Whenever I watch the 1998 US Open final and Lindsay's acceptance speech, she cracks me up! After receiving the check for $700,000 and the guy tells the crowd that it's Lindsay's mom's birthday, Lindsay laughs and says "yeah I guess she thinks she's getting a really nice gift now, huh?" gets me every time...

Venus after beating Monica 6-2, 6-3 at the 2002 US Open:

The interviewer told her she was facing Mauresmo in the semis and then said "after her then perhaps Serena in the final", Venus gets a sly smile on in the middle of his question and just says, "PERHAPS" He asked her to talk about a potential WS final and she looked at him like was naive and said "Well we have to win the MATCHES to get there first."

I know it doesn't sound real funny telling it here, but you had to see it.

Not necessarily my favourite players, but here are some I find pretty funny.

"Tonight I felt like I should have been in a different sport like boxing because I really wanted to hit someone."
- A frustrated Steffi Graf, who made a series of errors in a match (that she won) at the 1988 Mahwah tournament.

"I come to play Steffi, not to pray to her."
- A 17-year-old Arantxa Sanchez on the eve of her 1989 French final which everyone expected her to lose easily.

"She gonna wanna kill me out there."
- Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, before her 1989 Wimbledon quarterfinal against Graf, whom she had stunned in the French final that year

"She's a big bad wolf...it was like playing a Mack truck...By the third set, I was in a big hole, and I wasn't going to get out of it unless she sprained an ankle or something. Then I remembered that Mack trucks don't get sprained ankles."
- Martina Navratilova on Monica Seles who beat Navratilova in straight sets in the 1992 Slims Championship final

"I stalled more"
- The one and only Pamela Howard Shriver, when told that her 6-1, 6-2 demolition by Graf in the 1988 Wimbledon semis had been a tad longer than the 6-0, 6-2 beating Graf had given her in the 1987 Wimbledon semis.

"Walking out there."
- Pam Shriver, when asked to identify the turning point of the 6-0, 6-2 nightmare against Graf in the 1987 Wimbledon semis.

"If she comes in here and says she has anything, I'll kill her."
- Pam Shriver, after a 6-2, 6-1 loss in the 1983 US Open semis against Navratilova. Navratilova lost to Shriver in three sets in the 1982 US Open quarters, and then told the press she'd been suffering from toxoplasmosis.

CoryAnnAvants#1

"Anna can say whatever she wants. The point is that I'm in the semifinals and she's in the hotel room packing."
-Lindsay Davenport, after a reporter told Lindsay how Kournikova claimed to have played one of her worst matches and would beat her soundly on a good day.

Reporter: Serena, your match against Yvette Basting took 32 minutes. What took longer, the match or doing your hair?
Serena: You want the truth? My hair.

"Black is my favourite colour, it's calmness, elegance. I like olive-green or grey as well. Only gaudy colours I can't stand. Because of that this André Agassi leaves me completely cold. Not my case, these colourful feathers."
- Steffi Graf in 1990. (Presumably, this comment is to be never mentioned in the Agassi household ;) )

"A couple of years ago, we nicknamed Steffi Graf's forehand Jaws. And that music would go perfectly when she starts running in to the net, swarming on that little ball."
- Former pro JoAnne Russell who was in the NBC commentary box for the 1988 Wimbledon final.

After Graf had played Kournikova for the first time --
Q. Steffi, she's only just turned 15. You see what she's wearing on the
court, what she wears in the players' lounge, her demeanor. Do you think for
someone who has only just turned 15, is there anything slightly disquieting
about it?
STEFFI GRAF: Don't you like it? I know you just got married, but I know
exactly where you're trying to lead to, don't worry.

"The all-verb final."
- Mary Carillo, on Sabine Hack playing Mary Pierce in a tournament final.

"Hana can beat any player on any given day, unless Martina is playing on the
same given day."
- Carling Bassett on Hana Mandlikova

"What have I learned from playing Martina? I've learned how to shake her
hand at the net."
- Bettina Bunge

Agreed re: head-to-head. I just had to be obnoxious with the dumb b****. The rankings, Steffi was close, but that was more a result of a flawed ranking system than anything else. (See Mary Carillo comments during 1993 AO final for details) However, Steffi was clearly #2, just like Monica was clearly #1. No way did Steffi deserve to be ranked #1 anytime prior to the attack once Seles took over.

I'd rather not get into a Graf-Seles debate either. Let's stick with the topic.

STERN: So a dummy could play excellent tennis?

GRAF: I know a few players who are still downright children. But yet they
are of the firm conviction that they are the best. It is exactly this
conceit that makes up their personality. And therefore they go into the
stadium and mostly play beyond their means. Sounds strange, doesn't it? But
it's true. They really play with 120 percent of their ability. That is to
say, they stir themselves up with their self-confidence. But you'll regret
it if you want to exchange a few words with them after the match.

It's mean but

The rankings, Steffi was close, but that was more a result of a flawed ranking system than anything else. (See Mary Carillo comments during 1993 AO final for details) However, Steffi was clearly #2, just like Monica was clearly #1.

Er, back then, the WTA used a divisor which is usually considered one of the best ranking systems. Better than the current Best N system, in any case.

No way did Steffi deserve to be ranked #1 anytime prior to the attack once Seles took over.

This, I'd agree with. However, Lloyd over on rst once showed how close the rankings actually were, and how Graf could have had a legitimate case for #1 if she had managed to beat Seles in the 1992 FO final. Sadly though, Parche also robbed Graf of the chance to prove herself against her rival, and affected both their careers.

Jen saying "Can you turn off your fucking baby please?" When a baby cried during her match.

OMG

Did she really say that? It´s kinda hilarious, but also very rude...

One of my on-court faves: Myskina´s verbal outbursts at the Aussie Open´04 against Chanda Rubin, how funny was that?

Tennis-x.com made a quite funny summary of her shouts:

"MOST ENTERTAINING: Anastasia Myskina
Come on, what's better than watching Russian Anastasia Myskina blow up at her coach while on court. For those of you who didn't get to see it live, it went something like this: After missing a backhand into the net at break point, Anastasia would look up at coach and occasional lover, Jens Gerlach, and scream out, "What the $%#, God damnit next time teach me how to hit a #%$^@ backhand in. This is all your #$&# fault, mother-#*$##." Or something like that. Says Gerlach, who is German and speaks no Russian, "She misses a shot, and she gets pissed." Now that's spot on."

...I was laughing so hard during that match... :smash:

Lindsay while talking about signing autographs.... It went something like:

"I like the BIG round balls. You can grab them better, it is easier for you". Then everybody stood silent, and a few seconds later Lindsay and all the interviewers cracked up!

Maybe it's not so funny reading it, but it sure is funny as hell listenting to it!

Q: Did you like her lilac dress?
A: Yes.

Just a joke here! ;)
Actually that was hilarious, because this question was the WHOLE interview with Justine. I remember laughing my ass off when I read that :haha: Justine comes out after her match, a journalist asks her if she liked her lilac dress, she says yes, stands up and leaves :haha: :haha: That's just sooo absurd it's funny (my kind of humour, sorry  )

This is an interview with Jelena(15 at the time) and LEslie Bowrey(her aussie mentor/coach):

"...For Dokic, that is tipped to mean the start of some bigger cheques and,
eventually, the means for some serious spending for a family that
arrived in a new country not so long ago with nothing. So, with
Philippoussis as inspiration, guess what will be at the top of the
teenager's shopping list?

Dokic: "Cars! You know how Mark's got a house in Florida, he's bought
the extra two houses next to him, just so he can park all his cars. He
just signed the papers. Can you believe that? He's got like eight cars -
Jaguars, Porsches, Ferraris ..."

Bowrey: "But you never want to drive!"

Dokic: "Yeah, it's scary driving, but it's good. You know all those
luxury cars, they're awesome. I'll see what there is when I'm 17 ... I
think I'll drive Lesley's Mirage."

Bowrey: "No you won't! Not on your life."

Oh well, so much for that plan, but Dokic has others. Big ones. Wait.
You'll see."
