View Full Version : What's with all the micro-analyzation of The Williams?

The "Why don't Venus and Serena kiss their opponents?" thread made me realize just how much scrutiny they are under for everything they say or do.

When in the history of women's tennis have post-match interviews and post-match net behavior been so analyzed? Why didn't Venus/ Serena kiss her opponent? Why didn't she smile? Why didn't her handshake last longer?

People literally comb through Venus and Serena interviews looking for evidence of arrogance or ungraciousness with every single remark. Why didn't she credit her opponent? Oh wait, she did credit her opponent? But why did she have to add that she played badly? Blah Blah blah.

I can't imagine the pressure Venus and Serena are under to watch what they say. The sisters literally have to watch every single thing that comes out of their mouths.

If you add up all the negative remarks and disses lobbed at the sisters by other players over the years you would have a novel. Meanwhile the Sisters cannot return the insults because they will be severely punished by spectators for the same behaviors that some of their peers engage in with impunity.

It amazes me how Venus and Serena have held their tongues so long while players from all over the world have a free pass to criticise and in many cases insult the sisters for everything from their hair, their clothes, their personalities and their style of play. Despite all that, observers are angry at Venus and Serena because they don't patronize other players with bullshit pleasantries after a match.

Venus and Serena simply don't have the luxury of being critical of their peers. They can't say things like "I don't like ____'s style of play" or "Everyone wanted me to win because they were tired of _____winning all the time,". The Sisters are "rude" or "arrogant" if they don't kiss someone at the net, shake someone's hand long enough, or spend their entire interview patronizing or bending over backwards to kiss the ass of people on the tour who probably despise them.

I wouldn't shock me one bit if they retired early. Why would they want to keep going through this crap?

Yep, that's why they are arrogant. They have the audacity to not respond or give people the satisfaction of bothering them.

Sometimes to have a grievance is to have a purpose in life with some posters at this board when it's regarding anything Venus and Serena Williams.

Shakespeare wrote: what a bitter thing it is to look into happiness through another man's eyes Venus and Serena have never done this and don't do this and therefore they aren't of the same mind as some of their peers on the circuit when it comes to envy, hatred, or whatever seems to be the problem. The Sisters were on Oprah about a year or two back and Oprah commented on how some in the tour almost made it a business of speaking negatively of the Sisters and some in their family and how the Sisters rarely if ever came back with the same venom and oftentimes ignorance. I think the Sisters have a strong sense of self understanding and realize that whether it is petty jealousy, misunderstanding by some of their confidence as opposed to the ever so popular lame claim of arrogance, that they can only be themselves and what others think is what they think and to worry about it, be affected by it and changed somehow would be the worst sort of compromise.

There's no hypocrisy... I've never read or heard something negative about Henin, Kournikova or Navratilova.

Henin and Navratilova is ugly. Martina is quite veiny/unwomanly

I wouldn't shock me one bit if they retired early. Why would they want to keep going through this crap? I appreciate (and agree with) your sentiment but the Williams sisters do not own the monopoly on scrutiny and 'micro-analysation.'

I agree that they shouldn't have to deal with that kind of stuff but then no one should.

I think the bit about them retiring early because of a few childish message board discussions is rather melodramatic though.

Anyway, the majority of ridiculous threads started in the last few days about Williams sisters have been started by just one poster.
