JJ only won that due to Vika gifting her 11 dfs, so I guess the rest of her game is in decent order. Hopefully she just had a bad day on serve, after all against Kanepi she served at 95%.

One credit to JJ ;)

Seriously, I didn't mean to suggest that JJ didn't play well to win - clearly she's in good form again. My point was that Vika must have been playing quite well herself to nearly beat Jelena despite serving badly.

Another tournament, another bad draw :o
I was disappointed about the loss to Jelena - but I'm still glad to see my other favourite doing well.

I'm hoping Vika can do better in Toronto :D

Vika and Vera play well together, but I wish she'd stuck with Vesnina after their FO final achievement together. As a Vesnina fan too i can't really see her doing much with Kirilenko - Vika's game compliments hers much better at doubles.

Vika and Vera agreed to play at the slams together at the start of the season until Vera got injured so i'm guessing that must be why she's switched back to prepare for the USO. Hopefully she'l agree to play with Lena next year though :)

At least she is playing doubles again. Maybe this will help her get out of her little slump. :)

Nina.
Aug 16th, 2009, 07:22 PM
I think it's great that she's playing doubles again - no matter who she's playing with. I liked the combination with Vesnina but she also played really well with Vera
She didn't really play the amount of matches in singles she should have played in preparation for the USO so I think it's a good idea to play doubles.

A nice line up of matches there for the whole day, but most importantly Vika's :)

Just watching Clijsters match now - she looks pretty good and I think it'l be as tough as the Sharapova match, if not a bit tougher because Kim has a better serve than Masha. It could be the sort of match Vika needs though to get herself back on track after her indifferent USO series so far. This is all assuming she gets through of course.

C'mon Vika :yeah:

saul1333

Yeah, I am watching Kim's match and she is serving really well and hitting hard off the ground.

I am a little worried.:scared:

allrounder
Aug 19th, 2009, 01:28 AM
I think Vika is at her best when her opponents generate a lot of pace on the ball so the long rallying points shouldn't be a problem, its just the amount of cheap points Kim will get off her serve and her returning of Vika's serves that worry me the most.

For people to say stuff like Kim's making the tour look a joke is just rubbish because it's not as if she's come back and beating players by playing average, she's playing close to the standard she used to play at early in tournaments. If she gets to QF's though and beyond I can see her struggling to keep up her level of play for a while yet.

allrounder

Vika's virtually already no.8 anyway. Vika would have to lose early and Caro needed to make the semi's to overtake her as Caro's losing 550 points off her ranking next Monday when the seedings for the USO are done and Caro's New Haven points from last year come off.

I wish they could seed Masha and Kim somehow even though Kim is a WC and Masha's ranking is low. It has been unfair on Vika to face two former no. 1's in early rounds recently, and if she had to face them again (imagine getting both of them in the same part of the draw) that would be really bad. She would have beaten the majority of the other players for sure.

I'm still confident about her US Open prospects, she just needs a half-decent draw in the early rounds and she'll be away. We know that she is capable of beating anyone, and it's not like she's been outclassed in any of these three losses.

I'm kinda worried. She wasn't outclassed but she still lost all three matches. That won't give her a lot of confindence. She doesn't seem to have the form she had earlier this year.

I hope I'm wrong.

Well, we all know that during Wimbledon the british do always what they wants with the seeds (it's sometimes a scandal !). That's why Maria was a seed. :o

But for the US Open, Maria had announced before Roland Garros that she will use her protected rank for New York...
Protected rank = something near like her former rank before her injury ?
So I really fear she will be seed number 6 or 7 or 8...
I think Protected ranking is not only to entry in a draw but it's used for the seed list too...

================================================== ================================================== =========

To come back to the match against Kim...

The numbers of the match
double fault : 7
Break points won : 4/10
First serve points won (3rd set) : 35% !!!

I don't understand why Vika did so much double fault since a few tournaments...
I would understand if she takes a lot of risk with some big services...

But she has had a good first serve % yesterday (74% - 75% - 81%)
but it's not a very strong serve (first serve won % : 57% - 75% - 35%)

Vika has perhaps very hard draw since a few tournaments (Sharapova, Clijsters) but she played really bad... :o:sad:

But according to me, the main problem is her behaviour ! :fiery:
She has already had this behaviour against safina in Roland Garros (and in a lot of matches since a few weeks).
She is nervous, she is near crying

But she has this behaviour since a few time, very sad on the court...
And she has to correct it if she wants to progress now

She doesn't play very well this time, but she can play very well.
She can do all what she wants, she has a great potential, but her negativ attitude is a big problem today ! :help::sad:

Vika :sobbing: First she comes back in the second set and then completely loses it in the third. Hope she can turn this trend around and find some form going into the USO.

I am pretty sure protected rannking can only be used to get a direct entry into the tournament and not for seeding. Before RG Maria was ranked somewhere outside the top 100 so I think she said she'll use her protected ranking in case she wouldn't have enough points until USO.

I'm pretty sure a protected ranking only allows for entries into tournaments and not actual seedings, certainly not a top 8 seeding if you aren't even in the top 32 to begin with so we have no need to worry there.

Vika always seems upset to me on court if things aren't going perfectly - it's just the way she is.

The big problem with her serve is she often just aims near the middle of the service box and rarely goes for the edges hence her getting so few cheap points and aces. It seems more like a rally starter than an actual weapon at the moment :(

Something is wrong in what you said...

If Sharapova wasn't sure to have a great ranking for USO, why would have she needed to use protected rank ?
If she didn't know if she would have a great rank, do you really think USO organisers can refuse a Wild card to Maria ?:lol::lol:

I have found only one good reason to use a protected rank : to be a high seed, and to be protected during the first rounds...

If you give me another good reason, i will believe you ! :worship:

I disagree with that...
Vika is like that ok, but at the beginning of the season, Vika had a very positiv attitude... :)
Now she has a very negativ attitude on court...

In the past, Vika wanted always to progress, never happy with the way she was playing.
But it was in a general positiv attitude...
Today it's very different.
In the past she was never crying on a court.
Even in Roland Garros when the crow was very rude with Vika, she was very strong ! :bounce:
Today she isn't strong, she is sad on a court

You have a point about the wildcard, of course. But if she could use her PR she wouldn't have needed a WC which then could be handed to some US juniors (and Kim ;)). Maybe she just didn't think of the WC possibility. If it was possible, why didn't she use it for RG and the other tournaments she played in order to avoid a top seed in the first rounds?
My point is, so far I have never seen somebody seeded who used the PR to get into a tournament.
So you shouldn't be worried about Vika's seeding ;)

Seeding
A player may not be seeded using her Special Ranking; however,
a player may be seeded using her actual ranking even if she has
been accepted into the Tournament using her Special Ranking.
No seeding for Maria at the USO then unless she gets into the top 32 on her own but she won't be taking a top 8 seed using her protected ranking.

:o:sad:

Yeah I totally agree... Vika's attitude against Clijters really deceived me very much...!:sad: She was more vexing, screaming than she was trying to get something going right again especially at 4-2 first set...

She started the match so well then nothing, found her level then nothing

And why the HELL did she let go so much in the 3rd set... Like what Vika's a fighter habitually:eek::mad:

Against Safina as you said she had the same attitude and result she lost the match where she was making the russian eat dust... Vika really has to stay focused, regular and really stop panicing if her level drops a bit or her opponent suddenly plays better...

I really wanted Vika to beat Clijters and finally have some success in the US open series wich is quite catastrophic for now hopes she fights in the US open

Honestly, I don't think Vika is "slumping"
All 3 of her losses this Summer were against former #1's (Maria, Jelena, and Kim). I think that she'll reach R4 or QF at USO:angel:

Christinawww
Aug 21st, 2009, 05:50 PM
I wouldn't call it a slump either. IMO her level has dropped a bit from the first months of the year, but she is still able to produce the amazing tennis we all love, she's just not able to maintain it for the entire match. She loses momentum too fast and gets frustated by the other player producing winners.

Nina.
Aug 22nd, 2009, 11:32 AM
I also wouldn't say it's a slump. She is still playing good tennis but it's probably not as convincing as it's been in the first part of the year. But she is still young so I think it's normal to have some ups and downs.
I think when she wins her first rounds at the USO her confodence will also improve again she'll be able to have a great tournament.

well Sharapova will be seeded now. Right now Masha is in the group of players (25-32) to face Vika's group (1-8) in the 3rd round. If Masha wins Toronto she'll be in 17-24, which is much better seen from a Vika point of view, so tonight, for the first time in history, I'll be hoping Masha wins. Guys be glad you don't live in Australia, it's on at 1AM Tuesday here.

Anyway, best of luck, let's hope she can improve on a pretty disastrous US open series so far.

I'm going Monday night, starts at 7 PM and gates open at 6 PM so I won't see Vika unless she plays a 7 hour marathon, and even then I doubt I'd get a seat if the match was that long:lol:
Hopefully Vika can close it out in straight sets though:p

Vika and Vera have been drawn against the Bondarenko sisters in the doubles draw. This will be a very tough 1st round match but hopefully they'l get back to the sort of level they started the season at and come through it.
