View Full Version : RG seeds - Leave it alone

I've changed my mind. I've concluded that the best RG seeding is to just go by the WTA rankings.

01 Justine Henin-Hardenne
02 Amelie Mauresmo
03 Lindsay Davenport
04 Anastasia Myskina
05 Nadia Petrova
06 Serena Williams
07 Venus Williams
08 Jennifer Capriati

Not because it's fair. My idea of 'fair' would be to seed by clay court results. But rather, because the current prospective QF matches are pretty compelling. There are some downsides. Justine and Amelie could catch Venus or Serena a round early. This is hardly giving the top two seeds the easiest draw. But if they wanted to win the championship, odds are at least one of them would have to be faced anyway. Venus and Serena could wind up on the same side of the draw. Well, yes. But unless you seed them #3 and #4, that risk is there anyway.

As it stands, #1-#4 includes the world #1 and defending champ, the best player in France and the AI champ. #5-#8 hold the two previous champs, and the Berlin champ. Pretty balanced. And, unless they lose to someone outside the top ten, you're guaranteed two out of Henin-Hardenne, Mauresmo, Williams, Williams, and Capriati in the semis. From a TV ratings perspective, that's pretty good. If you're looking at a balanced draw, competitive QFs, and SFs, and as good odds of having a couple of stars in the semis as you're gonna get, why change anything?

Interesting...but it will never happen.

Aren't RG seeds done according to rankings after Rome? If so, you're wrong regarding Venus, Capriati and Petrova's seeds.

If the sisters stay in the 5-8 range, I think 9-12 will be pissed off. I'd rather have Myskina or Petrova than Venus or Serena in the 4th round.

Do we really want this to happen??

(1) Henin-Hardenne
(6) Serena Williams

(8) Venus Williams
(4) Davenport

(3) Myskina
(7) Petrova

(2) Mauresmo
(5) Capriati

It should be
1.Justine
2.Amelie
3.Serena
4.Venus

Venus or Serena should not be placed ahead of Amelie in my opinion re: results.

I hope venus and serena get moved up to 3 and 4 because then k-lina will avoid them in the round of 16 and the only person she will have to worry about is capriati, but that is only a 1 in 4 chance... :)

Not bad not bad..but I donīt think either Juju or Momo would want to meet the sisters in QF already...you never know when their form will return...

i mean hey, when the sisters rankings were low, people we puttin them down for not playing enough. now that they have improved so much, and their rankings low this year from injuries. people are wanting them to be seeded higher than their actual ranking. it is so funnie when you look back.

i see what you are saying, and you may not have been one of those individuals, but its just the point to make when you think back to a couple years ago and now.

but i wouldn't mind the rankings to look like that. it would shut a lot of people up in my opinion.

You're right. It should be ...

05 Jennifer Capriati (http://www.tenniscorner.net/index.php?corner=w;tcaction=players;playerid=CAJ00 1)
06 Serena Williams (http://www.tenniscorner.net/index.php?corner=w;tcaction=players;playerid=WIS00 1)
07 Nadia Petrova (http://www.tenniscorner.net/index.php?corner=w;tcaction=players;playerid=PEN00 1)
07 Venus Williams (http://www.tenniscorner.net/index.php?corner=w;tcaction=players;playerid=WIV00 1)

I didn't worry about it because it didn't impact the point of the thread. Those four players are #5-#8.

How much does it matter?

Let's be real. The reason for seeding Serena and Venus above their WTA ratings, but not moving anyone else, is TV ratings. Like I said, I'm all for seeding by clay court results. Or even past RG's results. But recall that six of the top eight seeds are carrying less than 17 tournaments due to injury. (Henin-Hardenne, Mauresmo, Davenport, Capriati, Williams, Williams) Jennifer Capriati can make a fine arguement she should be seeded ahead of Anastasia Myskina.

If RG seeds ....

01 Henin-Hardenne
02 Mauresmo
03 Williams
04 Williams

... they're doing it for money. They are seeding their four biggest drawing cards highest. They have a right to do that, but in such a case, they aren't seeding on performance.

Judging by clay court results?? This year?? So if Kim Clijsters decided to play, she should not be seeded?? And let's rank Justine (#1 in the world) in the 20s, cos she was ill. :)
Yeah, great idea.
