a concern. Partly it was also because her follow up with the fh was not really good. Against Lucie she seemed to find some extra pace on some serves when she needed it. She needs that to become a regular thing. Her forehand needs to be stronger, at the moment she seems to be "hit through-able" on that side, she also has a little trouble generating pace on that side and often sprays while straining for extra pace.

allrounder
Oct 1st, 2009, 12:57 PM
Well of course i'd have accepted it as i love Vika, but I just don't like the way she's been playing in the matches she's been losing lately. It's as if she's trying to become a pusher but she doesn't have the movement to play that sort of game. She was allowing Li Na to take control of too many long rallies as she did against Schiavonne. The Vika that started the season up until Wimbledon was playing a lot more ambitiously and was using controlled aggressive tennis. She only won 1% more points on her first serve than her second today.

Agree. Vika was playing fast, powerfull and she really wasn't giving you no chance to push her around... In that match she was accepting Li do the job but the problem is she doesn't have the qualities of a pusher or counter-attacker. Forehand was really off - it produced so many unforced errors throughout the whole match. Although she served 5 aces and just 3 DF's, she only won 1% more points on her first serve than her second. One of the worrying things as well was that a lot of the errors came when she wasn't even attempting to hit winners or generally through aggressive play, but when she was just trying to keep it in play and was mis-hitting or overhitting the ball out of the court from normal baseline rallies. She's wasn't 'brainless ball-bashing' though like the haters in GM result thread try to pretend, nor was she screaming at ballboys either

Li Na was quite fortunate the amount of times she caught the lines at important moments in the match but she was the one going all out to win it.

That's the part worrying me a bit as well. There were so many time when she just missed badly without any pressure from Na. This forehand was horrible today?

In GM they're saying she screamed at the ball kids? :spit: Must have missed that...

Oh dear what a surprise

Masha 2R
JJ 3R
Serena QF

 Are the GM Vika haters the ones doing these draws? 3 former world no.1s before she can even get to the semi's :(

It looks like we may be turning our attention to Moscow not long after this tournament has begun :sobbing: I suppose it at least means she's unlikely to pull out now. :) The horror draw also means we're virtually certain to see her televised on a main court early on, although i'm not sure we'l welcome that with how she is playing :scared:

What was the probality for Vika to fall with Masha and Jelena in 2nd, 3rd, 4th round ? Someone would have asked that question before that draw I would 0 chance and now you get that... Beijing hasn't even started yet that it could be allready over !

The only hope for Vika is that Maria wins Tokyo and takes a WC for another tournament like Moscou or Linz with that awfull Beijing draw !

There must be some anti-vika campain in the tournaments right now that's the worst draw I've ever seen... My 3 favourites are going to fight each other just to get to the 4th round :bigcry: :bigcry:

It's just like the draw she had in Toronto where she had Clijsters, JJ and Safina all in her section before the semi finals.

It's the third time this season she's probably picked up the hardest possible pre-QF draw on paper - those being in LA vs Masha round 2, that draw in Toronto and now this. This is the worst of the lot though because it automatically counts towards her ranking being a premier mandatory  I love both JJ and Masha too but i want Vika to be the one to come out of this section with the poor luck she's this year with her draws. I think she'l need to hope they're both still a bit tired from their runs in Tokyo.

I think she may have to look at playing a bigger schedule next year because with Justine also coming back it's going to be harder than ever for her to get back and stay in the top 8 with the lightish schedule she has at the moment.

:sobbing: what a draw. It's the kind of draw a qualifier or unseeded gets.

Who has it out for Vika?

Would be justice if she wins this one. :)
