J Kostanic/H Nagyova def. C Dhenin/L Bacheva 63 75

Kostanic/Nagyova is a good team even if I think they did not communicate enough together, Henrietta was better than Jelena who made some big mistake, Caroline played well, good serve and excellent volley as often, but her partner was… not here. She really made an awful match, her serve was ok, but smash and volley were not really good (to be friendly….) as well as baseline game, the other team practically always played on her . Caroline was completely angry about her partner. It’s a shame Roland Garros is really important for her. I think I was the last time they played together.

M Sequera/L McShea def. K Peshke/B Rittner. 76 76

Nice match, equilibrated. Kveta impressed me, she is really in fit after a long peariod of injuries. She made a really good match begin. Barbara Rittner game is also really nice to see. Lisa McShea impressed me a lot too bad she did not played with Caroline Dhenin…. She form a good team with Milagros Sequera.

R Fugiwara/S Asagoe def. A Sugiyama/L Huber 61 16 63

I did not really like that match. Rika and Shinobu made an excellent first set and was a little bit lucky. Ai and Liezel seemed to be empathic. In second set, Liezel made excellent serve in smash but in last last set, Rika and Shinobu made the difference. They were really happy with this victory!

A & A Serra Zanetti def. Benesova/Pastikova 16 63 62

I only saw 3 games of this match. Not really interested.

C Martinez/J Husarova def. S Beltrame/C Pin 63 61

Ouaouh, Janette and Conchita ARE excellent double players, really complete: good volley, baseline game, return, lob… They impressed me a lot. Severine and Camille tried something in first set, but were without contest under the experimented teams.

P Tarabini/G Dulko def. Z Zheng/Yan 67 63 63

Interesting match, good match ( the last I saw), the Chinese team won the tie break of the 1st set easily, But in second and third set, Patricia and Gisela take advantage. The two Chinese players player well, moved very well. Patricia had some trouble with her serve, but is an excellent net player, she gets on very well with Gisela who had a good serve and baseline game. There was some tension in that match, Zheng hit Patricia on a smash, and Patricia hit her on a smash 5 minutes after….

M Washington/J Hopkins def. T Poutchek/ Y Beygelzimer. 62 63

Tatiana and Yulia were not in a good day, the last time I saw them played, they impressed me, but no here. Mashona made good volley and smash. Jennifer had an excellent serve.

Thanks for your report. Just a few corrections if I may, from what I have seen :

YAN Zi was much below her usual tennis and had difficulties to move on court. She was particularly tense + the court was humid with the rain. YAN Zi hit a few DF too (I think 5-6 during the match, which is far too high for doubles).

Patricia was very present at the net, poaching often and anticipating the points well. While in the first set, the Chinese players managed to either pass her or lob her, they did not vary their points enough in the second set so that Patricia could impose her net game. She really made the difference while the Chinese pair was leading 3-1 in the last set.

It is quite common in a tennis match (unfortunately) to hit opponents and the history of the shots is :
- YAN Zi hit Patricia (in the head?) with a forehand
- ZHENG Jie hit a ball to Patricia who had stayed at the net on her overhead
- later on, Patricia hit ZHENG Jie with a high forehand volley.

No particular tension, though Patricia was a bit upset after the shot of Zi (who immediately apologised, and meant it). Patricia was certainly more upset with the umpire (and got a warning) as she believed on a point that ZHENG Jie had touched the net, while no one else had seen it.
