I don't hate her. Her singing is good. She's also quite pretty.
HOWEVER, from something she once wrote on her website, it appears she thinks it is quite terrible for a person to be a lesbian.
Not surprisingly, that doesn't exactly endear her to me.
Feb 28th, 2002, 02:56 AM
um from the rumors i hear out of new york (just rumors) I thought she was a lesbian.
free why do u hate her so much? did she kick your puppy?
Feb 28th, 2002, 02:59 AM
I dont hate her, but she´s really overrated, and I hate having a 19 year old condescend to me about how to live..
Feb 28th, 2002, 03:01 AM
I liked her in the beginning, but ever since than she's been everywhere!
Feb 28th, 2002, 03:03 AM
She is way overrated.Way too much!Gosh, she needs to chill out!NOW!:fiery:
Learn how to spell,KC....
Feb 28th, 2002, 03:05 AM
Imdeed there were rumours. (From her lyrics, though, it is obvious she's heterosexual.)
Anyway, the rumours are why she wrote what she did on her website, denying that she was a lesbian. Of course she could have objected simply because she isn't lesbian. But it certainly appeared that her main objection was that she felt she was being accused of being something awful.
Feb 28th, 2002, 03:10 AM
it's funny usually the people who deny it the most end up being discovered to be gay ala george michael and soon to be outed tom cruise heh. usually the people who are not gay dont care what people say.
Feb 28th, 2002, 04:45 AM
completely agree with Cybelle.
me thinks the lady doth protest too much.
Feb 28th, 2002, 04:51 AM
I always thought she was a bit lesbian myself.. or at least bi. I know the Brat is gay and it seems to me that Alicia Keyes is as well. She kinda reminds me a bit of the Brat. Hey Denise I am gonna have to look up her comments.. also one can have lyrics that portray heterosexuality but be so gay. I mean look at Michael Jackson:D
By the way I like her music and piano playing.. GO ALICIA!!
Feb 28th, 2002, 07:29 AM
I hate her because she is sooooooooo overated. Her CD SUCKS. She can deny it all she wants, she is gay and I hate people who go out of their way to deny it. She talks like a butch dyke and she walks with a bop. She seems to be going out of her way to be girly. SHE SUCKS and way overrated. She did not have the best R&B album. Not better than Mary or Allyah. SHE SUCKS SHE SUCKS. :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:
Feb 28th, 2002, 08:06 AM
I don't like her much. I do agree with you all: she is overrated. She won 5 grammys tonight! FOR WHAT??? I can't stand her first single "falling." They played it on the radio soooo much and I am soo tired of it.
Another overrated singer, is Nelly Fertado. Can't stand her either.
Feb 28th, 2002, 09:04 AM
When Clive Davis set signed her and set her up with that show she did in NY (can't remember the venue), everyone's was just buzzing and I really thought she'd be at least in the Erykah Badu/Jill Scott league.
...but to my ears the album is schmaltzy and formulaic (OK, so this is the same Clive Davis that brought Whitney to our ears, so I can forgive that!).
Obviously she's talented.... but I'm yet to hear anything from her (musically) that makes me think she's special.
Time will tell, but yes at the moment she's overrated. I don't like the album, but I don't hate her.
Feb 28th, 2002, 09:07 AM
Yeah, I don't hate her. Her voice is ok, but as of now her songs just don't do anything for me.
Feb 28th, 2002, 01:15 PM
Dawn Marie, what she wrote was eventually removed without any comment. Still, her website is worth looking at anyway.
Feb 28th, 2002, 02:38 PM
Overrated, yes. She does have a passion about her singing that I appreciate, but all this hype is too much. And all these costume changes last night on the Grammy's?! That is just a little too full of yourself if you ask me. I expect to see her on VH1's "Where Are They Know"...in about 5 years....
Feb 28th, 2002, 03:20 PM
I expect to see her on VH1's "Where Are They Know"...in about 5 years....
Count me in KindaNice.
Talented?? No.. not in my eyes. Below average EVERYTHING. This "neo-soul" shit is so throw away.
Feb 28th, 2002, 04:13 PM
Well then, Grandslammed, you must really like your R&B mediocre.
Naahh... that's why you won't catch me listening to Keys, or Maxwell, or D'Angelo, or Bilal, or Chico, etc., ;)
I happen to have cds by Stone and Arie. They both have a couple of songs I can stomach.
Big Fat Pink Elephant
Feb 28th, 2002, 04:45 PM
lol... I love Alicia's music an everything.. but guys... she's 'just' an artist... why bother to care that much by saying that you hate you here? :)
Gee Man! Angie huh? Hehe.. I love Angie in the Keep Your Worries with GURU!!!! I love Guru! I've seen him performe!! :bounce:
Feb 28th, 2002, 05:09 PM
 at this topic and the hateful responses... Although I am indifferent to her, I'd take over a BritneyIliketoshowmybodyandcannotholdanote Spears any day... Clive Davis hasn't had a #1 artist for a long time, so what if she is over-rated??? At least she sings and is damn good on that piano :P: And who cares about her sexual preference?? It's her damn business. The kid grew up in Harlem and considers herself African America.
What is up with black folk??? They diss their own, and get all upset when others do it:rolleyes:
Feb 28th, 2002, 05:19 PM
Actually neo-soul is some good music Grandslammed. Give it a try.;) Anyways, let's all be honest that Clive Davis is a mastermind. I do agree that Alicia Keys is overrated, but you have to give Clive props for being the hype man. When you sign onto J Records you are guareented constant promotion. Look what he did for Deborah Coxx. Her first album was a loser, and he stuck behind her and she did wonders with the second.
As far as Alicia keys me and my brother have been discussing this over the phone since she first came out. I bought the album and thought that she was overrated, and that Mary, Jill, and others are better. He agreed, but alot of his white friends loves Alicia Keys and he couldn't argue with them. I will be honest and say that "Fallin" was a mesmerizing song, and noone denies that. However, the rest of the album was average. Singer's like Mary, Faith, Jill, and India can knock her out when it comes to vocals.
All in all, I don't hate her at all and noone shouldn't. Barry White complained about the grammy process when he never won one in years. Part of the process, is hype, industry buzz, industry connections. This is something that Clive Davis posesses, and he does his job well by saying things like "Alicia is wise beyond her years" or "she has an old soul". Does any of these quotes come to mind? Yes. They were said about the talent of Lauryn Hill which was truthful, but the same thing can't be applied to Alisha. Alicia Keys is talented, but she can't be compared to the likes of Lauyrn Hill whose artistry and music is amazing.
The sad thing is that India.Irie was shut out competely which I think was unfair and odd. Why in the hell would they nominate a singer 7 times and not grant her one award? I truly feel that her Album was better than Alicia's, but it's just my opinion. I know India was hurting because that's got to feel scandalous. It would of been o.k. if she was nominated 2 or 3 times, but 7 and no wins.
As far as the gay rumors, it's all rumors. I think people really should stop saying this about every star. It's such a shame that sexuality is made out to be a big spectacle in someone's career. I honestly don't think she's a lesbian, but if she is then whatever. None of my business, plain and simple.
Feb 28th, 2002, 05:28 PM
Infiniti, I agree with ya. I like to give my analysis on how I truly feel, but I am proud of her because she represent's African American's in a positive way. But hate her? It's just uncalled for.
Big Fat Pink Elephant
Feb 28th, 2002, 05:28 PM
Infiniti and Harloo, WELL SAID! :)
And btw.. Alicia isn't lesbian.. I was just browsing her site, and read her posts to the fans. #1 I think it's great that she takes time to talk to her fans and she e-mails her fans too!!! she said in one sentence: 'we'll talk soon, gotta go call my man before he thinks I don't love him anymore =) ' Well, unless she's calling her girlfriend a MAN, she's straight. :)
Feb 28th, 2002, 05:40 PM
Where did all this lesbian stuff start??? If it's because of the video , I have to laugh... Did it occur to any of you that the concept for the video came from one of her handlers?? Live and let live already SHEESH!!!!
Feb 28th, 2002, 06:10 PM
I think she's vastly over-rated.
Feb 28th, 2002, 06:14 PM
I don`t know anything about her so I can`t hate or dislike her, I don`t like her song what`s a women`s worth or something like that though, that song doesn`t sound well!
Mar 1st, 2002, 12:28 AM
Blah Blah Blah!!!
Alicia Keyes is so so intelligent, talented and beautiful.
Her album is worthy of a grammy, and i think the music industry know better than you do who deserves them.
Mar 1st, 2002, 01:45 AM
:( :( :( to everyone here for not contributing to my R & B/house etc thread (except Beige and Jessica) j/k;) :)
As for Alicia, Infiniti, I can't agree with you more on all of your posts in this thread...well put! Fallin left me vcold, but I like a Woman's Worth. Haven't decided whther or not to buy the album yet, though Jessica has put a strong recommendation on it.
Grandslammed, everyone is entitled to their own musical taste of course, BUT YOU'RE MISSING OUT! I know you "can stomach" Angie and India (I love both), but what about Erykah Badu, and Jill DScott, and a lot of what is mentioned? These guys create beautiful music.
As for the Grammy's I think they are a joke, and that if it isn't adult contemporary rock, then they have no clue:( . Here are some lulus from the past
Best dance record- Oh ah Just a little bit- Gina G PURLEEZE!:(
Best hip hop record- Who let the dogs out- BAHA Men:( :fiery:
It's an insult to those genres of music, and the people who produces those kinds of music.......
Mar 1st, 2002, 03:54 AM
Infiniti2001, it isn't her sexual preference that bothers me. So what if she's heterosexual? I don't care. What bothers me --- for obvious reasons --- is that she feels it is terrible to be lesbian.
That, though, doesn't stop me from recognizing she is very musically gifted.
Mar 1st, 2002, 12:25 PM
Odd, I haven't come across this argument in the UK - probably cos she isn't so hyped. I really like Alicia - it's not so much the technicalities of her voice as the sheer emotion in it which yes, blows Whitney Houston and Mary J Blige away. There's this innate melancholy in her voice which makes it pretty special. 'Songs In A Minor' isn't a perfect album by any means - c'mon, it is only her debut, and perfect debuts are few and far between - but she is very talented. In the interviews I've seen she comes across as intelligent and thoughtful (albeit wagging the finger a bit too much); I didn't know about the whole lesbian thing. 'Fallin' and 'A Woman's Worth', though - great, great songs.
Mar 1st, 2002, 03:33 PM
While I was taught not to hate anyone, I don't really care for ALicia either. While I like the song "Fallin", its like all other popular records, it's overplayed, but blame the radio programmers not ALicia. As far as the "hype" around ALicia, you can't really blame her, as much as you can blame public demand and her record label, which is just doing it's job in promoting its product and trying to sell records. My simple solution is I just turn the radio or tv station. Her second song "A Womans Worth" makes me claw for the station knob and remote control with blind flurry, I absolutely hate it. Just the song, not the artist.
What I find strange is that I've always thought that Alicia had this lesbian vibe (not that there's anything wrong with that) and it made me chuckle that others think the same thing. I've heard no rumors, don't know her and have never met her, but just get this certain vibe... But as far as those who say she refers to men in her songs and on her webboard, come on... we're adults here, you do and say what it takes to sell records. How accepting would society be if she came right out the box and said she was a lesbian? Not saying that she is, but lets be realistic.
Note to BEIGE: When did the rumors about Keith W. start or is this just common knowledge? I love his first album back in the day... And who are these rappers that you speak of? Just curious to know. Great comments by the way.
Mar 1st, 2002, 03:37 PM
I dont hate her, but I dont really like her...and after her acceptance speeches, it is obvious to me that her vocabulary and speech are terrible! She talks like she is stupid.
Mar 1st, 2002, 03:56 PM
Well - I for one - saw Alicia, India, Gil, Yolanda Adams and two blood sisters - though their names escape me now – on the Oprah show. Sorry bout that. I had tears in my eyes thru out that entire show. I felt so proud for all of my Sisters that were performing. I felt as if I had some stock in them, and that they most likely would be around for years. They each brought their own and unique styles during the show, and they all showcased their loads of talents.
I was impressed and proud of Alicia, because she composed and wrote all of her material. Is it her fault that she has talent number one, and is it her fault she is getting so much play (pre and post) the awards shows? Show business folks have been requesting this or that from her thru her agent. They want her to appear on their shows and the like. Her people may be promoting her in a way where she is getting press, but for the most part, the PTB in the entertainment industry are marketing and advertising for her for their own reasons. If they did not want her to have two performances at the Grammys, she would not have performed twice, nor won she have won five awards. What should she do - give the awards back?
So what should she or anyone do if one truly believes in one’s self? Give it all up? Let her make her fortune - and let her grow as a human being - and then see how she gives back. She just showed up on the scene, and now she is supposed to back up? Why don't and didn't all the other stars and star wannabes - in the entertainment industry - back up? Now take the show "Friends", for instance, the stars of that show are now demanding $1M an episode. Should they back up? Let Alicia make hers - because she seems to be doing nothing except excelling when it is her time to excel. She is being blessed. And if one hates her - then they don't have to like her or buy her records.
They don't have to like her style. They can feel whatever they want to feel about Alicia - and it will not reach her ears. She could care less. She understands fully that not all human beings - the whole world round have the same exact set/pair of ears. She already knows that - cause she knows what she has an ear for - and it appears that many people in the industry and out - hear her too. She knows everyone will not like her music. She knows it cause she knows she is different. And that people have different tastes. And because people hear and feel things differently - then she should back up - and stop being her? Fiddlesticks!
I mean - that is too much to ask of her - IMO. And whether I like her music or not - I am proud of my girl - and I wish her well on her journey. Hopefully, she'll stick close to home (NY) and not get all caught up out there in holly-weird. From what I understand - she has a deep faith - so she knows where her blessings are coming from.
"CONGRATULATIONS ALICIA" "KEEP THE FAITH"
Mar 1st, 2002, 04:14 PM
I don't hate Alicia Keys, I just don't like her songs much. I didn't get to watch the Grammy's, but my friend told me Alicia Keys took home several awards including Best New Artist? I think that title belongs to Linkin Park!! Did they even get a grammy? I heard U2 also got a few awards. Anyways I wish there was a limit on how many they can win.
Mar 1st, 2002, 04:15 PM
Couldn't have said it any better myself gogogirl... What the hell is lesbian vibe??? :fiery:
Mar 1st, 2002, 04:24 PM
I think she is truly talented both vocally and through song writing. I mean she is a young lady and its clear she is gifted, she has raw emotion in her voice and its evident that she is talented and i don't understand how anyone can say otherwise even if you do dislike her personally or muscially. As for the rumors of her being a lesbian.. who really cares? There is nothing wrong with that...
... and about her "looking stupid with her vocab range" after she won a grammy i don't think you can judge her on that, she won a grammy the biggest award an artist can recieve, and she may of have been caught up in the moment.. i mean look back to christina's acceptance speech she sounded like a fool, was stuttering, crying, shaking, and what have u and that is because she was excited so i don't think someone should be judged upon their acceptance speech for an award..
.. also i listen to every style of music there is and i dig most (if not all) of the other artists mentioned in this thread.. and i would also recommend her album if you like music along the lines of old mariah carey, nelly furtado, and even a hint of areatha seems present in certain songs...
Mar 1st, 2002, 04:36 PM
It's funny (again) that you mentioned some of those guys, because of recent conversations. Somewhat suprised by the Keith W. fact, but not really, as nothing really suprises me much these days. I have a good friend (through a good friend) who knows whats up and has confirmed Kenny, LL CJ, Alfonzo Robierso, Maxwell, Scottie Pippen, and Tavis Smiley to his team. But I was really shocked to see Kenny L. marry Chante, whats that all about?
Mar 1st, 2002, 04:36 PM
She is a very talented beautiful woman and at first her album didn't impress me then it grew on me and I fell in love with many of the songs...some I can't stand and have to skip, but all in all she has some really touching lyrics and a powerful voice!
...but when she opens her mouth, i.e acceptance speeches, I get disgusted with her. SHe doesn't have to talk like that! She can have an edge to her voice but she really lays it on thick...too fake. It is insulting to see her act like a ghetto princess when she is quite the contrary...I hope she grows up and works on her schtick!
They could have given some of her awards to India. Arie!!!:fiery:
Mar 1st, 2002, 04:50 PM
If I could give Alicia one piece of advice it would be to "keep keepin on". Fluck the critics cause they a dime a dozen. Almost all of these same criticisms were lodged against Whitney Houston when she came on the scene, and Whitney's first album wasn't nearly as creative. More power to the soulful sisters (collectively) and you know you make those who came before you very proud. Kudos Alicia, India, Janet, Mariah, Whitney, Mary J., et al., kudos.
Mar 1st, 2002, 05:02 PM
Actually Deira, I could give a number of reasons why Whitney's debut is a far more powerful debut than Alicia's, but I am - quite literally in a hurry right now! :p
I hear Alicia talk a lot about the "truth" in music, and no way am I gonna judge her on 1 album. It just seems to me like the whole of the American entertainment industry and media already did.
Mar 1st, 2002, 06:25 PM
I must mix in the wrong circles, 'cos I've never heard of her.
Mar 1st, 2002, 06:31 PM
I think she is very overrated
Mar 1st, 2002, 07:57 PM
Beige and supremeross, don't get my hopes up about LL! Many of the others listed I've heard rumors about, but never LL. Now my fantasy doesn't seem like such a stretch :)
Mar 2nd, 2002, 05:05 AM
I think HATE is a bit too strong, but she isn't as good as Janet or India Arie;)
Mar 4th, 2002, 03:22 PM
I don't really like Alicia either, a bit overrated, I agree
and the thread is called "Come in if you hate Alicia Keys" so if it upsets you, why don't you just stay out or create a "come in if you love Alicia" thread, or maybe "come in if you think Alicia is/isn't a lesbian"
