It is potentially one of the better Grand Slams we have had in a long time, since Wimbledon 2003 (1 year is a long time :p ). Amélie, Jen, Venus, Serena, Lindsay, Sveta, Vera and K-Lina are all in good form. Justine's form is uncertain, but we can never count her out. Hopefully, RG 2004 lives up to its potential!

isnt it funny how just a week ago we all thought it would be a terrible slam due to lack of top players or lack of health or match fitness of top players. and now cappers and mauresmo are playing great, venus has been playing well, serena is playing ok and as you mentioned kuznetsova and sprem are in good form.

Juts wait untill we'll have an all-williams final again.
Then everybody will say it's a pity both belgians weren't there.

I'm still waiting for the big four on form in the same GS.
Although it's great news Mauresmo,Capriati and others are picking up their form too.

Yep this years tournament should be one of the best, shame Kim isnt there  , but i expect serena, justine, jenn or venus to do well. Mauresmo will get too scared like she always does in front of her home crowd, all we need is a half determined player and she will fall b4 the semi's  . Maybe some of the Russians could make a good run, Kuzy and Vera have the best chances

With the majority of the top players ready to compete and no over-whelming favorite going into Paris, I agree that this years' French Open has the potential to be highly contested and exciting two weeks.

Sometimes lossing can be a blessing and in Serena's case I hope that prooves to be true. You know that going into Paris she's going to be more pumped and I think she's also going into Paris better prepared. Having lost to Jennifer, she wont under estimate the rest of the field and now she has an idea of what to work on and enough time to fix it before RG starts.

I really wish Jennifer would have won Rome (after beating Serena) it would have made things even that much more exciting, but I'm sure the win over Serena combined with making it to the finals should give her some much needed confidence.

Out of the six Tier 1 tournaments played so far this year Mauresmo is the only top player to have won two of them. I'm not sure if this actually helps her when it comes to the slams, particularly the French, but if she can control her nerves she should at least feel confident enough in her tennis to have a nice two weeks.

If healthy I guess the favorite (on paper) would probably be Venus (if not MoMo) and it's been a long time counting since Venus has won a slam so the hunger in her will push her a long ways toward her French Open goal.

Even though Justine hasn't played in some time and will no doubt be a little rusty, I think her virus can actually work to her favor. If she were healthy and didn't win any of the events leading to the French it could have really played with her confidence and had she won those tournaments there would be tremendous pressure on her to defend. Since she's really not tournament "tuff" I think all the pressure is lifted from her. She's in a nice position to just concentrate on playing some really good ball.

Lindsay, Sveta, and K-lina are all potential threats and considering all the x-factors at play they have to be viewed as real contenders.

The only missing piece to a GREAT French Open is Kim Clijsters... I really wish she hadn't come back too early and that she would've been able to play RG cuz a grandslam without last years finalist is a grandslam missing something (IMO).

I'm hoping for a Jennifer-Serena final. They have arguably the best rivalry going and with Jen scoring the last win it should make for an interesting match. They've never played in the final of GrandSlam and for their rivalry to really go down as a great rivalry they have to play a few slam finals- so why not this years FO??

LET'S GO SERENA!!!!!!!!

If S and V don't make the final again...would you consider it worse than last year?

I hope Roland Garros is a good major. I don't think there has been a "good" major since the 2002 Australian Open (in terms of quality of matches. Both semis were very high quality...and the finals :worship: )

so will people rate lindsay as a better chance at RG if she wins strasbourg or will your thoughts on her chances not change?

LindsayRocks89
May 17th, 2004, 04:21 AM
well Lindsay was playing really well on green clay until she just had an off day aganist Patty, its been a few weeks, and if she wins strasbourg i think she will be one of the top favs, if she doesnt win i still think she will be a fav anyways :p

Gowza
May 17th, 2004, 04:24 AM
obviously she will be a fav no matter what but winning strasbourg could give her more confidence on clay plus she would have more match practice on clay.

It's been a long while since there hasn't been a clear favorite going into a slam. I have a feeling the two players in the finals will be previous slam winners, but maybe a new combination...

I think Venus and Serena will be in the final if one opposite sides if they both make the SF.

i think venus was playing the best out of the top players but getting that ankle injury she hasnt played so she may have dropped some form. so venus is unpredictable for the moment imo. i think capriati is playing better than mauresmo (or did in the last tournament) but she is still having a problem with closing out the tight 3 setters. mauresmo is playing the next best but she is suspect at RG, she never gets as far as she should. with capriati beating serena in straight sets and having not beaten her in 8 previous tries even with these players problems that face them i cant put serena ahead of them because i think mauresmo and capriati are playing a lot better than her.

the thing about these players is that if they get through the 1st and 2nd round matches they are very likely to go far.

my top 4 favs:
1)venus
2)mauresmo
3)capriati
4)serena

its tough to pick between venus, mauresmo and capriati but i think if venus is playing well she will beat them even with the form they have with venus it is just whether she has dropped form or not.

Hopefully everybody who's been hot will keep their form and we will get a full set of awesome QFs. Last time that happened at a slam was last year's wimbledon, where you had Serena-Capriati, Venus-Davenport, Justine-Sveta, and Clijsters-Farina Elia (who was having a crazy hot streak according to some people who saw her play, didn't see myself).

Well I'm definitely rooting for the seeds to hold their positioning cuz I'm desperate to see some really good quality matches between the top players... I really don't want any upsets!!! I hope that the last 8 standing are Serena, Venus, Lindsay, MoMo, Justine, Jennifer, Svetlana, and one of the young guns in there would be nice...someone like K-Lina, Myskina, Golovin, or Vera.
