rightous that's debatable!! northern ireland does have a nicer accent though IMO even though a lot of people say it's harsher than ours.
Where in the north are u from? One of my flatmates from a couple of years ago was from Carrickfergus, where i've never been to but i hope to go someday.

i look forward to paddy's day every year cos even over in england the pub is packed all day and i think it's one of the few days of the year when you can go on an all day drinking session, great fun. Actually talking of drink I'm getting smashed tonight, i think i deserve it!

Stevek I'm from Tyrone but I go to univ. at Queens in Belfast so I spend most of my life there. Yeah St. Paddy's day is just more an excuse to drink is it not!!!!lol

Agh the Belfast accent is brutal on the ear I would rather listen to the Dublin accent any time of the day. So what do u do, r u at univ. then or do u work?

:wavey: Evey, its so bloody cold here, its so icy windy and there's snow:( But alas I have to do work so it means I have to saty in so it might be a good thing:) So what r u up to, how was work, treating u well???:)

So I think we all know Ireland is going to beat all ur asses at Rugby, what about Football, oh thats right Wales or Scotland aren't at the World Cup;)

belfast mightn't be the nicest but the rest of the north is really nice!
a girl from tyrone used to sit beside me at work and it's the nicest accent. it was so nice to hear her speak.

My mother is from dublin, but i really don't like the accent, at least hers isn't that strong so it's ok.
Scottish accents are really nice as well though, really cute.

i'm in Sunderland for university. U know the course i do they won't allow anyone from the south into Queens to do my course because the chemistry in the republic isn't to a high enough standard.

An bhfuil tu aon gaeilge a ra rightous? I've nearly forgotten it all now it's slipping away!

Yeah Belfast is ok, I like the West of NI so much better, thanks Stevek what can I say Tyrone people are the nicest and of course the sexiest in ireland, that goes without saying!!!!lol

yeah Queens is a bit snobby for its own good some times, its agood univ, but it ain't that good. So how do u like Sunderland, I have a frined who goes there, she likes it. Do u live in Dublin, I have only been 3 times, I like it but its not as nice as I thought it might be.

My Gaelic is so bad, I'll get back to u on that!!!lol

I like the Scottish accent as well, Stevek and Evey am I sensing sexual tension;)

Awwww I thought this was gonna be about Celtic music. I LOVE Cetlic music.

Well I'm not Scottish, Irish or whatever other country that is considered to be Celtic. My Grandpa is Scottush though. He's dead now though but when he got drunk he would speak in Gallick (sp?) and no one would understand a bloody thing he was saying. Quite funny. :)

It's funny cos i noticed i have less trouble to understand the Scots than the Irish whereas we always say the Scottish accent is the most difficult to understand.

umm ok... so I'm not *technically* Briths, Irish, Scottish or Welsh, but the rest of my family are Pommies, and I have a British passport - does that quallify me to come into this thread? :D

I'm going to an irish pub on Saturday! :D Plus I'm gonna drag my friends out on St. Paddy's day! :D

Sarah sweetie, Pommie's are not Celtic but since I like u so much u can join away:)

David the really broad Scotish accent is just impossible to understand:)

Viva what type of Celtic music do u like, the traditional stuff like the Cheifians and Clannad, or Enya or the Corrs!!!

lol Hence the fact I was asking if I quallify (I thought being British might be close enough) ;) Besides, you are from Northern Ireland, which is technically part of Britain, as are Wales and Scotland so... :p

Besides, you know I'm a Corrs nut...the reason I'm going to the Irish pub this Saturday is for a Corrs fan meet up! :D

Enya is ok, but I like a lot of traditional. Mainly a lot of instrumental instead of vocal. Particularily the flute, fiddle, piccolo. I don't really know the names of any but I like these songs:

Christ Lullaby Child
Elven Flute - Record Of Lodess War
Greensleeves - Flute
Follow My Highland Soldier
O come, O Come Emanuel - Yes not a Celtic song but sounds nice when played Celtic-ly ....if that made sense, anyway I have it on CD
When Irish Eyes Are Smiling
An Irish Party In Third Class - from Titanic
Danny Boy
Kelly, The Boy From Killan
Whiskey In The Jar
The Rose Of Tralee
The Skye Boat Song
An Irish Lullaby
Flower Of Scotland
Reel Around The Sun (from Riverdance)
Ballykissangel
Lord Of The Dance
Carrickfergus
Lift The Wings (from Riverdance)
The Rocky Road To Dublin
Oh Waly Waly

That's all I can think of now

Enya Songs:
Adiemus
Ebudae
Boadicea
May It Be

I'm kinda new to Enya.

And the Duelling Violins in Riverdance is great too.

:)

Ohh, I don't think I'm really the best person to answer "cultural identity" questions - I'm very proud of Wales but was born in England (does this disqualify me from further participation here? :p) and I don't speak any of the language. We need another Welsh poster to come in here, methinks. :D

Evey your welcome! I think we're agreed scottish and irish accents are the nicest then!

Rightous, I'm from Roscommon originally (don't tell me you haven't heard of it!) I met someone from Newry yesterday and she didn't know where it was.
Sunderland is a dump but it's very close to Newcastle which is a really nice place (very cold though) I'm moving to London in august anyway when/if i finish uni so i'm looking forward to that.

Actually come to think of it Ireland/Wales/Scotland don't really have any decent tennis players, i can't remember ever seeing an irish tennis player at wimbeldon. Well we can always hope!

Viva I'm impressed with your knowledge of irish music:)
As rightous said you are far more knowledgeable than i am.

Viva

rightous
Mar 1st, 2002, 05:56 PM
Stevek of course I have heard of Roscommon (awful football team;) ) but yes, Newry people aren't the brightest lights in the shop so i wouldn't worry, most of my family live there and I;m sure they have hardly heard of Belfast.

Are u getng a job or planning to study more, I think I'm going to travel around Oz for a while after univ. I'm a little scared at the prospect of getting a REAL job.

And no the Celtic nations don't have any great tennis players, we have Yvonne Doyle, Kelly Liggan to name a few but thats it.

And Viva yes I'm very impressed, what type of blood do u have;)

stevek
Mar 3rd, 2002, 09:00 PM
Rightous, you slagging roscommon off?? I'll have to take you on in a tennis match, roscommon vs tyrone, that will soon settle it!

I've got a trainee job in london starting in august and then i want to travel too. Partly cos i want to see places and partly cos i don't want to work. My mother of course wants me on the first plane home once I'm qualified. But then of course all the irish i know over here their parents are like that.

Why r u called rightous anyway, training to b a priest or something?

I've actually seen Yvonne Doyle and Karen Nugent play. The were playing doubles at a tournament in Sunderland and they won it. There was like about 2 other people watching though. I thought they seemed quite good. Liggan seems to b playing very badly at the moment though, loses all the time.

ooh... so, I went to this place called The Celtic Club on Saturday night, and it really sucked, so we ended up going to Bridie O'Reilly's, and IT ROCKED!!! I am sooooooo going back there again!!! I think I might even go there on St. Paddy's Day (but it will have to be early so I can actually get a seat! lol I'll drag my friends along also! :D). So, at Bridie's I met some Irish people, who were totally drunk by the time I got there (who said the Irish could outdrink everyone? ;) ). Well, I only really talked to one of the guys, who's name was Joe or Joel... not sure which. He's from Wexford apparantly! :D He was quite funny because he was totally pissed and could hardly talk properly! :p

Mar 4th, 2002, 11:18 PM
stevek Roscommon couldn't beat us at football I dubt u could beat me at Tennis (I suppose I could play with my left hand;) )

I know what u mean about qualifying and then not knowing what to do, I think I'm going to Oz for a while (So Viva, Sarah and BCP Watch out) I think I'll travel as well, I find it scary getting a PROPER job!!!!lol What course r u doing??

Me a priest???Have u read any of my posts!!!!lol No I don't think so, I couldn't coipe with the dog collar.

yeah Kelly isn't playing that great, Yvonne is a really good player, esp. a doubles palyer she was in the Top 100 doubles ranks, hopefully she can get back to that level.

Sarah Wexford is pretty funky although its cut off from teh rest of western civilisation;)!!!!lol I'm glad u had a good time, did u like the rest of the Funky Corrs group. Sarah we can drink any other nation under the table, obviously the lad is an imposter or he had been drinking a long time!!!!lol:)

Right, if you come to Melbourne, I'm taking ya out fo a drink (to an Irish pub naturally), so you can show me how it's done (drinking everyone else under the table that is). ;)

I hope Kelly can start playing well again... I have seen her at AO quallies the last couple of years! I was hoping she'd get into the MD this year! I haven't seen Yvonne play! :(

Well, I don't even know where Wexford is! lmao... Where is it in comparison to Dublin? If you tell me that, then I'll have a fair idea! ;) *erm* I think the drunk lad had been drinking for quite a while, as had the rest of the group, judging by the load of bottles and glasses (empty) on their table! ;)

Savvi, my brother went down to the match (I had to work:( ) he said it was a great atmosphere. What can we say the Scots just weren't up the challenge!!!!Maybe they should play Italy every week to stand a chance!!!!!lol;)

I don't understand why Queen's don't accept Irish Chemistry students, as Stevek said they think u don;t have the standard but u do for everyhtin else, who knows with the lot who run Queens.

I learnt Gaelic for 3 years and I swore I know none of it now:( can u get me a hint. btw whereabouts r u from??

Rightous forget it! you'll never beat me at tennis, when I'm rich and can afford it, I'll be hiring "fraulein forehand" Steffi Graf as my personal tennis trainer, then there'll be know stopping me!!

I also applied to Coleraine to do Optometry and they said 5As and a B, i don't think they wanted me. Actually a girl from my town is doing final year psychology in Queens maybe u know her?

Steve my dear friend, u could be trained by Steffi herself I would still kick ur ass all over the court (in a loving way;) ) but its not the winning its the taking part that counts;)

Rightous my friend has lent me a racquet that cost over 200 pound and has come direct from switzerland,so i'm quite happy with it. Anyway surely if u could beat agassi and sampras u could also play the doubles and then we would win that way!

I met my mate from ennis at the weekend and we had a good few irish conversations which were good

Stevek HAPPY ST.PATRICKS DAY and the same to EVERYONE ELSE. When are you going to London, are you staying in Ireland for long, how often do ya come back. Btw did ya hear waht David Trimble said about Ireland:o

And on the issue of playing doubles, you see I can't beat Pete and Andre on my own and then beat both of them in singles that asking a little too much I was thinking of playin for GB cos then I might have a little chance;)

Sarah I hope you have a good St. Patricks since you will be celebrating it before the rest of us, any word on your gf has she sorted out her issues.

Happy Paddys day to you too rightous. I went down to london last weekend, had a great time, it really is a great place to live. My mate down there told me what David Trimble said, i can't remember exactly the quote but it was very funny, we had a good laugh about it. What was it he said again? he really has no clue.
I'm goin home on wednesday for two weeks for the easter holidays, but it will b very busy as i have a dissertation to write and stuff. I don't really come home that often with uni and stuff.

i'm starting drinking about 1 or 2 on paddys day, there is some sort of seperate venue all the irish have organised cos the only irish pub in the city has shut down, so i'll go along to that for a while.

Play for GB if u want!! shows your loyalty to ireland lol

Hmm... nah... I don't think the ex gf has sorted out her stuff yet *sighs* oh well...

I'm getting quite excited about St. Paddy's Day and I'm not even Irish! lmao There's gonna be a big street party here outside of Bridie's, and it's open all day, so I figure if I go in the evening sometime I should be safe! lol I don't have anything green to wear though! :( Maybe my Corrs t-shirt will have to do - besides, it's Caroline's birthday on the 17th also! :D

ooh... the other day at work, a couple of Irish guys came in (as they often do), but one gave me the wrong money, so I had to ask him again for the right amount. Anyway, the guy behind him obviously knew him, because he goes, "Oh don't trust him, he still doesn't know our money yet!" And then when the two Irish guys left, I said to the other guy "Well, they'll be having fun on SUnday anyway" and he looked at me and then goes, "Oh yeah"! So I said, "St. Paddy's say - they'll be getting pissed I'd assume" and we both laughed! :D

And just to show how truly multicultural my town is we even had a Dutchie in at work today (to buy a phonecard - I even got to speak some Dutch to him - well, OK, so it's nothing to do with celtic, but I was happy anyway)! :p

Right, we need more Welsh on this thread so here I am. Number seems a little low to me!!
I'm celtic and proud of it! ;)

Someone asked if the Welsh were the most English of the celts...well in a word - no ;) Seriously I don't think we are when you think that Welsh is still spoken on the streets in most areas of Wales. I don't know enough about it to be honest, but the Welsh language and our channel S4C help keep our national identity. :)
