View Full Version : Is Justine the most humourless player in the tour?

I can't think of any other player who is more serious. Her interviews are as dry as a twig in a desert. Can you think of a more humourless player? ;)

Ok. I don't know? Patty? I'll give you this one. ;) Justine has been
getting a tad better; but it always comes off like a bad episode of a
Belgian Cop drama in that big scene where they drag some punk in and
yell at him/her..

"So! Where did you f**king hide the Cocaine! Tell us!!!"- Bad Cop

No,Justine can't laugh..She doesn't have any fun,nor does she have a life. She's just one sick player who does nothing else but thinking, staying serious and training as hard as she can.
Her interviews are boring as hell, certainly the French ones...Really I can't believe how some people can actually support her.

You said it,but she's making progress.Remember the IW-interview:"He's trying to give me a hard time" ---->whole room starts to laugh :rolls:
Or after her semi in IW and the interview with pam Shriver afterwoods, they're were FFW the match and then Justine says:"I'm very fast on court" :rolls:

Q. You've been on Tour a few years now and have seen Kournikova's game. She's a person who has a great number of outside interests other than tennis. Do you suspect that maybe those outside interests are keeping her from achieving her best tennis on the Tour?

JUSTINE HENIN: I think I am here to play tennis, is the best important in my life. I think she's a really nice girl. She likes her look, and everybody likes her look. But I am not here to do cinema. I am here to play tennis and I think that's the best important.

Her French ones are boring too? I would've thought at least those'd be humourous.

I know sometimes it's hard to make interviews funny when you're speaking another language. Justine's English is pretty good, but hopefully when she gets better and expands her vocab. her interviews'll be funnier.

Q. In the final, you'll get probably Venus, although Lindsay is hanging in there. You haven't beaten either one of them.

JUSTINE HENIN: I beat already Venus Williams, okay?

Q. I'm sorry.

JUSTINE HENIN: That's okay. This year in Berlin. That was funny too! :)

Obviously you don't know too many players nor Justine well enough. Me either, but how can you say she's the least humourous player on the tour? Her first language ain't English and most of her interivews (actually all of them that we can understand) are done in English. I can think of a whole lot of ppl who have similar personalities to hers. Not that I know her personality all too well.

Hey, I don't buy this "she is funny in her native language but she can't be in other languages" argument. There are some personalities that are not buried by using other languages and humour is one of them. Look at the most funniest personalities of ATP tour for example: Marat and Goran speak such a broken English, but their charm shines through the language barrier.

i think Justine is pretty funny actually and rather bright in interviews - that comment after she beat Kournikova ("she likes her look, everbody likes her look, but i'm not here to do cinema") at the USO remains a classic.

for me the most boring players to read interviews with are, you guessed it, the Williams sisters. Although they bored me so much that i haven't read any of their interviews for a long time, and maybe they've gotten better.

I don't think Justine is particularly humourless. She's certainly not got the sort of charm that Goran Ivanisevic and a few others do, but I don't think she's much more humourless than Kim/Amelie/Lindsay/Nastya/Nadia/other top players.

Gotta agree with you there. Her post match interviews are rather dull and reserved, probably because she's busy evading questions of personal nature and has become defensive, which imo is understandable.

Off the court, these ladies sure have a life of their own. And goodness about them. Anna hugs Sanchez-Vicario while sharing a laugh with her. Justine smiles from ear to ear when she's with young ones in her charities. :)

It's a knee slapper ain't it? They go out of their way to pin point
every tiny detail or detritus. Hell, even Serena does it with her
going out of the way to "act" as if she doesn't know who or what

by telling willing journalists that other people tell her she's still #1.

Actually, Justine did say one of the funniest things I've ever heard on sports television. After a match, Pam Shriver and MaryJoe were interviewing Justine at courtside. While replaying a point on a televison moniter, the director screwed up and ran the point in a "fast forward" mode. Pam had been talking about Justine's great mobility, and while watching the super speeded up re-play Justine laughed and said "wow, I really *am* fast around the court."

Please don't blame Serena for This. The WTA and Octagon don't market "The Little Engine That Could" very well, esp. in the U.S. Add that most American TENNIS FANS couldn't find Belgium on a map if you spotted Them The "Bel" :p and its no wonder They Tell Serena That. Well...you can't say Pierre Yves doesn't have any sort of
humour. How cool of a husband can he be letting wife have
this relationship with Pat, and to think that he's been even
letting them pay for all of this under the "professional training
fee's"?. It must be kind of weird for him; but thank goodness
Pierre Yves is so understanding. I do have to admit that when
she wins events and gives speeches and mentions Pat's name
along with his own as people she would like to dedicate her
title to, it must make him cringe! ;)
