View Full Version : Are all the top players now on an even keel?

At the beginning of 2003, the sisters were way ahead of everyone else. At the beginning of this year the belgians were. But now because of injuries and illnesses could we say on any given day all the top players could beat each other regardless of surface and anyone of them come out on top. By the top players I mean the belgians. the williams, jen, lindsay and amelie.
The belgians used last year to catch up and might have wiped the floor with the williams early in the year but misfortune also caught up with them and has slowed them down.
Seriously I don't think any of those seven players can be dominant over the others. It will probably take a few more months for any two to pull away?
Anyone else think the same?

No.

First of all, V&S weren't REALLY beating everyone else ALL the time. It just seemed that ways cause, they just made all the slam finals. If you check, you'll find that Kim had a few wins over Venus, and Justine had a couple over Serena.

The matches that broke pattern were Jenn over Serena, and Amelie over Venus.

But Amelie over Venus was a sprained ankle. Amelie's only other 'win' over VEnus was walkover.

I'd still go with Venus over Lindsay, Jenn or Justine.
Kim's 50/50, and Serena is a nightmare.
Serena I'd say 50/50 with Justine, but she'll beat anybody else.

But again, that's pretty much how things were in 2002.

Please note, I'm talking about Venus over this clay season. Inthe winter, she was losing long before she ever HAD to face Lindsay or Kim or Amelie or Justine or Jenn.

Until they all are back and playing each other again, there's no way to tell.

I think Serena Sorta Said Sorry To This Theory in Key Biscayne, Blowing ppl Away After An 8 month layoff. (Venus can't just "flip the switch" as quickly, but Has Had a great ova-all season on clay, Far From her favorite surface).

:haha: :haha:

You jest, yes? Jennifer ahead of Amélie?

Lindsay and Jennifer always linger around these discussions simply on the basis of what they were three or four years ago. Lindsay's still capable of very good tennis, but really - neither are any greater threats to win Slams than anyone else out of the Williams-Belgium-Amélie nexus. I'd sooner put money on Sveta or even Sharapova :haha:

Jennifer, Lindsay could. Wrong tense.

Past glories count for nothing. Amélie is by far the likelier to win a Slam in the future. Also a LOT more talented than Capriati.

I think that as the Williamses are reaching their top form and getting their match rythm back, it´s gonna be more of the same.

Serena and Venus are the best and then after that it´s the Belgians...Justine should do fine on clay and Kim should do fine on indoors....the other surfaces are Williams surfaces and not gonna change anytime soon.

i agree that the field is wide open now..
William Sisters' power is not longer that imitidating as b4...
Kim n Justine is beginnin to fall to injuries
Lindsay n Jenn refuse to throw in the towel yet
Kuznetsova n Sharapova the up-n-comin GS contenders....

Coming off her Berlin and Rome titles (and with Linzi & the Belgians out) Momo has a Serious Shot This Time. Especially as the W/S have been "vulnerable" inbetween spectacular play after '03, a year both subpar (for them) and ruined by family tragedy and physical injury.

Now 2 slams in a year as a down year.....hmmm, more than many players win in their whole careers.

Seriously, though, I still that Serena at her best is a notch above anyone else even at their best.

It is so....but she isn´t at her best yet. Has shown glimpses, but the rust is evident...
