Davenport's licence

Lindsay Davenport is smiling again. Hot-foot from her surprise defeat at the hands of Claudine Schaul in the Strasbourg Open, the 27-year-old flew into Charles de Gaulle airport on Saturday, having already forgotten about missing out on a 41st singles title and focusing on Grand Slam number two, reports James Buddell.

This year the former world number one is having fun.

Parting from her coach of seven years, Robert Van't Hof, and getting married meant that European tournament's became a grind for Davenport last year.

Having worked with Adam Peterson for the past 15 months, the American is far happier with the fact that "we're not making changes to my game that I was making with Robert on a weekly basis," she explained.

Davenport believes Petersen, a former touring pro for three years, brings "support and strategy to a game that has already been shaped by other people."

The laid-back and relaxed approach that personifies Peterson's attitude, has helped Davenport grow in confidence in recent weeks, but she still doesn't believe can be counted as a favourite to win the French Open.

Having played for five months with an injury the Californian believes she is "the lowest of the top five or six that have a chance to win the tournament.

"Physically I feel great. I feel in ten times better shape than I did, five or six, or even eight or nine years ago. But, I realise that this is the most difficult [Grand Slam] by far for me to win, " she explained.

"I'm just honest about it," Davenport said smiling.

The winner of three Grand Slam titles, with a career-best semi-final performance at Roland Garros in 1998, need not worry about her opening round opponent, Virginie Pichet.

On Friday, following the singles draw ceremony, the Frenchwoman saying: "Have you heard who I have got, I can't believe it... it's unbelievable!" To which, a family member replied: "At least you'll play the match on centre court."

Yeah I was surprised to see that ESPN showed Lindsay when I went through my tape yesterday after work. The first set was pretty bad, mainly marred by losing her serve so often. But the second set was pretty good from Lindsay. She looked really...disinterested, during the whole match. Even when she'd hit an ace or a winner she'd just walk slowly to the line, and even bounce her racket or kick the dirt after winning points. But it's okay to do that in the first rounds, just keep getting better and remember that you can win, Lindsay!

you can do it

Lindsay never liked clay and possibly lost a little confidence in loosing the final on the weekend. I think these "easy" early round opponants are good to help lindsay get rid of the "couldn't be bothered" attitude. If she get's on into the later rounds (ie quarters) then interest and belief will kick in - I'm sure. Especially if she gets a great win verse Amilie - plus the fact that Justines loss today has blown the whole top-end semi final section open!

Lindsay's in with a chance guys! I'll be in Guernsey for the final, so hopefully I can watch it while over there.

Out of interest, does anyone know if RG grounds can be enetered on Finals day via buying a ground pass ticket on the day? I ask because Guernsey is only a cheap 30min flight away from Paris and if I'm feeling adventurous then I might pay a visit if LD reaches the final ;)

Lindsay won her match 6-4 6-1 today and was only broken once. She looked much better than she did on Monday.

Lindsay plays her third round match against qualifier Marissa Irvin on Friday.

see, she will improve as she progresses - undoubtably! If she comes across Amilie in the 1/4's, then I think that could well be her toughest match until the finals (providing she gets that far)

Anyhow, C'MON LINDSAY! :bounce:

Congrats Lindsya on the win in third round!! 6-1, 6-4. Seems like youre playing much better.
Now it Dementieva. I really deslike this girl, and she's serving so poorly. Hope you can get an advantage on that. Just hope you play your good tennis on Sunday and beat the hell out of this girl!

PD: I heard Lindsay had some sort of problem with her knee... what is it?

Jan
May 29th, 2004, 04:29 PM
Lindsay does have a plaster on her knee but I don't know what the problem is? Does anyone know yet? It did not seem to mar her performance against Irvin although I have not seen any of her matches yet as Eurosport have managed to to shows their favourites, which as usual is more mens matches than womens. Give me Sky Sports anyday or Grand Slam Tennis.

Go Lindsay agaainst Elena D and I d hope your knee is ok.

Lindsay tweaked a tendon in her knee, but it is not serious. If not treated it can be painful, but it does not do any actualy damage.

I taped her match yesterday against Marissa and Lindsay was playing much better. In the second set Marissa was playing well and being agressive, and Lindsay still handled her easily.

Thanks Andrew for the news on Lindsay's knee. So glad it is not serious. Hope she does not have too much pain after playing all that time last year with her foot problem. Lets wish her well against Elena D tomorrow. :D

I'm going to make up a suggestion packet for my fellow Lindsay fans who plan on waking up freakishly early tomorrow to watch her match.

1. Wake up 5 minutes before Lindsay's match is scheduled to start (11 am Paris time, 5 am EST).

2. Turn on your computer, then run to make a pot of coffee to keep you alive.

3. Grab a cookie to take with you.

4. Go to the RG website and begin watching the scores.

Just my morning match-viewing rituals I thought I'd share with you.
