I started watching Vika's match against Barrois when she was already trailing 1-5 in the 1st set. That was an unpleasant surprise to say the least.

But what happened after that was pretty amazing. She utterly dominated Barrois during the next 5 games, to the point that I was scratching my head as to how Vika had managed to fall this much behind in the first place. From 1-5 to 6-5, Vika hit something like 12 or 13 winners (in very damp and slow conditions) and only lost 6 points, 2 of which were double faults!

The second set was fairly even (mostly because of the German's effective serving), but Barrois choked a bit towards the end and Vika was pretty solid when she served for the match at 6-5.

An unexpectedly close match, but Vika really raised her game when she needed to, and overall her attitude was very good. Well done!

I was not at home during the match, but after reading about what went on yesterday (the crowd getting on her back, the tears, the 1-4 hole in the 2nd set, Vika's mom getting involved), I'm actually relieved I didn't get to see it. I always get nervous when she plays, even when the match is not that close, and I'm not sure how I would have coped with all that tension and melodrama. :scared:

Let's hope for the strong start today. The match has yet to appear on the OOP (:help:), but I'm guessing they'll put it on the same court (1), in second place (after Haas vs. Chardy).

DAMN i can't believe i missed this match!!! it sounded amazing!!! azarenka i love so much because of her passion. she definitely does seem to be unbeatable when she's got it together, only that sometimes takes a while... i also fell in love with suarez-navarro when she beat venus in the aus open this year, such an amazing match/effort.
ANYWAY, when the hell is this on? must watch the concluding set. according the official roland garros site it's on at 11am french time and it's like 8am there now.

(go vikaaa)

I checked again and I don't see Vika anywhere:shrug:

Christinawww
May 30th, 2009, 09:19 AM
Do you guys think the break is good or bad for Vika? At first I thought it would be good as she would be able to talk with Antonio and regroup, but after reading all the comments in GM, she seemed to really be playing superb tennis in the last games of the second setting: hitting winners and with a variety. Also Vika has been a slow starter in all of her matches. But since it is only a 3rd set, no time for a slow start.

VIKA?
May 30th, 2009, 09:23 AM
I think it's bad:o at the final of the second set she was playing amazing so I think if they had played the 3rd set Vika would win but I don't know... maybe it's good because she talked with Antonio so I don't know.

KazeKarter
May 30th, 2009, 09:40 AM
I'm thinkin' it's bad, Vika was really firing at the end of the second and she is a notoriously slow starter so I'm rather worried. Damn RG, invest in some friggin' lights I can't really see re-started games as fair, no matter who wins.

Edit: Vika's up second on Court 1 apparently

the always put the "to be finished" matches as the second match. I think it is because the players were up late and need a couple of extra hours to rest

Vika! :woohoo:

The RG crowd never fails to annoy the hell out of me each and every year (and I've been watching tennis for a long time). Always looking for an excuse to whistle and jeer. They really seem to enjoy being obnoxious to the players.

This phenomenon is specific to the French Open. The Paris indoor crowd at the Open Gaz de France is usually well-behaved by comparison.

Like I said in GM, I wouldn't be surprised if the next match turns into a circus à la Larcher de Brito vs. Rezai. Especially if Ana complains about Vika's noise. :D
Vika will probably have the crowd against her right from the start. It will be "interesting" to see how she reacts.

I've just finished translating the short interview published in the June 2009 edition of FHM France. I'm guessing most people who come here don't understand French, so I figured an English version might be useful to some of you. :) I deliberately chose to stay as close to the text as possible.

-------------------------------------------------

Victoria Azarenka
Age: 19
Place of origin: Minsk, Belarus
WTA ranking: 8 [at the time the magazine went to press]
Singles titles: 4 [including ITF]
Doubles titles: 6 [including ITF]
How much her name is worth in Scrabble: 21 points

The newest tornado coming out of Eastern Europe is Belarusian rather than Russian. She is also very good looking.

When did you start playing tennis?
I was 7 years old. The first year, I was only hitting balls against a wall. Then, I found myself on a court... where there were 25 of us at the same time! I only got my own court when I turned 12!

Do you like wearing dresses [?] to play?
No, I think that would be a bit too much. Or rather, not long enough! Tennis is a rather conservative sport.
[note: although "robe" means "dress", judging from her answer I doubt that was the actual word used in the original English interview...]

When you're playing, do you notice men looking at you?
Honestly, I don't pay much attention to that. But I'm hoping to see a difference after this magazine comes out!

Do you get upset easily?
I've broken a lot of rackets. But I'm learning to control myself...

How did it feel to have a camera focused on you during our photoshoot?
It was fun because I felt different: I felt like a model instead of a tennis player.

What kinds of gifts you do enjoy getting from men?
I love Dior shoes. I buy myself a pair whenever I can. I also like clothing, jewelry, handbags... I'm not picky!

"robe"? and i dont understand her answer either
The word "robe" doesn't have the same meaning in French and English. In French, it means a dress. Her answer suggests she was asked if she would be willing to play in a skimpier outfit than what she's used to wearing. The problem, of course, is that I'm translating back into English an interview that must have been done in English initially and then translated into French for publication (I doubt Vika speaks French). So basically I'm doing a translation of a translation. :)

I don't think the tennis establishment is THAT conservative, by the way. Players like Benesova, Rybarikova or Safarova (among others) sometimes wear skirts that are so short they actually look more like a wide belt. Although it is true that one of Benesova's outfits was deemed unacceptable by a chair umpire in Estoril a few weeks ago.

When you're playing, do you notice men looking at you?
Honestly, I don't pay much attention to that. But I'm hoping to see a difference after this magazine comes out!
:hehehe: sly much?
Vika has obviously never noticed me :hearts: and  in the stands when I'm watching her practice. Which is probably for the better, come to think ot it. :o Although I do try to be discreet about it. ;)

thanks for the interview translation, interesting questions they've asked her imo, lil' weird and off-base.
You're welcome. I think this interview is pretty much what one would expect from a so-called "men's magazine". They're probably assuming their average reader is not terribly interested in tennis except as a major source of hot Eastern European female athletes.

Vika :woohoo:
The first few games were high-quality stuff. Ana was playing very well, as she said in her press conference, but Vika was more than holding her own. Ana started to fade away after that (she was feeling dizzy, apparently ), which in a way is a shame because the match could have been a classic had she maintained her level until the end. But full props to Vika for keeping her intensity and dealing adequately with a hostile and obnoxious crowd. :armed:

Too bad she has to face Safina so early. The Russian has been wiping the floor with her opponents so far, and is clearly the player to beat. On the other hand, a win over her would be very impressive indeed.

The first set was absolutely sublime tennis from Vika.
Then she got down 1-4 and came back to 4-4 only to basically donate the next two games to Safina.

She just kept making so many errors, especially on big points, deuces, 30 alls, etc. :(

Good tournament.

Firstly, this was an amazing tournament from Vika coming through the Suarez-Navarro match and then losing only 5 games to the defending champion to reach her first QF. Even better considering her struggles on the clay this year. This has been a huge breakthrough, can't complain losing to Safina, and she's still in with a chance of taking home a trophy of some kind.

That first set was possibly the best I've ever seen Vika play. Totally thrashed the in-form player on tour. Also loved the turnaround from 1-4 to 4-4 in the 2nd set too.

My main regret for this match was how she fell away in the end and just mentally wasn't there anymore. Still a good match for her first QF and should be a big learning experience.

I am very sad.:o She did not have luck in this match. I was surprised that Vika never gives your opponent to play her tennis. It is great. Vika all matches wins and loses herself. I think if the game will improve and more she becomes number one. And an important moment in her game, it is emotional. She must understand that she should always be very calm!

Chance wasted today :( But Vika showed the world the brand of amazing tennis she can play (name any shot, she has it) when she's on. I knew immediately that she was losing it mentally after the racket throwing started.

But a grandslam breakthrough to a QF is good for Vika :) Keep improving & she will reach a final soon!

I'm not sad. It was always going to be a tall order to beat Safina, and I think Vika played some excellent tennis. It just wasn't hers this time, but it was still great to reach a QF in a grand slam (in her worst surface, too!) and she gave the world #1 a hard time. She's proved she has the game to be one of the world's best - her mind will catch up.

Whilst it was a great tournament for Vika, that is a gutting way for it to end.
That first set was absolutely amazing. Only one unforced error and she was absolutely dominating. Once she got back to 4-4 in the 2nd set it was her chance, Safina was starting to lose the plot big time, but Vika throws in a soft service game and hands the break back to Safina who didn't even need to work for it. Please get the emotions in check Vika, thats all thats holding her back from winning these tight matches :(

Even though this kind of loss actually hurts even more than a straight-set beat-down, I think Vika made a strong statement yesterday.

She played an almost perfect first set. Hitting only one UE while playing such an aggressive style against someone who had only lost 5 games in her 4 previous matches was simply phenomenal. But I knew it was going to be almost impossible to stay at this lofty level for an entire match.

I'm not sure I agree with people who think her temper cost her the match. It was *nerves* more than anything which caused her to fall behind in the second set, and that's not the same thing. Nerves made her hit DFs on some crucial points, and there were some instances where she simply chose the wrong shot to play. The emotional outbursts were a consequence, not a cause. Vika plays with such intensity that evacuating all that nervous tension between points is a psychological, if not physical necessity. I think it comes with the territory. The only real letdown was the way she got broken at love after having worked hard to bring the score back to 4-4, and then wasted a 0-30 lead when Safina was serving for the set.

I reckon Vika has lost matches because of a bad attitude in the past, the most recent example being that Rome semifinal against Kuznetsova in which she basically threw it away because of one bad line call that went against her. But that did not happen yesterday. She never stopped competing. And to be honest, she didn't play poorly in the 3rd set, despite the 6-2 score. She still managed to hit more winners (10) than UEs (8). But Safina was at her best during that final set, and she gave Vika very little to work with.

Although I have yet to see Vika & Elena play with my own eyes, there seems to be good chemistry between them (as one would expect from "best friends for life"), and I think they have a good chance of making it to the final. If only I could find a way to watch the court 1 live stream on the France 2 website from outside that country (I haven't had any luck with French pr0xies so far...)

and Vaidisova28, I agree. Vika has been better than "just" reaching the QF. She just had such a tough draw. But she played super well, and even though she lost, I think this tournament shows us and herself, that Vika is ready to be a contender in all tournaments, and be a threat to the big names.

Glory = winning the biggest tournaments by beating the best, not riding cakewalk draws and bullshitting one's way to SFs, finals and titles ]à la Footnote Ivanovic.

All the difficulties Azarenka has been through (the slow transition from junior to top 100 player, the bad draws, the choking) have hardened her. She has had to work hard for everything she has achieved so far, and accordingly knows she must continue to do so.

If we analyse the begining of this season 2009, I think there are 4 players very strong and the others... Serena, Dinara, Svetlana and VIKA... :worship:

Jelena and Ana have found their limits : Ana has no mental when the matches are difficult (and she is always injuried :fiery:) and Jelena push the ball in the court but is never attacking ... perhaps it's enough to beat players in the top 30, but not to beat the top 10 !
And Elena Dementieva is really a mystere since the Australian Open and since her final lost in Paris...

Perhaps Maria Sharapova could be the 5th big of this season !

I don't know if tomorow the double final is on the Chatrier (sold out) or on another court (the lenglen perhaps...)
If she is playing on another court, I will go to Roland Garros tomorrow to take photos and to make videos of the final of Vika :bounce:

I disagree with you...

First of all, I think Vika is ready to win big tournaments... She was the only one to fight Serena in Melbourne and she will be perhaps the only one to take a set to Dinara in Roland Garros this year...
Now she needs a little chance in her draw too...
I think Dinara has defeated Vika because she wasn't so tired than Vika... because she has had a very easy draw with very easy matches...

I think glory = to win...

Who remember that Agassi won Roland Garros against... Medvedev ? Not against Courier or Bruguera !!!
Everybody remember only that Agassi won Roland Garros...

If federer wins Roland Garros, everybody will remember that Federer will have won Roland Garros !
Nobody will remember that it was a fake tournament with players as Nadal and Djokovic so tired by the very long Clay season... Who will remember that Federer will have defeated Haas, Acasuso and another players without mental ? Nobody...

when you watch the Tennis History, you only remember the victories... the way is forgotten very fast...
So it's not a problem if Vika win tournaments with easy draw... the most important thing is she wins tournaments...

I see where you are coming from, however, I disagree to an extent. Of course I don't want Vika playing De Los Rios in the quarters, Groth in the semis, and defeating Craybas in the finals... but, I think her draw was unreasonable compared to some of the girls in the semifinals who had respectable draws. I called Sam and Domi's draws "easy" because they are ones I think Vika would have torn through.. even though they did play some decent players. However, no way could they have gotten to the semis or even the quarters through Vinci, Suarez Navvaro, Ivanovic, and Safina. It's not a bad thing to get a draw like that... but it just sucks because there is only so much a player can do in a two week period.

And it really bothers me that Domi is the first of the 18-20 generation to make a semifinal. It should have been Vika. She has had a better year, a better record at slams, and played much better in Paris these last weeks. Hopefully Vika gets a better draw in Wimbledon and can one up her.

vaidisova28: yes, Vaidisova broke through way earlier than the rest. Just like Sharapova. Sharapova is from 87 just as Ivanovic and Chakvetadze, but when she won Wimbledon in 2004, Ivanovic was still in the junior draw, these talented early break through girls really flabbergast me sometimes.

I'm such a huge fan of this generation. I think they are more appealing than the last (Ivanovic, Jankovic, Sharapova, Chakvetadze, Russians).
Vika is Vika. (no need for explanation in this thread ;) )
Radwanska plays with more finesse than the other girls and has a huge mouth/attitude off court.
Caroline is the definition of consistency and has a great personality in interviews.
And in addition to those 3 is Vaidisova, who will hopefully be back soon, Sorana Cirstea  , Cibulkova, Cornet, and even Pavlyuchenkova.

If they can all play well consistently, it will be very fun to see them start battling for slams and the #1 rank.

I am very excited about these players too. You also have Lisicki in this generation, Navarro and to some extend Szavay (she's from December 88).
Vika is ahead of the rest in stats as she has a better win-loss ratio, and has a positive win-loss ratio against "players ranked above herself". Most players have a negative ratio. But...compared to Wozniacki, the Radwanskas, Cornet, Cibulkova, Cirstea, Lisicki, Pavlyuchenkova, Kvitova & Kleybanova (Szavay isn't in my list because I started it when she was in a major slump, but I should add her), Vika comes out on top in most categories.

Vika, along with the Aga, have the most top 10 wins, which is 9 (2 in slams for Aga, 1 for Vika)
She has the highest career ranking, 8.
She's won the biggest title, Miami. Caro and Aga have one more title each, but obviously, I think the fact that Vika won Miami means a lot more.
She also has a positive H2H against them...14-2 (this might be out of date). She lost to Wozniacki once and Aga once, but still leads the H2H 2-1 against them. She has never played Kleybanova or U. Radwanska to my knowledge. And like I said, Szavay's not on my list.

Christinawww
Jun 7th, 2009, 06:49 AM
I'm a huge nerd too :) In my table I haven't compared her to the other youngers. Only h2h vs top10, top20, high rank, time in top10, time in top20, time used to get from top20 to top10, win-loss ratio career, and win-loss ratio after cracking the top20 and after cracking the top10.
Would love to see your table :)

Christinawww
Jun 8th, 2009, 06:34 AM
keep checking her official webpage. They must update sooner or later. But you can kind of guess some of it:
Vika doesn't play a lot of tournaments
Vika is now top10 and has some restrictions. Now I haven't read the rules properly for the "new top10 players" but I am guessing she plays Cincinnati and Toronto as they are Premier5 events and top10 players must play 4 of 5.
She is only allowed to play 1 international, so I don't think she'll play the 3 weeks following wimbledon
I doubt she'll play New Haven as it is right after two premier5 and right before the US Open
And then I am guessing Stanford but not LA

so it would be (GUESS only)
26+27 Wimbledon
28 Rest
29 Rest
30 Rest
31 Stanford
32 Rest
33 Cincinnati
34 Toronto
35 Rest
36 + 37 US Open
38 Rest
39 Rest
40 Tokyo
41 Beijing
42 Rest
43 Rest or Moscow (before YEC it is good to rest, but Moscow is the closest to a home tournament, and maybe she needs the points, or maybe she won't qualify for YEC)
44 YEC

she might add 1 more tournament, maybe a nice little international, but personally I have no idea which one she prefers.
This year she has played 9 tournaments so far and in my Vika schedule here she will add 9 (including Moscow and YEC), that's a total of 18 which is fairly realistic IMO.

I have a friend who is going to Eastbourne. I've ordered him to stalk Vika...well take some pictures of her. Preferably none-match pictures. Eastbourne has a strong line-up I think:

Eastbourne:

Dementieva
JJ
Zvonareva
Ivanovic
Azarenka
Petrova
Wozniacki
A.Radwanska
Bartoli
Cornet
Medina Garrigues
Zheng
Kanepi
Mauresmo
Chakvetadze
Navarro
Kleybanova
Srebotnik
Wozniak
Bammer
Li
Stosur
Sugiyama
Razzano (LDA)
4 WC
4 Q

that's 6 top10, 7 from top11-20 and 8 from top21-30 from the original cut date.

Do any of the Veteran's here know what Vika's like on grass? I've never seen her play on it.

Temperenka
Jun 11th, 2009, 02:55 AM
Honestly, I don't remember seeing her play too often on grass. She is much stronger on hard courts, but I wouldn't say she is a weak grass court player. Last year, she lost in the 3rd or 4th round of Wimbly to Petrova in two extremely tight tiebreakers. And Nadia is no slouch on grass. I think she should have a successful year and will hopefully be able to keep her 1st service % high enough to use it to her advantage.

Christinawww
Jun 11th, 2009, 06:11 AM
Vika has played a total of 9 matches on grass, winning 4, losing 5.
She lost last year to Petrova in the 3d round, but that was during Petrova's hot run of a final in Eastbourne and QF in Wimbledon.
Grass in the olden days rewarded good servers and to some extend still do, but the grass (as far as I've heard) is a lot slower. Grass is fast and has a low bounce (if I remember correctly). Vika seems to struggle with high shots and it is unlikely she will get many high boucing shots on grass, so that is good.
In juniors, she reached the SF twice. One year losing to Ivanovic in a close 3-setters. Ivanovic is 2 years older.
I would say Vika should be good on grass, I don't see anything scary about the combination of Vika and grass, though her past senior results aren't the best.

It's a good draw, there's no reason why Vika can't beat anyone in the draw on this surface (I think she'd be the favourite playing Jankovic). The first couple of rounds are a chance to get used to the grass and then it gets a bit tougher but as long as she wins her first 2 matches that's ideal preparation for Wimbledon IMO.

Groenfeld lost 0 and 3 last week to Safina and Cirstea isn't quite as good on grass and is still a bit "hungover" from her RG run.

I don't think we have anything to worry about until Maria. If Vika is healthy that is.

And Maria has been beatable thus far. Na Li handled her pretty easily in Birmingham 6-4, 6-4. And you have to think that by the 4th round, her fitness could be catching up with her. Hopefully, if healthy, Vika can beat Maria.

Then against Serena. Serena has 19 grandslam losses in her career. 10 are in the quarterfinals, where Vika will meet her. I still think Serena on grass might be a bit too much for Vika. Similar QF run to Roland Garros (beat champion in R4 and go down to favorite).

However, if she manages to find a way to beat Serena, or Serena loses earlier, the job obviously gets much easier all the way to the final.

:tape: Too far ahead of myself.

Sharapova was on her 5th match in 5 days against Li. Unlike Birmingham there's a day off between matches at Wimbledon so Sharapova should be able to recover from her previous match before playing her next match. Plus she should be able beat her opponents a lot easier than on grass than on clay thus saving energy. Sharapova's losses so far have been from when she's had very little energy left in the tank.

Corswandt

I can not understand why she has so many injure in her career.

Still overplays + doubles. Should stop wasting her time with the latter IMO, but after years on end whining about all the stuff Lena D. should do or should stop doing while watching her career management go from "nonexistent" to "idiotic", I pretty much gave up on dispensing such career advice.

Draw is bad. Two veterans very comfortable on grass for the two first rounds. If Vika isn't sharp enough, she may lose there and then. Fortunately Brémond seems to be in poor form, and Vika's average level of match sharpness is just about the highest this side of Sharapova. 3R may also be tricky. BTW the draw is full of slumping, overranked players who are useless on grass just waiting to be taken out. I predict mayhem.

Sharapova 4R - if Sharapova makes it that far. If she does, piece of cake. Vika won't even need to kick into fifth gear to win handily. More worried about Petrova. I still remember her serving from up a tree at the Stuttgart SF last year.

QF vs Serena on a fast surface - always extremely tough, unless Serena has a bad serving day.

Still, not complaining. Glory = battling through tough draws, not winning by default.
