That is okay. I don't want her to be tired :) Yea, she is not playing Dubai so it will probably be Memphis.

She is playing the same tournaments as Caroline but they are also good friends :p

Unless there is a late WC for a higher ranked player, Wozniacki and Azarenka will be the top two seeds in Memphis.

Vika into semis in Memphis

Vika is closing in on top 10
win this tourn she's gonna be a little bit behind Radwanska who has big IW pts to come off too (but she plays in Monterrey to get pts)

its only a matter of time before she gets there, its when.

what does she have to most likely do to get a top 8 seeding for the french open?

Christinawww
Feb 28th, 2009, 08:08 PM
The current number 8 is Kuznetsova, and she has 5381 points, Vika has 3406. So she is almost 2000 points behind. Without doing the match, I would say it is close to impossible. But let me check how many points they each have to defend from now and till then.

-okay, I've done some calculating. A bit difficult because I don't know which players play where before French Open - but this is what I did:

-removed all points from now and until the French Open seeding date
-added mandatory events Indian Wells, Miami, and Madrid as zero-pointers so far
-for the players with top10 status, added Rome as a zero-pointer
-added up the remaining points. So it's 7 mandatory events (French Open 2008, Wimbledon 2008, Us Open 2008, Aus Open 2009, Indian Wells 2009, Miami 2009, and Madrid 2009), only 4 have been played so far. And then 9 others. And for the top 10: the 7 mandatory, the 2 Premier 5, and then 7 others.
Standing:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/ChristinaWWW/2009FrenchOpenSeedingWeek9.jpg

so 1100 points behind number 8, but Vika has more points to defend than the players around her, well except for clay-court princess Cornet. Some good runs will give her a ranking inside top12 I am sure. But top8 is very difficult.

btw, the players highlighted in purple are the ones with top10 status

Thanks for the great and thorough explanation Christinawww

I don't like taking joy in other player's defeats and injuries, but seen from Vika's point of view, Radwanska losing in Monterrey is a good thing. Vika's chance of getting above Radwanska has really increased now. On Monday, Radwanska will still only have 3448 points, and Vika 3406. But Radwanska has QF=230 points to defend, and Vika nothing at Indian Wells. Aga is sick and has been so all year almost, so it is very unlikely she reaches the QF, even though she'll be seeded to do so. And Vika will be seeded 8, so is also seeded to reach QF. So if Vika just performs as she is supposed to (or better  ) she will be top10 after Indian Wells. However, it will still be hard for her to maintain the position during the clay court season (as explained in my previous post).

not only she has 230 pts to defend
gap will increase by a bit more in favour of Vika cos IW is Mandatory.

Go Vika!

Christinawww
Mar 9th, 2009, 10:51 PM
I like the draw.
R64: Kudryavtseva has done nothing this year so far. Even lost to Vaidisova.
R32: Cirstea is 0-4 this year, and Vika had no trouble with her last year on clay and grass. Maybe she won't even make it past the winner of Lisicki and Vesnina, who both have had good 2009s. But Vika has just beaten Lisicki and to me, Lisicki is not so consistant.
R16: Probably Bartoli who has had a great 2009. Final in Brisbane, QF at Aus Open, won Monterrey - BUT Vika still beat her 3 and 1. I saw the Monterrey final. Bartoli was also behind the baseline. Won because Na Li made so many UEs.
QF: Safina. Vika is 0-3 with Safina, but IMO Safina hasn't been playing great this year. Sure she got to the final of the Aus Open, so she must be doing something right, but I just don't think she is playing well.

I think this is a good chance for Vika to really build on the form she has started the year with, and get herself inside the top10.

From official site:

After sneaking in a morning workout, Victoria Azarenka sits in front of the mirror, her third wardrobe change complete and a second layer of makeup applied. Then as she poses for the photographer, a fan blows her blonde hair past her broad shoulders. Noticeably giddy, she skips behind the camera to see the captured images.

“When they’re young, they love doing photo shoots,” whispers Azarenka’s agent, John Tobias, as he thumbs away at his BlackBerry.

The 19-year-old Azarenka - a Belarusian tennis transplant living in Paradise Valley - has other reasons to be giddy. She won her first two singles titles in the last two months. She will be back on the court this week at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif.

“Out of all the clients we represent, including Andy Roddick, including Justine Henin . . . I believe that Victoria Azarenka has the most upside,” Tobias, 31, says. “Now it’s one thing to have potential, and it’s another to see it through.”

Azarenka was born in Minsk, Belarus, which splits Poland and Russia on the world map and broke from the Soviet Union in 1991. While her mom worked at a local tennis center, Azarenka picked up a racket at age 7. A coach passing by asked her to join his group lesson.

“I said ‘no, no. I’m scared,’ because I always walked behind by mom,” Azarenka says.

When she was ready to walk on her own, she ran - right to the tennis court. Azarenka spent as many as 10 hours a day there and, on one particular day, hit 1,460 shots in a row. She counted.

The girl who was once afraid to leave her mother’s side moved to Spain at age 15. Then at 16, with the sponsorship of Nikolai Khabibulin and his wife, Victoria, she moved to the U.S. The Khabibulins are her connection to the Valley. She still lives with them and receives wide-ranging advice from Nikolai, a 13-year NHL goaltender from Belarus who played three seasons with the Phoenix Coyotes. The pair will chat about everything from the young men in Azarenka’s life to the food in her diet.

“I can always talk to him about anything,” she says. “He’s been through all these things.”

Azarenka, known as Vika to her friends and family, captured her first singles title Jan. 10 at the Brisbane International. About two weeks later she retired in her fourth-round Australian Open match due to illness, especially disappointing because she held a one-set advantage against now top-ranked Serena Williams.

“There are so many more great Australian Opens out there for her,” Williams told reporters post-match.

Azarenka rebounded in mid-February, winning her second singles title at the Cellular South Cup against her friend and fellow Tobias client, Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki. She’s up to No. 11 in the women’s world rankings, 12 spots ahead of Maria Sharapova. Likely two to three years from her prime, she is shy about reaching for No. 1, but asks, “If you don’t have that goal, what is the point to play?”

Azarenka already has surpassed $1.5 million in Tour earnings and has a Nike deal to boot.

“Sometimes I don’t feel like I’m 19. The years go by like two,” she says in English with a thin accent.

But she’s not growing up too fast to enjoy the journey. She has a Facebook page and her own Web site, admits to being a recovering shopaholic and loves to drive her Mercedes.

“On the court I’m a fighter. I will do anything to win,” she says. “Outside, I’m actually very, very nice.”

Vika Blog, 13/3-2009:

Hello Everybody!

Hope everyone is having a good time following the BNP Paribas Open here in Indian Wells.

I’ve had a great start in 2009 after winning in Brisbane and Memphis earlier this year and my match record is 13-1. I’m really hoping I can continue my high level of play coming into this tournament. I actually took two weeks off the tour before coming here, so I feel very rested and ready to go.

If you didn’t already know, I’ve been living in Scottsdale, Ariz. for the last three years with the family of professional hockey player Nikolai Khabibulin.

Nikolai is an NHL goaltender, who used to play for the Phoenix Coyotes, but now plays for the Chicago Blackhawks. His wife is a friend of my mother and they invited me to come live with them here in the United States.

While most players have to take a flight to get to Indian Wells, I am fortunate to live close enough to drive. The trip here through the desert took about three-and-a-half hours from Scottsdale. One thing is for sure, you sure get to see a lot of cactus on the drive on Interstate 10 between Arizona and California.

The playing conditions in Indian Wells and Scottsdale are pretty similar considering they are both located in the desert. When I’m hitting on court here, the ball seems to be just a bit slower, probably since we’re pretty much at sea level.

Where I train in Arizona, it’s a little bit higher in altitude, so the ball feels like it moves just a little bit quicker. Other than that, there is really not much difference.

This is the third year I’m playing at the tournament in Indian Wells. In 2006 I lost in the second round of qualifying and the following year I got to the main draw as a qualifier. I won two matches to get to the third round that year where I lost to Vera Zvonareva in straight sets.

I didn’t get to play here last year because I was recovering from surgery on my left knee. This year I’m so happy that I didn’t have to go through qualifying and got directly into the main draw as the eighth seed. Coming into this tournament, there is really no pressure since I don’t have any ranking points to defend.

Since I’m seeded, I got a first-round bye and I play qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova in my first match. Sometimes it can be tough to play a qualifier in the early rounds because they’ve already played a few matches and have gotten used to the conditions.

I’ve only played her once before. It was two years ago at Hobart in a qualifying match. I remember winning the match in a third-set tiebreaker.

It’s been a little while since I’ve played a match, so I’m anxious to get back on the court and play.

Well, I’m off to the practice courts. That’s all for now, but check back soon for another update.

Victoria

you can follow the projected rankings here:
http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=8073837&postcount=1

as you can see, A. Radwanska has points from last year to defend, so Vika is in good position to reach the top10. As long as she Vika gets to the same round or better than Radwanska, she will be ranked above Aga the next time the ranking comes out (next monday).
Caro is 200 points behind Vika, so she too needs to perform better than Vika to push Vika away from the top10. If Vika loses R16, Caro needs a SF. If Vika loses in QF, Caro needs final.

So it looks good.

I don't agree. Radwanska hasn't been playing well at all this year. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Wozniak wins tonight. Though I agree that her section of the draw lacks established top players, but on the other hand, Kleybanova and Pavlyuchenkova are dangerous up and comers, more than capable of doing damage if Wozniak doesn't succeed in doing it

Just noticed Vika posted another blog entry on the IW website yesterday:

March 15, 2009 - Victoria Azarenka

Hello again everyone.

Itís been a fun tournament so far in Indian Wells and I hope youíve been following the matches.

I had quite a time in my first match. I got off to a little bit of a slow start against Yaroslava Shvedova. In my first blog I wrote about how it can be tough sometimes to play a qualifier because theyíve already played a few matches and have gotten used to the conditions.

Thatís exactly what happened. She was playing pretty well, but fortunately I was able to find my rhythm and cut down on my errors. After losing the first set, I came back to win in three close sets.

Iíll be playing Elena Vesnina in my next match, which is scheduled for Sunday on Stadium 3. Sheís also a tough player and we should have a good match. I beat her in straight sets the only time weíve played, but that was two years ago. I look forward to playing her again.

After spending a few days here in Indian Wells I remembered how laid back and relaxed it is here. It feels really good. Since the first time I played here a few years ago, I felt the way of life was slower here than in other places, which is a good change of pace compared to some of the big cities Iíve played in while playing on the tour.

One of the best things I really enjoy about Indian Wells is that everything is so close by to the tennis stadium, which makes it easy to get around. You donít know how much difference that makes when youíre playing a tournament. With the hotel, stores and restaurants all located close together and near the tournament site, believe me, it makes everything much better.

During one of my press interviews earlier this week, I was asked what makes a good tournament and I had to think about this tournament because of how organized it is. The people who put on this tournament really do an excellent job because of the way everything is run.

Obviously, fans and sponsors are very important for a tournament to succeed, but the players really like it when a tournament takes care of them while theyíre in the tournament and thatís exactly what they do in Indian Wells. The player services here are always good and the players really appreciate it.

There is one other thing I wanted to write about before I sign off. I was born and raised in Belarus, but Iíve lived in the United States for the last few years. I am always amazed how passionate and knowledgeable sports fans are in this county.

Here in Indian Wells, so many fans attend this tournament. I think this is the biggest tournament after the four Grand Slam tournaments. The one thing I can say for sure about the fans, who come to Indian Wells, is that they really know their tennis.

But it just isnít tennis where the fans get passionate. Iíve noticed it in other sports here in the United States like baseball, basketball, hockey and football.

Well, itís time to go to dinner. Enjoy the tennis until next time.

Victoria

Yes, i begin to be a little frightened by Radwanska...
Radwanska is really very lucky this week... :fiery:
She doesn't play very well, but all the seeds lost in her draw...
Now she can reach the semi without problem...

March 17, 2009 - Victoria Azarenka

Good Morning everybody!
I got up early this morning to start preparing for my singles match against Shahar Peer. If youíre at the tournament, I hope youíll come and watch.

It was a very good day yesterday on Monday. I played my second round doubles match with Vera (Zvonareva) in the afternoon.

I knew it was going to be a tough match because we were playing Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs, who were seeded fourth. They are a very tough team. They are both strong players and they move well and hit very good volleys.

We broke Samantha in the first game even though she hit two aces. I lost my serve in the next game, but we started to play better and Vera and I began hitting our service returns well. We won the first set 6-2.

In the second set, Vera lost her serve early in the set, but when Samantha served for the set at 5-3, I thought were going to break to get back on serve because we went up 40-0. We couldnít hold the lead and they ended up holding serve to win the set.

A few years ago the WTA changed the format of the doubles and we play a match tie-break instead of a third set. I guess they did it to make it more exciting for the fans, but sometimes it makes the players nervous having to play a match tie-break.

Vera and I won the first five points of our match tie-break, but Samantha and Rennae kept fighting and they came back. I started to get a little bit nervous because we were only winning 6-4. We won the next three points to give to match point at 9-4.

These match tie-breaks are never easy. Samantha and Rennae won the next three points and the score was 9-7 when we finally put the match away. I was so glad when it was over and I was happy we won.

I really enjoy playing doubles because it helps my singles game so much. Whenever I play doubles, I get good practice on my volleys and especially my footwork. I donít think people give doubles the credit it deserves. Since my days as a junior player, itís helped me to get used to the conditions at tournaments and itís really helped my confidence over the years.

Since Iím talking about doubles today, I wanted to mention two of the players on the menís tour that helped me a lot.

Two years ago, I won the US Open Mixed Doubles championship with Max Mirnyi, who is also from Belarus and last year Bob Bryan and I won the Mixed Doubles Championship at Roland Garros.

Both Max and Bob are great doubles players and they taught me so much during those tournaments. They both gave me tips and helped me with my game. Max, who Iíve known for a long time, has especially helped me. He asked me to play mixed doubles with him even though I had no ranking.

He was really good because he would pump me up when we were down during our matches and he just gave me so much confidence.

Well, I have to get going because itís time to eat breakfast.

Have a wonderful day.
Victoria

Eurosport sucks :fiery: because they have exclusive rights for the WTA tournaments in Europe !
So we can't pay to watch the live stream on tvtennis.com !
It's a shame, because eurosport have exclusive rights, but they don't show the tournaments...

I contacted www.tvtennis.com, and if we can't suscribe to this website, it's only because eurosport !:mad:
I think we could break the eurosport exclusive right in Europe, if we were a lot to protest !

Christinawww
Mar 21st, 2009, 10:36 AM
overall, great tournament for Vika yes. She was seeded to reach QF, but reached SF because she finally defeated Safina, the number 2 ranked player in the world. Vika's best win in terms of ranking.
It just sucks that she lost to Vera in two easy sets and playing so poorly while losing. She really had a chance had she played better, since Vera didn't play well either, though better than she had against Wozniacki.
So once the initial disappointment disappears, I am very satisfied with her performance in this tournament

Still alive in doubles though. Playing the final later today.

well no easy matches. I would say Pavlyuchenkova is by far the toughest unseeded player, and Vika is to face her in her first match. Hopefully Vika will be ready and focused. IMO Vika is the better player, but Pavlyuchenkova is more than capable of taking advantage of top-players having bad days.

Good luck Vika. Really a good chance to prove yourself even more now.

The only thing that comforts me is that in Indian Wells, Pavlyuchenkova beat
Domachowska - no biggie
Jankovic - top3, but really hasn't played like top10 this year, so on paper, it looks like a bigger scalp than it really is
Knapp - no biggie
Llagostera Vives - no biggie
Radwanska - hasn't played well this year either
and then lost convincingly to Ivanovic who isn't playing that well either.

I'm more scared of Pavlyuchenkova than Ana. In the fourth round she could potentially draw Ana, Venus, Vera, and Kuznetsova. So I think Ana is the best draw for her. She is 0-4 against Vera. One of those matches being last week. Only 0-1 against Venus, a 36 26 loss at the Olympics, but given Venus has just won two tournaments and is playing in her own back yard, I am glad she isn't near Vika. She's 0-3 against Kuznetsova. Closest encounter being here last year where Vika held match ball before losing - and being bageled. The two other loses were in straight sets, the most recent was at the French Open 26 26.
As far as I remember, she hasn't met Ana, so it is the unknown factor.

Best In Bed By Tennis Week
Thursday, March 19, 2009

Several tennis stars — Andy Roddick, Mike and Bob Bryan, Mardy Fish, Sam Querrey, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva — will spend Tuesday night in Bed in South Beach.

No, it's not a tennis star slumber party, but a Bed-In to celebrate the Sony Ericsson Open.

On Tuesday, March 24th BEST (Blue Entertainment Sports Television) Tennis will co-host a kick-off party with Ocean Drive magazine to celebrate the 2009 Sony Ericsson Open, which begins on March 25. The exclusive event is invitation-only, and will be held at B.E.D. night club on South Beach from 7 to 10 p.m.

Many more players are scheduled to attend. Located on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, BEST Tennis currently represents over 20 percent of the top 100 players on both the men’s and women’s tour.

"On behalf of our clients, I am excited to be partnering with the prestigious Ocean Drive magazine and B.E.D. night club for our kick-off party celebrating the Sony Ericsson Open — my favorite tournament of the year, held in my favorite city," said Ken Meyerson, BEST Tennis President and Andy Roddick’s agent.

B.E.D. Miami is located at 929 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL. B.E.D. Miami has attracted South Beach’s crème de la crème as well as leading celebrities including Paris Hilton, Simon Rex, Shaquille O’Neal, Jamie Foxx, Wilmer Valderrama, Lennox Lewis, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Will Smith, Johnny Knoxville and Gwen Stefani. The restaurant is open for dinner from 8:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

I'm not so worried about this match. Chaky has beaten 1!!! top50 player since October. That sole win was Daniela last night, which doesn't really say a lot given Daniela herself hasn't beaten a top50 player this year. That match was a battle of the slumps. As somebody said on my Daniela forum:
if any two players could find a way to play each other and both lose, it would be Daniela and Anna

So I would be very surprised if Vika loses to Anna.

Loved it, that was great to see. She could have dropped off after a very dodgy second set but didn't let her head drop and kept her spirit. She was obviously very worked up and emotional, I hope she goes on to beat whoever she plays in the final, but if not - well, just getting there sends a message to every other player.

It`s tough to close out an old champion
like Williams who has been in and won so many big matches. A tall order indeed but the old will be replaced with the new and Vika is one of those champions of the future. I would not be surprised if she comes through Sunday, but if not, it will be soon...

article:
http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/tennis/story/983520.html

and fellow Vika fans. Don't be too disappointed if Vika loses tonight. She has still had an amazing week. Serena is difficult to beat, esp. in Miami. She has won it 5 times, and lives in the area. Serena can be scary good when she wants to, e.g. the Australian Open Final.
Further, somebody (maybe Dave) pointed out in GM that Vika is rather slow. By this I mean, it took her 5 tries to win a final, she lost 4 big SF's before she finally won one.

Dave.
Apr 4th, 2009, 11:57 AM
I just want her to play well and not get wiped off the court. In a way, this match has more pressure than the AO one. At the AO, Vika was just Serena's seeded opponent for that round and expected to lose, but she surprised us all and took a set. Here, it's a final, the biggest match of the 2 weeks. Vika has actually been playing better than Serena so there's more expectation, and Serena will be prepared for Vika this time. So it will definetely be tougher, but at least she is healthy this time. :p

the expression on her face when she won says it all. So happy. And yes so shaky in the interview. Who can blame her. Hopefully she'll get better with time.

This is a fantastic victory, beating Serena in Miami, beating the world number 1, and with such ease. She didn't seem much nervous, except for that last DF, but she played her game, went for her shots which was great to see. Didn't go to the net as much as she usually does, and she hit a terrible UEs at one point, maybe that was a sign of nerves.
Hopefully she can keep the form going all year. As we have seen with most other WTA players, form is really an issue.

There's a language on my language tree called Belarusian or something like that. It is right next to Russian. I am sure she speaks Russian. Not sure how big the difference between Belarusian and Russian is, but I guess the two Belarusian posters here can tell us.

I would say she is okay. She reached Berlin SF last year, has been to the 4th round of French Open, reached Tier IV final on clay in 2007, reach tier IV final on clay in 2008, so I am not so worried.
Based on her style of play, nothing either frightens me. She doesn't rely solely on power which is neutralized on clay. She's a decent mover, and as far as I have heard, she likes higher bouncing balls which clay produces.
I would guess grass is her weakest surface, as the balls are low and fast

Svetlana.
Apr 5th, 2009, 01:49 PM

Is Vika Russian or Belarusian? I think in Belarus many may speak Russian, but as you may know in some other post Soviet republics people less and less interested in learning a Russian language. The older generation knows it, but the youngest prefers learning English.

When I was @ FedCup, she and the whole team communicated in perfect Russian

good to know...

Dave.
Apr 5th, 2009, 02:04 PM
Vika has reached a clay final in the last two European red clay seasons, and I don't think this year will be any different, although it will be tougher because she's only playing the big tourneys.

Hopefully she will make the Quarters of the French or Wimbledon.

I agree Christinawww that grass is probably her weakest surface, but from what I saw of her at Wimbledon last year, she didn't have too many problems with it. The grass at Wimbledon is just like a hard court, the balls still bounce into her comfort zone between shoulder/waist level. It's a bit faster but there's still enough time to prepare. I don't think there is any reason why she should not do well on grass. If she serves well and is aggressive enough, she will be difficult to beat.

I do know 'cause I'm from Estonia  Here, there's a layer of people who can't say a word in Russian (esp. those who are 25-35 atm) but younger generation is learning Russian intensively again.
Anyway, here's what I found on wikipedia... apparently, Russian is widely used there.
Belarus's two official languages are Belarusian and Russian, spoken at home by 36.7% and 62.8% of Belarusians, respectively.

Watch Vika lose 1R in Charleston and see the reaction in GM, you can gurantee she'd lose most of her new "fans" :o

and the Sharapova comparison is old now. I've replied to loads of those threads but I'm so bored of it now. I don't know why everyone is so keen to see the "new Sharapova" when the original one isn't even retired. I don't see the similarity in their games, the only thing they have in common is their grunts and even those are different.
