View Full Version : Who will win the Roland Garros women's title?

TeeRexx
May 16th, 2004, 06:26 PM
Step right up and make your bets. This year's Roland Garros title will possibly be the most wide open that it has been in several years.

Amelie just won the Italian Open, but Capriati came in second beating SERENA in the process.

Venus is playing very well and Davenport may be preparing to make her move as well. Justine is recouperating from a virus and should be at 10% by May 24 also.

Take your pick. You have until May 25 to choose. :)

Can't tell. But I'm pretty sure it's between Amelie, Jen, Serena and Venus depending on her recovery.

In light of recent events (ie. Serena's loss to Capriati and Justine not playing all clay season and Kim's withdrawal), I'm going to say Venus, which is amusing seeing that a couple of weeks ago I was saying to someone that I would by no means ever consider her a favourite for the title.

If VENUS is healthy, considering the way she was playing prior to the injury, i would say she would definitely be the favorite.

It's going to be an american, either Lindsay, Venus, Jenn, or Serena, i think Vee would probably be the fav out of those four, but we just have to see how her ankle is doing, and also depending on If Lindsay wins strasburg, which i think she can do, she will show she is ready to make the move.

I'd like to see one match of Venus' before I make this prediction but assuming her ankle is good to go, She's the favorite in my book. Even if Amelie makes the final and has to deal with Venus, I believe the 4 time grand slam champion will prevail - let's not forget that Mauresmo's last GS final appearance was 5 years ago.

venus :worship: :worship: :hearts: , if her ankle is ok, or else the shock winner could be Chanda   :D she shouldn't feel nervous going into this slam as with coming back from injury, she should play like she has nothing to lose in which will only be her 2nd clay-court tournament of the seaon :bounce: :bounce: also not to mention her great consistency at this slam, reaching the quarters there a few times. i'm sure chanda will also benefit from the fact that there won't be much expectations on her shoulders having been out for the last 3 months.we saw how when the spotlight was fixed firmly on chanda last year at the us open, when she became a favourite when some big names were missing, she didn't perform well. Maybe the biggest factor of all that is in Chanda's favour, is that there is no KIM CLIJSTERS!!!! :o we all know that kim is chanda's achilles heel so she gotta feel confident now. :D

GO CHANDA and VENUS!!!!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: I'd love a French Open final between this two, it would be a win-win situation for me!! :bounce:

I still can't call this one and you know what? I like it this way!. There's no
real favorite this year. Unfortunately the pressure will be more on Amelie
than anyone else because she did so well in Roma, Berlin. And a nation
is pinning their hopes on her again. Oddly enough there's less
pressure on Justine because of Kim not being there. I think if Kim were
in the draw, she would be feeling the pangs of pressure from the Belgian
gutter press. Venus and Serena? It's less about outside pressure, and more
about personal expectations they have inside of themselves. LD and Jenn
do not have any pressure and I expect them to go very deep into the draw
at the very least a solid QF showing. The Russians? They will be feeling the
pressure because that's just the way they are.

I can't decide on this at all. I don't think that there is a real favourite. Amelie, Justine, Serena & Venus are all definitely in there with a good chance. Jennifer & Lindsay have a chance too, but I don't think Lindsay really wants it enough or she'd have played a red clay event or two and I think Jennifer is still slightly off her best. What I'd like to see are two tough three set SFs - Justine Vs Serena & Amelie Vs Venus - and then an Amelie-Justine final. I'm not sure if I'd have a preference either way if that final happened. But, the way things are at the moment, any two of those four could be in the final.

For the first time in a while, though, there are players who have a real chance of causing an upset. I'm thinking of Karolina Sprem, Vera Zvonareva and Emilie Loit in addition to the usual claycourter suspects Conchita Martinez and Patty Schnyder. Things could get very interesting if any of the 'coming off injury' threesome - Venus, Serena, Justine - run into them early (well, given the 32 seeds, not that early) on in the tournament. I don't think any of them are likely to win, but they could cause an upset.

I think it's because a) people on this board have very short memories and so all they're currently thinking about is her SF loss this week and b) because Serena is #1 favourite for suprisingly few posters as most of her fans prefer Venus.

Isn't it funny? All of a sudden, the tour has become much more interesting.

My favourties are:

1-Justine. Even if she hasn't played any warm-up, she's already training, she's confident, and clay is her best surface. And she's won 3 out of the last 4.

2-Venus. Depending how she recovers from her injury, at least she's gained her confidence back.

3-Amelie. If her head holds up.

4-Serena. No matter her form, she always has the intimidation factor.

5-Lindsay. Underrated as usual, her worst hurdle is herself.

6-Capriati. A win at the IO could have meant wonders for her...at lest she beat Serena after 8 consecutive losses.

I'd be shocked if any other wins.

I think Serena. After a loss, she seems to get more hungry. She really wanted to win the Italian Open. Just think about last year, she really wanted to win Roland Garros and look at what she did when she played her next tourney. I dunno. I think that if her knee holds up, she may run all the way to L'arch de triomphe, but Venus could stop her. Jenny has not won a title (without a retirement) since the Oz Open of '02. She's pretty hungry, but in my opinion, she is the 'favorite' with the hardest road ahead of her.

I would, however, be seriously shocked if the final 8 didn't include some combination of:
Amelie
Jennifer
Serena
Venus
Justine (if she plays)
Kuznetsova (if Justine doesn't play)
and Lindsay

My dark horses are:
Karolina
Maria S.
Paola
Conchi
MARTINA (I think she's got a chance, if her draw works out nicely, to make it to the middle of the first week, if not the second)

The last time a Williams Sister played that well on clay, i.e. (Serena 2002) they won the French tournament. I really feel Venus has the belief and the X Factor in her corner, if she can stay healthy and fit during this tournament she could gain the French Open title i 2004 that Chris Evert said would be hers one day in 2002. My pick is VENUS.. After Venus then Mauresmo but Venus is hungry again.

I believe that there are only 3 players who could win the French Open this year.

ms Venus Williams
Amelie Mauresmo
and lastly
Serena Williams

ms Venus Williams is too hungry at the moment and she played won over an opponent who was OVER-POWERING her, her determination says it all. Her attitude in the press conference, her attitude on the courts, they all point out to one thing...the RG Crown and of course that $1,000,000 USD !! She let Amelie escaped this time, but will not, the next time they meet(barring injury).

She had a very good clay season, and her confidence would probably drive her to the title, but there are 2 person standing between her and that TITLE and they are ms VENUS WILLIAMS and HERSELF. She has SOME shots to over-power-out-smart ms Venus Williams in a set or for a few games, sadly ms Venus Williams could raise her level higher and higher and higher till the last ball has been played...!! yikes...!! but then Amelie+ms Venus= ALWAYS one tight set/ or injury.

Serena Williams is always a contender for anything she enters especially if she SERVES goods.

others....... Jenny-Justine-Lindsay-Svetlana-Vera

Jen, thank God that you were able to close that 2nd set out !!!

Justine, as you have become more all-court player, theres a big probability that yer clay-court abilities has lessened a bit, plus no REAL match play on RED CLAY is a must factor to win the TITLE sweetie, as Martina Hingis would say..."the train is moving fast", but then again...who believes her anyway..!!

Vera, Amelia Island-Charleston-Warsaw-Berlin-Rome arent you tired enought??

Svetlana = dark SEAhorse, without people noticing, she's having matchpoints against the lower elites.

There are really only 5 options in my mind and they have a ranking order:

#1 Amelie - she won 2 tourneys in a row (yes one by w/o) but she's having a great clay season and this is home turf for ehr

#2 Justine - yes she hasn't played but she's the defending champ nuff said

#3/4 Venus and Jenn - Well Venus would be higher if she hadn't injured herself and now I just am not sure where to put her but she was doing very well on clay and she won Warsaw. Jenn has been doing really well lately even beating top players.

#5 Lindsay - And again she won Amelia Island and will probably do well this week, but she didn't play against the top players the past few weeks and bascially she hates clay.

Reasons I didn't put people in:
Vera, Sprem, Sveta - have been losing matches to Amelie and Venus lately and I'm not sure they could beat them at this point
Serena - lost to Jenn in an easy two setter

This COULD be the best slam we've seen in a long time. All the top players will be playing except Kim, and all of them have good chances to win it. Amelie has been playing WELL, but I don't think she'll win. She didn't beat Venus, Henin, Lindsay, or Serena to win her titles. She beat a resurgent Jenny, Kuzy, and got a w/o from Venus at the German Open. To me, that doesn't shout 'favorite'. Venus would definately be my pick if she wasn't injured, right now I think she might make the semis but lose in a three-setter? Henin hasnt played at all, which could be a good thing. She'll be fresh - but also rusty. Lindsay has NO chance of winning IMO. She hates clay, and will lose to a Russian in the 3rd or 4th round I think. Serena, hmm. She could most definately win, her game clicks in big tournaments, and she doesn't have much pressure on her. Jennifer is another one I think could win. She's picking up her game and has shown by beating Serena that maybe her mental game is falling in to place. However, I could also see Jenn losing easily to someone like Vera again.

If I had to rank my picks, they'd be:

1/2. Serena/Jenn
3. Venus
4. Justine
5. Amelie
6. Lindsay

In order of who i think is fav.

Venus Looking very good on clay, although injuries may set her back.....again

Justine Only a fool would rule the defending champion out of her fav slam. If she gets through one or two rounds she will become fav.

Amelie Would put her first, as she is in the best form. But she is so unpredictable, and struggles against some top players.

Jen Looking more like her old self.

Don't know about the rest, Serena is not that good on clay, maybe a few Russians can spring a surprise.

This is a tough one for me. I'd like to see Amelie win it. Finally, get a slam and I'm sure she'd love to win one in France. On the other hand, Venus has been looking great on clay and between the two of them Venus tends to be a bit tougher mentally when the pressure is on. So, I'll pick Venus as my fave to win, but I'm still going to cheer Amelie on

The top player's records on clay during the past two years:
Justine: 23-2
Venus: 21-2
Kim: 20-2 (add a loss if you want to count the pre-match retirement at Berlin)
Amelie: 35-5
Serena: 18-5

Pretty much spells it out clearly, huh? (If you consider that without her FO run last year, Serena would be 11-5, it's kinda shocking)

Justine's stats are the most impressive : Justine beat Serena and Clijsters twice, Amelie and Seles once ; she didn't play this year, and was ill when she lost to Mauresmo (which doesn't mean she would have won if she was fit, but ...) :worship:
Venus's stats are a bit less impressive, because she didn't beat any great players ! But it's impressive too ! :)
Same for Mauresmo, because she didn't beat great players in the last 2 years on clay, except Capriati and Serena, and got totally destroyed by Serena at RG ! :)

I would say that the title is between a fit Justine and a fit Venus, maybe Mauresmo and Serena. If Justine had a good preparation, she would be the very favourite!
Don't count out Serena : when she's on she's very impressive (just look at the quarters against Mauresmo last year !)

This year's RG seems very interesting though Kim is not in the field !

I think Venus may win.

I know she has not beaten a top 10 player this year, but during her 2 titles and March to the Final at Berlin she was showing a lot of good signs from what i have heard.

i.e

Copnfidence was back
Game was flowing etc etc

Hopefully the ankle injury was not to bad

WHen she returns hopefully her momentum has not been ruined.

But most importantly if she is not ready, don't play. Withdraw and return for Wimbledon.

Marcus1979
May 20th, 2004, 08:26 AM
Serena has had not much clay preparation compared to Venus and Mauresmo maybe that could be a issue.

JHH does not need much preparation on clay since Clay is her best surface its the same as the Sisters never play at leadup Grass tournaments as they don't really need it.

Pretty interesting scenario, at last we re getting a surprising Slam!:D

I still put my money on Venus to win it, I think she can be ready 100% healthy for the Open, if it would be bad she would ve withdrawn already.

Amelie is in a very impressive form, she is a contender.

Henin and Serena can't be counted out, they are great players and I put them above Amelie.

If MOMO can get her head together she will win. However, thats a big IF based on history.

The next big threats are Venus Justine Serena and Jen all on equal standing.

R U trying to say something missy:fiery: BTW, you should make a prediction *Venus* as your predictions have been spot on in recent memory:D
Roland Garros has never been favourable to all the big guns...there's always an upset...the last top seed to win was Steffi Graf in 96 i believe...not looking favourable for Henin...

who i want to win and who i think will win are people i like...if this wasn't a public poll i would vote (when it comes to tennis, i am superstitious), and if it wasn't such a big tournament i would predict...

oh fuck it

providing they're on opposite sides of the draw, i actually might put a lil wager on another all Williams final

my second prediction would be Venus vs Amelie

and i reckon only 4 top 8 seeds will get to the quarters
