Maria Sharapova:

"I felt really good today about my game. I felt confident and pretty solid except at the beginning was a little sloppy. But other than that, I made a few good shots. Physically, I felt great. You know, she did give me a little hard time with the slice, but I thought I pretty much handled that well.

I'm just looking forward to the next round right now against Vera. I know it's gonna be a tough match, but I'm ready. I'm very confident. So it will be very interesting."

You make me laugh! I wish they were from an e-mail direct to me!

But actually they were from the wtatour.com

Below is another paragraph about Masha:

"Zvonareva will face another young Russian star in the third round after Sharapova dropped just two games in a 62 60 victory against Rita Grande. Sharapova, who is playing at Roland Garros for just the second time, has yielded only five games in two impressive victories."

By Pam Shriver

Special to ESPN.com

Here's a look at what might happen in the other matches.

Paola Suarez (14), Argentina, vs. Maria Sharapova (18), Russia
As long as Sharapova, who turned 17 in April, doesn't get in awe or overly excited about this situation, she should do well. Out of the possible matchups, playing Suarez to get to a semifinal is a great opportunity, although Suarez is a little tougher to beat on clay than other surfaces.

It seems, though, that Sharapova is ready to arrive in the final four. She's growing into the whole scene. Each month, she seems more confident of her place in women's tennis. She's a star on the rise.
Pick: Sharapova

Every time Masha lost like this, I just feel sad because I know Masha must be even sadder, so I think about her a lot.

yeah, quite disappointing. The most annoying thing is that Masha could not control her nerves. Even most powerful cannon wouldn't help you if your aim is wrong.

Anyway, what doesn't kill you just makes you stronger. Masha's still very young, there's no rush, plenty of time to improve game, gain experience and eventually become #1 ;)

I wasn't saying that she was disappointing - I was saying that considering the circumstances (Williams and Mauresmo out, very open draw) its a big, big shame that she isn't in the semi's.

I agree, but I think that her lack of experience in these big matches also came into play today and it showed, as she was never at ease with her shots and she couldn't adjust to the wet conditions that interfered with her play by slowing down her game. Things like that, I think will improve as she grows more experienced in grand slam matches.

forgot to say...

But keep in mind that this is already a great result for Masha considering that last year she had to qualify and lost in the first round. So this year has been an amazing run for Masha so far, and I hope it continues to be so.

Wimbleton is just around the corner ... Best of Luck, Masha!

If it didn't rain and the court was dry, Masha might have a chance - might only.

Suarez is a higher ranked, more experienced and better clay court player than Masha.

And a lot of people wrote in GM before this match that on any surface other than clay, it's most likely that Masha would win against Suarez - now we will need to wait and see if that really happens when they play again next time.

Yes, it's true that "Williams and Mauresmo out, very open draw", but our Masha simply lacks experience in playing on damp clay court.

Yeh, you are completely right!

Masha has exceeded all expectations with her progress at Roland Garros this year, and we should be proud of that. It is a mark of how far she has come that we are disappointed she did not reach the semi's. We should praise her achivements this year, and continue to wish her the best of the luck for her future tournaments, for which there will be many, and for which she will continue to improve! :yeah:

VeraNuVirgosFan

...It is a mark of how far she has come that we are disappointed she did not reach the semi's...
Eddy, have you read Suarez's post-match interview? (I've posted part of it in Maria Cheering thread).

I just read it today and it helps me understand the court's conditions better, and it seems to me that the court was too heavy for Masha to play good.

I know, but we would have liked her to have reached the semi's right? And we all thought before the match she had a good chance, right?

I didn't think before the match that Masha had a good chance because I'd simply never seen Suarez play before.

But after I saw how Suarez played Elena D. yesterday, I certainly keep thinking that Masha could have a good chance if it didn't rain a lot before her match.

Of course, she would have had a good chance if it wasn't raining!

Anyways, there is no point dwelling on the past, we must now look to the future, and an exciting grass season! :yeah:
