:rolls: GM is crazy.

Watch Vika lose 1R in Charleston and see the reaction in GM, you can gurantee she'd lose most of her new "fans" :o

and the Sharapova comparison is old now. I've replied to loads of those threads but I'm so bored of it now. I don't know why everyone is so keen to see the "new Sharapova" when the original one isn't even retired. I don't see the similarity in their games, the only thing they have in common is their grunts and even those are different.

100% agree!:worship:

Totally agree with everything said here. Granted, I have only been a fan of Vika since last summer, but I have become a huge fan of hers. These girls are really susceptible to terrible slumps and the true fans will be on this board saying "WTF was that, Vika?" after her 5th straight loss and looking for reasons for the slump. Believe me, I have been a Nicole fan for a while. ;)
And usually only the true fans would be posting on this thread anyways, so screw the GM people.

True. There are some who like her because she beat Serena and will lose interest if she hits a slump.

However if she keeps on winning, I see way more haters in the future. Especially if she beats a healthy Williams sister.

What is the fan if he dont supports her in difficult moments, he is not a fan!! :o I was very surprised that winner in this tournament became the main news in our country! The president of our republic congrats Vika and her mother! On all TV Channels I saw a lot of interviews about Vika, about her family, about her first coach!! In our country tennis is not very popular game as a football in example! It is very good that in my country a great number of people knows her and I believe that they will support her in all moments! inlove:

yup, the best players are often the ones who are hated the most as they are a threat to other people's faves. Just look at Sexysova's list of hated players. Masha is close to the top in both most loved and most hated. People rarely care enough about the "average" player, but either love or hate the great players.

have you seen this:

"I can spend it in one day," Azarenka said. "I'm not allowed to drink in the States yet, but I'll definitely go celebrate somewhere."

Hello :wavey:

It is the first time I am posting in an active player forum, I don't know why but I usually read what you are writing there only. When Justine was still playing, I wish I posted in her subforum more often  But this year, I want to try to post in my fave's subforums ! :D

I am not really a bandwagoner because I have been following Vika since a few years, since 2006 actually. I remember her match against Sharapova in Moscou, she saved 7 or 9 setpoints and won 7-6 (9) 6-2 , I was so thrilled ! But she lost to Dementieva just after  Also she defeated Hingis at the USO 3-6 6-1 6-0  I am strange because I was disappointed she had lost to Kuzzie after but in Miami, I was really sad because of the semifinal :help: But I can't help "forgiving" Vika for that  I really like her !

So you can count me as a fan :D I really hope she will be close of Justine in my fave list, I am missing those moments where you go crazy at each point :sobbing:

Congrats to Vika ! :D

One of the easiest ways to tell when a player has "arrived" is by the sudden surge in haters on the GM. As you said, it's when a player becomes a threat to the established regime that they get vilified. Consider this a good thing.

here:
http://www.hantuchova-fan.com/azarenka-fan/Points.php
you can see a break-down of Vika's points. She'll drop 120 points from Charleston last year, but the Olympics will move up and count instead, which is 96 points. So she only loses 24 points. Then go to the offial wta page and see how big a gap she has to her followers. No need to worry about ranking yet. She's not defending anything big until the first week of May, as she reached Berlin SF last year.

I'm sure she will be back for the European clay court season. This might be the best decision since she has played 11 matches (excluding doubles) in the past 2 tournaments.

Oh, and I have to ask, Christina, are you Danish?

Christinawww
Apr 8th, 2009, 12:31 PM
yes I am Danish, why :)

I think Vika will be back strong in Stuttgart. I don't believe the injury is serious. Though it is the same injury that caused her to retire in the QF at Zurich last year.
I think it is just to get more rest. The European clay court season is tough, Stuttgart, Rome, and Madrid without breaks in between, 3 big tournaments with lots of top players, so it will be an advantage to be well-rested. I think it is a very wise decision from Vika and her team.

Just watched the new interview on the WTATour website. The contrast between Vika's on-court and off-court personas is interesting. During matches, she's intense and feisty, but in interviews she always appears soft-spoken, calm and collected. She's very competitive, yet humble and down to earth once the match is finished. She reminds me of Nadal in that way.

Regarding her decision to withdraw from Charleston, I can't say I'm surprised. I also think it's a wise move. The last thing we want is a burnout, and although that shoulder problem is probably nothing serious, these "early warning signs" from the body should never be ignored.

Oh dear. Why would it be odd? Regardless of Serena's condition, our girl just won her biggest title so I was celebrating that more than anything. Anyway, I seem to remember most people in GM (including me) wishing Serena a recovery. It's never nice to see a player moving like that in pain.

In turn, I could find it odd why most Serena fans insisted on reminding everyone about Serena's injury and were incapable of crediting Vika on a good tournament, instead saying Vika would never lose to Serena again.

But this place is not for arguing about useless stuff like that. We are here only to cheer for and discuss Victoria Azarenka :wavey:

Vika

yeah I miss her too. I don't think she will lose form. I think she has been practicing on the red clay, working hard and getting ready for 3 weeks of tennis: Stuttgart, Rome, Madrid. Also, she won Brisbane (albeit a small tournament) playing well as her first tournament of the year, so breaks do her good. She also had almost 3 weeks off between Memphis and Indian Wells.

Her doubles partner is injured, wonder if Vika will just skip doubles as she already said it was just a minor thing in the biggest tournaments, or if she will find another partner? I hope she only plays singles in Stuttgart, Rome, and Madrid as the amount of tennis in those 3 weeks might be rather high. And then doubles in French Open.

Vika did an interview for a Spanish newspaper (http://www.marca.com/2009/04/28/tenis/1240911666.html) :

(google translator)

Victoria Azarenka (Minsk, 1989) is one of the big surprises of the first third of the season. The Belarussian won the last three tournaments, the Miami-and it proved to be an alternative security for the future. From Stuttgart, where he plays this week, 'Vika' as her friends call her, has heeded the call MARCA.com ...
"I started to believe in myself a little more and now I know I can win tournaments and important matches"
You come to win in Miami to Serena Williams in the final. Was it the most important victory of your career?
Yes, I would say that was the biggest moment my career. I always wanted to do something, but never thought I could. I think it was my wish what he did that really happen. I have improved a lot since last year. I started believing in myself a little more and now I know I can win games and major tournaments.
You are the world's number 8. How far can you go?
The aim of all is to reach number one, but soon will be the seventh, then sixth, then fifth ... We must go step by step.
What do you like most about your game? What think you need to improve?
I like that this year he won three titles, I have gained much confidence and I've shown I can beat players ranked better than me. Anyway, I wish to continue working to improve every day, especially my serve.
Who is or was your idol in the world of the racket?
When I was little my idol is Steffi Graf because she was a role model both as an excellent tennis player as a great athlete. She had a good game, an excellent and very classy inside and outside the track.
Who are your best friends in the circuit?
Some of my best friends are Anna Chakvetadze, Elena Vesnina and Caroline Wozniacki.
"There are many players in the circuit that may be the number one"
Dinara Safina is the new queen of the WTA. Do you think Russia is the best in the world right now?
I think a very good tennis player Dinara really competitive for a number of the world, but there are many players who can be number one. ¿Keep? There are several players that are good and consistent when it comes to winning Grand Slam tournaments and could be on top for long.
How did the tennis today?
The women's tennis is very competitive and with an emerging new generation. There are few players who have the opportunity to win tournaments and Grand Slam, something that seemed impossible before. Before they were a few players who dominated the circuit and now everything is much more dispersed.
What is the best and the worst of tennis?
I think it is best to travel around the world and play in different cities each week. The worst part is being away from home, your family and friends for a long time.
What is the level of tennis Belarus?
Juniors are really good with a high level of tennis, but in high level that not many players out, although there are many professionals, like other countries ...
In addition to good tennis player, is considered one of the 'beautiful' circuit. What has had more offers of sponsorship, photo shoots or potential boyfriends?
(Laughing). Right now I have many offers for photo shoots ...
If you have not been tennis, what would you like to be?
If I had not devoted to tennis, it would have gone to college and had studied 'International Business' (' International Business').
"I love shopping, especially buying shoes"
How is Victoria Azarenka off the tracks?
When I enter or not to play I love to shop, especially I love buying shoes. I also like going out with my friends or do something fun.
How do you keep in touch with your people?
I use messenger through my Blackberry.
I have said you like rap. Are you the singer?
I love Beyoncé ... and yes, when I'm singing in the shower.

There does seem to be a pattern forming. Of course one can't say anything just yet. Clay season's still young. I do think she can have a great run at the French Open though. :bounce:

Hopefully she'll forget about this loss soon and move on.

Because she has won Miami, I am no longer worried. If she ever starts to slump, she will remember her potential.

Today ES shown Vika vs Dulko, I watched and it was a very poor match:tape: was a break party. Vika didn't play like she always does, a lot of UE and not many winners:o and btw Vika was very frustated the whole match:sad::hug:

I saw the entire match on TennisTV.

Vika never looked comfortable, and was unable to maintain any kind of momentum. Her footwork was suspect. Dulko played a great match though. Definitely the best I've seen her play in a while. She hit very few UEs and was actually more aggressive than Vika on serve. :o Also, she used some annoying yet smart tactics against Vika. Dulko was feeding her lots of pace-killing junk balls, and Vika was not able to find an effective "riposte" (as the TennisTV commentator liked to say). This approach would not have worked against Vika on a faster surface, but on red clay it was a different story. Vika was already getting frustrated after the first few games (you can read our girl's face like a book ;)), and although Antonio tried to bring her back to a more positive attitude, it was just not going to happen today. She looked very sad at the end.

Am I disappointed? Of course I am. But it's not the end of the world. Vika has been having such an outstanding year that any kind of setback has become an unpleasant surprise. We are of course entitled to have high expectations for her, but still there are bound to be a few bumps along the path to greatness. :)

And who cares about the Vika bashing going on in GM? I knew there would be a backlash against her as soon as she lost a match she was "supposed" to win. Attitudes in GM have become quite predictable. The level of maturity on display over there is often comparable to a kindergarten's. :tape: A lot of people have jumped on the Vika bandwagon in the last few months, especially since Miami, and I'm sure some people will jump off it at the earliest opportunity. That's fine with me. Who needs these pseudo-fans anyway?

Caro said that the indoor clay was very weird and different from the outdoor clay and that many of the players are having trouble with their movement on the indoor clay. Right now I take this as explanation for the odd movement from Vika, and I am still confident that her confidence is high and she is ready to do some damage in Rome.

another fact to cheer us up:

Look at Vika's match ratios in different levels:

Grand Slams: 27-13
Mandatory (old Miami, and 4 new): 17-4
Tier I & Premier 5: 22-10
Tier II & Premier: 16-13
Tier III/IV & International: 47-18

Her ratio in tier II which is quivalent to Premier is the worst of them all. So she had the odds against her in so many ways. Rome is luckily Premier 5 and then mandatory Madrid. :)

Vika lost to Niculescu before in juniors but has had no trouble on the main tour, winning both their meetings comfortably, including 6-3 6-2 in Rome last year and a double bagel since then.

Wozniacki will be difficult but I think Vika is slightly more comfortable on clay than she is. As for Serena, well if Vika gets that far it will have been a good enough tournament already so nothing to lose there. This is Serena's worst surface but she still moves alot better than Vika which is vital on clay.

Good luck Vika! :hearts:

Christinawww

I'm not worried about Niculescu or a qualifier. Hate she has Caro, but on clay I will give the advantage to Vika. On grass it's Caro. Possible QF against Serena. I hope we get that far, and that it will be Serena playing. Serena can be scary good, but she hasn't played since her terrible loss in Marbella and she clearly was injured. So how her movement will be is questionable.

Vika and Caro in the same part of the draw. Arghhh! :banghead:
And if they meet in the 3rd round, it probably won't even be shown on TennisTV. :(

Thinking back about the way Vika was serving against Dulko in Stuttgart, I hope she wasn't holding back because she was feeling pain in her shoulder. The official reason for her pulling out of Charleston a couple weeks ago was an inflamed right shoulder, after all. I don't want to sound paranoid, but the last thing I want is a repeat of the Sharapova situation. Maria kept playing with her bad shoulder for quite a while before the full extent of the injury became publicly known.

I am totally in the same boat as you are. I want Caro and Vika SF or Final. Not R16. Way too early.
And I too am worry about the shoulder. She withdrew from Zurich 2008 QF in tears because of the shoulder, didn't play Charleston at all because of it. I would be devastated if it will be like Maria.

I knew there would only be 4 matches on Pietrangeli and that they would put Safina, Venus Williams and Pennetta on center court. That left only one available spot. It was going to be between Ivanovic, Jankovic and Caro/Vika. No luck for us. :(

There's still a glimmer of hope. An Italian channel called SuperTennis or something has been showing some of the matches from court 1 this week. Who knows, they might air Caro vs Vika today. I wonder if Danish TV could have bought the rights from them? Or maybe someone living in Italy might record it? Enough wishful thinking. In the meantime, I'll keep looking for a live stream.

Wow, there were so many breaks of serve, especially in the first set. Vika did not play that well really, her swing volley was not reliable at all, she missed lots of shots, fhs etc. In a way Vika was lucky Kaia's serve was not working (of course neither was Vika's). Once she won the first set, which really could have gone either way (the set started with 8 consecutive breaks, eventually there were 10 breaks in the first set since Vika could not serve out the set at 6-5), and got back on serve in the second (Kaia was up 3-2 serving), the pressure of being close to losing the match was always going to be tough to handle for Kaia. One thing I realise now is that Vika is very much a groundstroker under pressure, the serve is only an extra thing that sometimes works, sometimes not. Volleying or swing volleying (which was part of Antonio's strategy to counter Kaia's moonball defence) also seems to be uncomfortable for Vika under pressure, although she normally does a much better job than she did today with that shot. Nevertheless she is more complete than most wta players, for sure.

But given how well Sveta has been playing, (and the way she handled Jelena today) Vika will probably have to play much, much better to have a chance to defeat her. Sveta's fh has being scary recently.

I don't think Vika's serve was that much of a problem today. Usually I am the first to attack it, but I actually liked what I saw today (serve-wise). Kanepi just returned well many times, and Vika's foorwork right after her serve was not present. Also Vika hit a lot of UEs she shouldn't. For me, it was her groundstrokes that were below average today, and then her footwork. And those things affected her mentally. She was very negative today.

But I agree, she has to play much, much better to beat Kuznetsova who is on fire.

I watched it on the cctv stream http://sports.cctv.com/live/04/index.shtml (use IE, and install and run what it asks for, it is good quality but a few points behind the livescore), but there are probably other streams around. There was also a Super Tennis one that I watched Anna C's match on, http://free-tv.dk/tennis.html. That was okay but buffered a bit for me. And often there is a justin tv one, a bit poorer in quality and you kind of have to figure out the address each day since it could change.

The Kanepi match was pretty awful. :help:

The first set in particular was truly exasperating. :banghead: No wonder Vika was in a bitchy mood.

Kaia's moonballs, while not exactly pleasing to the eye, certainly proved effective. But thankfully for Vika, this tactic was undone by some very poor serving.

I don't know what to think of Vika's performance on clay so far this year. She's had surprisingly easy wins over Wozniacki and Suarez Navarro, which i didn't see since they apparently weren't broadcast anywhere, and yet she has struggled mightily in the two matches I did watch (against Dulko in Stuttgart and now Kanepi). She still doesn't seem to be all that comfortable with her movement.

Vika was not satisfied with her performance, and rightfully so:

Despite making it through to the semi-finals with a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over No16 seed Kaia Kanepi, Victoria Azarenka delivered a harsh critique of her own play after a match which featured 13 breaks of serve in 19 games.

“I don't know really what was really going on with the serve,” said the Belarus No6 seed. “I was playing a little bit better on my return and she was playing a little bit more consistent, but there were just too many mistakes from my side and from her side on her serve. It's very unusual to have that, but that's what happens. I was surprised, because the last time I played her it was completely different game, but we were also playing indoors on the hard court.”

“I wasn't really patient with myself at all. I was trying to do so many things in one point that I just didn't know how to exactly do it. It was a pretty bad performance from me today,” said Azarenka, who will face Svetlana Kuznetsova in Friday’s opening semi-final. “It was a little bit tough with the wind, but you cannot blame that. I'm just happy that I managed to go through a bad day of tennis not being very patient with myself. I'm just happy to go through that.”

Source (http://www.internazionalibnlditalia.it/1/PopNews.asp?LNG=EN&IDNews=509)

Kuznetsova has been quite impressive lately and that title in Stuttgart has obviously done wonders for her confidence, so it's hard to be optimistic about the outcome. But who knows?

Once again, Vika's temper got in the way.

In the first set, Sveta was really solid and Vika just couldn't win the crucial points. No real shame in losing that one though. Sveta's movement on clay is much more fluid, but Vika is still young and will hopefully learn to handle the surface better with time.

In the second set, Vika took the lead, and yet completely lost her mind because of one bad call. The video replay showed the ball was clearly out and the umpire looked at the wrong mark, but Vika let that one incident affect her WAY too much. She pretty much self-destructed after that (and turned the crowd against her).

I hope that by discussing the match with Antonio, she'll come to realize that you can't give up on a match because of one bad call.

She clearly still had a grudge against the umpire at the end, refusing to shake her hand. Not the most mature attitude. :o

Yeah good tournament, especially the 2&2 over Caro. But I thought we were done losing higher tier semi-finals like this.

2008 Berlin SF lost to Safina 6-4 6-1
2008 Canadian SF lost to Safina 6-0 2-6 6-3
2008 Stuttgart SF lost to Petrova 6-4 6-4
2009 Indian Wells SF lost to Zvonareva 6-3 6-3
2009 Miami SF def. Kuznetsova 6-3 2-6 7-5
2009 Rome SF lost to Kuznetsova 6-2 6-4

I at least thought after Miami Vika would play better in these bigger matches. I don't mind that she lost today (Kuznetsova is a favourite on clay), but just how one-sided the score was and how bad she played in the QF and this match. Still alot to improve on, but overall a good week.

To be fair, Dulko is still a dangerous clay-courter, and Kanepi was an RG quarterfinalist last year. So one would expect trouble against them on clay. And Kuznetsova is one of the best clay-courters out there when her head is on straight.

VA has had a good clay season so far, all told.

Well, the first set score is somewhat misleading. Vika lost two very close games which made a huge difference: she got broken early on despite saving a bunch of BPs, and failed to break Sveta later on although she had a 15-40 lead. I thought she played better than in the first set against Kanepi, but Sveta was feeding her a lot more pace compared to Kanepi's junk balls, and unsurprisingly Vika found it a lot easier to find some kind of rhythm against someone like Sveta (even though Sveta's hitting patterns caught her wrong-footed on more than one occasion).

The second set was a completely different story. Sveta's performance became more inconsistent, but Vika completely self-destructed after that poor line call went against her. Sometimes anger can make people play better when channeled properly, but in Vika's case it produced a lasting lapse in concentration on the ROS and a lot of really bad UEs during rallies.

The mental aspect of the game is the thing that most needs improving at the moment, IMO.

I don't think we have seen Vika so immature in a long time. Some people in GM bitched about her behaviour in Brisbane but I think this was far worse. Both in the Kanepi match and in the Kuznetsova match. She went on court negative and kept that attitude. Whoever said that the mental aspect is where she needs to improve the most, I agree 100 percent. She really needs to learn to forget about bad calls and missed opportunities. She gave the 2nd set away. She might have lost in straight sets even if she was positive and all, but we'll never know. Antonio has a tough job now. I really hope this attitude was a one-tournament thing. I prefer the Vika from Miami or the Indian Wells QF.

I dont understand why in one match she dont worries and in another match she couldnot cope with her nerves confused: What she said about her game: I lost that game, and then I lost the set. That's what happened,” was her original terse yet diplomatic reply, but when pressed, she went into more detail. “When you don't play your best and then you finally have a chance, you're up a break and you have another chance to break again and the umpire comes and just shows you a spot where there is no mark, nothing at all, and tells you that this is the mark, I think that's a pretty bad call. I was already playing much better and this thing happens, and it takes me right from where I started.”

“Based on this tournament, I just played one good match, but I'm happy I went to the semi-finals here. It's a pretty big tournament. I hope I can be better at the French Open,” said the Belarus No8 seed, who with three tournament wins to her name already this season will be one of the favourites at Roland Garros. I hope to see in Madrid, RG confidence game without mistakes. I know she can do it! :hearts:

I was already playing much better and this thing happens, and it takes me right from where I started.”
Her first comment is interesting. If one reads between the lines, it basically means that she didn't feel like competing anymore after losing that game, even though she was still up a break in the set. But a professional athlete should never give up because of one incident that goes against her. Also, the bad line call didn't come on one of Vika's own shots (it was a Kuznetsova shot that was hit wide but called good), so I don't really understand why Vika felt that it dragged down the level of her game.

Here's what Kuznetsova had to say about it:

“It was just one ball, and it was even advantage to me. Even if it was not (in) or whatever, she got frustrated and then she started to hit every ball even more. She got too upset for no reason. It was just one ball in the match.”
Sveta is right, of course. That bad call didn't give her a match point, a set point or even the game. The outcome of the match didn't hinge on it at all, yet Vika felt like it did.

I hope Vika and Antonio took some time to review the match on video, so that she could see what was wrong with her mindset. There is certainly a lesson to be learned here. But emotions are, by their very nature, irrational, and we all know how emotional she can be (for good and bad). Trying to help a player develop a better attitude when things are not going her way is not as straightforward as working on the technical aspects of her game.

Anyway, enough ranting from me about this match. :) It will be interesting to see how she plays this week. Peng will be her first opponent, then Szavay.

I knew that leg strapping was bad news as soon as I saw it (in the photos from her previous singles match).

I could only follow this match on the scoreboard (stupid TennisTV didn't show it - apparently ES did, since many people were able to see some of it), but as the match went on Vika seemed to fade and it became obvious to me that she was hampered more and more by that damn injury. I also guessed that the mini-comeback at the end was due to Agnes choking more than anything else (apparently, I was right).

It's the left knee. I don't recall if it's the one she had surgery on last year, but she did retire from Rome and Eastbourne because of her left knee in 2008.

Doubles Draw

[6] Llagostera-Vives / Martinez-Sanchez
Pavlyuchenkova / Schiavone
Benesova / Strycova
Bammer / Husarova
Mayr / Yakimova
Bremond / Coin
Cohen-Aloro / Cornet
[12] Azarenka / Vesnina

I wonder if she will defend her mixed? That's a good draw to the 3R where they could meet the 6th seeds who have been one of the hottest teams this year. Good luck Vika/Lena ;)

This draw is getting more and more unfortunate. The draw as a whole is crumbling, except for Vika's section. Carla looked strong, Ana looked resurgent, and Dinara won 6-0, 6-0 against a top 50 player. Vika looked great too, but in other sections of the draw she would absolutely crush anyone in her path.

You can do it though, Vika! Hopefully Carla crashes out and Ana and Dinara start stumbling.

^^ I know what you mean. Argh if only she could have had Vera's place, we could almost put her in the semis :sobbing:

I still like her chances in this section though. There are tough matches but no reason why she can't beat Ivanovic. Safina was amazing today but the QF's are a much different stage. Both Ana and Dinara have alot to defend, Vika has no pressure at all.

I really think this could be her breakthrough slam

Haha, I'm getting carried away. I'm just really anxious that one of my faves goes far since they play so early.

Victoria is not defending her mixed title, as expected. 2 events is more than enough.

she should play mixed at wimbledon though. It would be cool if she could get a career slam in mixed. She already has 2, so at 19, she is half-way. Not bad
