This is not a bashing thread. I am just wondering whether anyone notice Nadia is no. 6 in the world right now and she is yet to win a title. It seems like no one is talking about it (compare to Anna K).

I don't mean to be demeaning, but is the ranking right now really meant nothing? I mean if you ask me ( a casual-frequent) tennis fan what are the highlights of Nadia achievement during the last 12 months, the only one come on top of my head is her semifinal in FO last year.

So the question, does she deserve her no. 6 ranking. Is Anna unjustifiably being tormented by the media when she is 8 in the world and had no titles. Do you thinK Nadia will win a title this year?

I think that her ranking is right where it should be. She did good at RG and rightfully so, she still have those points to defend. They are still there and right now, she is number 6 in the world. Soon enough she will win a title.

she will win a title. just needs to stay healthy and play the right events (TIER V anyone?)

The problem I have is that we say Anna gonna win a title back in 2000, she is good enough to do that. But when you are in the top 10, entering tier 5 events is just not realistic, will she fell prey to Anna syndrome again?

I know you are not trying to bash Anna wong...but Anna-syndrome? C'mon.

Anyway...Her ranking is quite justified in my belief...like someone said before...let's see if she can defend her RG points....if she can...she's good for the long haul.

I think people harp on a player's lack of tournament wins a bit too much. For example, what's more impressive: getting to the semifinals of a Grand Slam or winning a Tier IV tournament? I happen to think that the former is much more impressive. I felt bad for Anna K when she was getting so much flak because her final appearances at Tier I events were seemingly forgotten in order to just bash her. As for Nadia, of course she deserves her ranking. It's not like someone made a subjective decision to place her there (a la figure skating); her points put here there, pure and simple. Just because you don't happen to remember her good results (besides the French) doesn't mean that she didn't have any.

Simple. Because Anna is very very pretty and Nadia
and yes she deserves her ranking.

well, I guess you can say that, maybe a little bit direct. This is actually an interesting issue because, maybe Anna will just be picked on no matter what she achieve becuase of the media frenzy at that time.

No one talks about it because Nadia doesn't get Anna's hype and Nadia hasn't been in the top 10 that long without a win.

Casual tennis fans would have no idea of most of the top 10 players records - they wouldn't know who Dementieva, Momo, Myskina or Petrova have beaten to get their ranking and probably imagine Lindsay and jennifer have completely different records of tournament wins and top player victories than they do have. They probably also don't know how many wins Justine and kim have had and assume that Serena and venus have either been out for ever or have far more wins over the last year than they have actually achieved.

They also don't understand that rankings reflect wins and opponents beaten and that winning may actually be less of an achievement than taking out a top player.

It's not a matter of if she deserves it. Obviously she does. She's earned it playing racking up enough points to get there. But as far as she's good enough a player to be consistently reckoned with that ranking is another story. I'm to be honestly quite surprised how high she's ranked right now. It's not because she hasn't won a title but I don't have the impression about her performance that she's done enough to be ranked that high. But it doesn't take away nothing from her achievements. I just think her ranking is inflated and there're a few players ranked bellow her that are more then capable of taking her out on any given day. So many girls have been injured the past year and plus the ranking system doesn't reflect the players' abilities as accurately as it's supposed to, pre much every player's ranking is inflated these days.
I think if all the players were healthy and could play at their normal levels, the rankings would go like this

1. Amy Frazier
2. Ncole Pratt
3. Shinobu Asagoe
4. Francesca Schiabone
5. Rita Grande
6. Martina Navratilove.

I think Nadia is one of the few Russians that you know can challenge and beat all the top players

Nadia deserved it because ranking is ranking, simple as that. Same with Anna.

Nadia undoubtly deserves it. She has had a stellar past 12 months and was having a great 2004 untill her shocking loss in Rome ;)

She will win a title, and who frankly cares if it's a Tier V. A title is a title :p

The difference is Anna has such a high profile for a tennis player who never accomplished much. Nadia has a high ranking just like Elena D did till she won her 3 titles last year. Titles will come.
