View Full Version : Are you concerned about the athletes' safety at the upcoming Olympics?

I've been reading so many articles on the upcoming Summer Olympics and wonder if the games will be able to go on safely. With the recent bombing (where nobody got hurt) it seems like it's going to be really tough to keep things safe. With the construction not even completed, I wonder how smoothly the games can be run. Also, the USOC is telling American athletes not to celebrate too much because it could be a risk. I think it could be tough for tennis players to play against the Greek players.

What does everyone think of upcoming games?

The Olympics is a big waste of money and time. The "security" is gonna be frightening at best. Articles here today say that the Americans have been told not to celebrate or wave the American flag when they win events because it may make some people mad or hate America more.   I say run around and jump and scream and wave your flag. If someone doesn't like it then oh well. People that hate America are gonna hate America regardless. So no need to :banghead: on this one!

If I was a tennis player, or an NBA player... I definitely wouldn't go.

If I was in the majority of the sports there... where the Olympics is the only thing that matters... I would go.

I am concerned. I think it's very COWARDLY and SELFISH of terrorist to use the OLYMPICS as a platform to promote an agenda.

Innocent lives are at stake and that don't make me feel so good. Competition will not be at it's peak for worrying about what's going to happen. I am concerned, and PRAYING that if the USA don't pull out of the OLYMPICS or any other nation...that the SECURITY is of the HIGHEST QUALITY!

This honestly makes me furious with this BIG BUSINESS we call War.

I would be :scared: if I had to go to the Olympics, but it would be crap to not go because of that.

I personally hope the US just pulls out of the Olympics...

I don't want the chance of any innocent people being killed. I don't want psycho Bush to have any more reason to continue fighting this pointless war.

No...I think everything that can possibly be done will be done to keep all the athletes safe. Also, the US athletes will have extra security provided by the US government.

It simply comes down to each individual making their own decision as to go or not. Those who don't want to go won't and those who do will. I heard some US b-ball players are pulling out because of security concerns and that's fine.
This has freed-up spots for those athletes that wish to compete.

For many athletes this is the pinnacle of their career's, the ultimate.
The majority wants things to be safe and I'm sure no country would send their teams unless they felt that things were safe.

At the same time, their can be no certainties, no garuntees.
I'll never forget hearing a couple of days before Atlanta and security official
on CNN say that nothing could go wrong and at that moment I though "how much do you want to bet something will". All everybody can do is their best and if it isn't up to a countries satisfaction then they'll act accordingly.

As for the celebrating thing, I say anyone should celebrate and wave their flags! Unfortunately, this is just another instance of people being made to feel fear, caution, or what have you because of something their government has done, wheather agreed with or not.

All that being said, I definitely think the US Team will not pull out
and represent well! And as for the tennis players, I don't see any of them not going to Athens or being disrespected should they play Daniilidou or any other Greek player.

The negative publicity directed towards the Athens games by the the likes of CNN and BBC is truly disturbing. It's almost as though they want something to go wrong.

I'm not worried about the safety of the players. I think even though there is a small threat that these things get blown out of proportion.

I agree with you and blablabla. The American and British media are the pros in sensationalising the smallest news item. Not to say that terror threats are not to be taken seriously. It's just that, sometimes instead of doing the Olympics (or whatever) good, they are actually harming The Games.

BTW: In today's Toronto Star, Daniel Nestor himself said he is very concerned about security that he decided to stay in the Athlete's Village instead of with his girlfriend in Athens.

I hope that our tennis players have the good sense to stay home. Especially Venus and Serena.

A bit ago three bombs exploded in Athens and officials were saying:"Hey. No big deal. Bombs go off here all the time.

Excuse me?

If that's not something out of Bizarro, I don't know what is.
