View Full Version : Clijsters and Capriati: Do they have the "C" word in common?

After Clijster's loss to SERENA at the AO final and Capriati's loss to VENUS in a nail biter in Florida and severl close losses to SERENA and now the recent loss to Mauresmo, has the dreaded "c" word resurfaced to plague Jenn as it has Clijsters?

And that word is clearly choke. Jenn had several match points against Amelie, but was never able to capitalize on any of them during the IO final.

Maybe this loss could be attributed to not being match tough, but this has now become a pattern and Cap seems to be unable to win close matches of late.

This could be a big problem for the Italian when she goes into Paris in a week.

i dont want to say that they are chokers but it looks like it, however jen held on yesterday against serena after serena staged a comeback.

It is not like she had 10 match points it was only one!!! She had her chance to take and did not but who cares she played great and is back in the best form she has been in for awhile!!!

jen did not choke, she has made amazing progress the past two weeks with her new coach and is playing more confidently.....yes she had her chances in the final today, however, mauresmo has been playing the best clay court tennis, and jen took her to three sets and a final tiebreak...that's not choking

Jenn had the match point and several break point opportunities that she failed to capitalize on in the match. It was a good match, but future hall of famers are expected not to blow match points in finals or to lose control of a match in which they have a sizeable lead.

sizeable lead is more than one break of serve in my opinion but lets relax, it's over, it's just a game (very passion I admit , but still only a game, not a life :))

I don't think calling Capriati a choker is really valid - Sure she's lost some nailbiters - today against Amelie, the Miami final with Venus, the US Open semi with Justine...But she's certainly won her fair share of close ones too. You can't win everything, and when things are that close it's anyone's match. She's had her wins and her losses, so I wouldn't label her a choker. :)

Good points, but since 2000, Jenn has lost in aproximately 11 finals and 18 semifinal matches, many of which were closely contested matches including a round of 16 match to Kournikova in 2000 ( no future Hall of Famer wants a loss to Anna on their record :) ).

So, based on Jenn's prior record is why I made my initial statement.

We've seen JenCap choke loads of times before but she has also held it together to win major titles so you can't ever count her out.

The fact that she held it together to close out the likes of Serena yesterday is a more promising sign than a close loss to Amelie today (especially if you consider how the scoreline against Amelie last week.)

Well I guess it just depends on how you look at things - In my honest opinion, a lot of the close matches Jennifer has lost, she didn't really 'choke'. She just wasn't the better player. When Jennifer was at her very best, she was winning most of the close ones, and in the past year and a half she's been on the short end of the stick in most cases - Some of it probably is mental, but I think that she just hasn't been playing as well. She's beaten most of the players she should beat, but she's also not usually beating the ones higher than her either, which says a lot. The player that won 3 grand slams had not been present at those matches, a lot more sloppy, and also more tenative with being aggressive at the right moments too.

oh randy, why are you even reasoning with this teerexx guy? why waste your intellect on him?

he can pretend all he wants but we KNOW this thread is a reaction to cappy beating serena yesterday. little tee just can't get over it and handle it like an adult so he has to make some sort of jab at cappy, whether said jabs are backed up by actual facts or not. yeah cappy has choked. who the fuck hasn't?? saying that a lot of her matches were close means she's a choker? surely you are smarter than that line shows?

bashing or bringing down cappy has been the favorite activity of some williams fans in the past 24 hours. the mature ones smile and move on. the children have to act like, well, children, and make themselves known.

and PLEASE for gods sake tee dont even deny that this is a reaction to the semi's. spare us the cop out. you can be tacky and immature but please be a man and if you're gonna say something stupid then don't chicken out and pretend it's about something else.

what is the point of this thread anyway? do you really think it will make cappy look stupid more than it makes YOU look stupid? it's all so transparent i can walk right through it.

Jen did choke at the USO 2003 against H-H. However, I think she is getting better. When she was winning everything everyone use to choke against her except Venus. Martina, Kim, Justine, Serena, Amelie all use to fall to Capriati but everyone has gotten better now and they are not scared of Jen. It makes for good matches and more competition so that's a good thing.

I am no fan of Jen at all, but she did a good job this week.

You just responded correctly to my post.

bashing or bringing down cappy has been the favorite activity of some williams fans in the past 24 hours. the mature ones smile and move on. the children have to act like, well, children, and make themselves known.

No, that is not my favorite occupation or even a remote pastime. I am just following an established pattern and drawing an intelligent analysis.

No, this post is an analyst of the FINALS, Cap did not choke in the semis.

No, this post is merely a quantified analysis on my part of a tennis match that was played. No more, no less.

Also, if your writing ability is any indication of your intelligence, then I can see why you have such difficulty in logic and comprehension.

Good bye. :wavey:

Not that it matters much, but could you check the facts before you post?

Justine lost to Jenni only once (+1 retirement), how that can be "used to fall"??

Amélie was serving well, but on that particular point it really did not matter coz it was the longest rally of the match (and a breathtaking one). :p

She Choked!!!!

She always chokes, She has a choking career since the last slam she won. She'll always be a chocker until she Wins a tournament.

She's a shadow of her former self and the game has passed her by. So what she gets lucky every now and then.

I can't say a three-time GS winner chokes. Jenn plays a very conservative syle of tennis. She forces you to beat her, but she leaves you room to beat her. If you can paint the lines.

Good point, but one of those GS titles was won against a player, named in this thread, who has the unfortunate rep of choking and another title was won because the inbred Aussies did not raise the roof over the courts and turn on the AC and her opponent suffered from heat exhaustion as a result of their incompetence.

While Kim did choke away the French and US open finals, I thought that @ the Aussie Open she was just outplayed and it was Justine who was choking a little; until that easy shot she hit out next to the net.

Jennifer called herself a CHOCKER in 2002. Semifinals against Serena. I think her exact words were "You're Fucking Choking!!"

But nevertheless, all players are faced with that at some point in their career. Today not being one of those for Jennifer.

If you didn't see the match you shouldn't comment. If you did, you need to evaluate what choking is or isn't.

I have to disagree with you regarding the AO final against SERENA because Kim clearly had the match in hand with a 5:1 lead.
