in '01, after beating up the entire tour all spring long, Momo lost in the first round of the French to perennial WTA powerhouse  Jana Kandarr in straight sets, cementing her reputation as the most mentally weak of the game's top players. Will it happen again this year?

IMO she goes into RG every year playing to her potential.

Let's hope not. Gotta improve her serve because she was definitely NOT serving well against Vera today.

However, the French is a whole different ballgame for Amélie and anything can happen.

Hopefully Mauresmo's learned from 01 and can handle those emotions a little better now.

uhum.....nice game and all, but as long as she can´t control her nerves...can´t see her winning with a Juju, Venus, Serena in the draw...

Yeah, every year it's the same : last year she lost to Justine at Berlin and to Kim at Rome , and Justine and Kim aren't playing those tournies this year.

I was thinking the same thing:2001 runing in my head all over again...

The key point is that she's fit.

That's all that matters - if she's healthy she's always got a shot at winning the French, irrespective of how well she's playing beforehand.

Anyway, in 2001 she had a much better string of results coming in but had probably peaked too soon (seeing the way she played against Dokic in Rome final.)

She's never played up to her potential at RG, but she's been getting slightly better every year since 2001.. and it wouldn't be the first time someone had made progress mentally.

And neither juju, serena or venus seems to be 100%.. but we'll see. Certainly Amelie's best chance ever.

I hope Amelie down plays her chances to the French media.Don't go blabbing to the media that she is sure she can win or any other stupid, premature comments.Imo,thats what ends up making her such a basket case...she starts to feel the pressure from "French fans" expectations. :o

Just play it cool this year.In other words: shhhh...don't give interviews before RG.

Amelie has a bad history in RG. 2001 was just a disaster. But she has been doing well, reaching QF last year, (although she lost real bad to Serena)

I think it is a matter of confidence, maybe if she have the win in rome, she can finally believe that she is the one to beat on clay no matter whether she is playing in Paris or any place else.

I didn't see her match against Vera but Amelie didn't serve to well? Is that the case?

From the news on the Rome site

"Despite the lack of pressure Amelie`s service game again looked weak on Saturday, as it has done throughout the tournament. She seemed more likely to break her opponent`s serve than to hold her own - a problem she will not want to take to tomorrow`s final."

She's always struggling with her serve (much to my frustration).

Maybe one of her many injuries are acting up again, and thats preventing her from serving better.

She served pretty well against Conchita I thought. A couple of second serve aces as well (although they could just as easily have been double faults.)

She isnt playing as well this year as in 2001. Shes struggled with players she should beat in straight sets, like Schiavone and Farina, so i dont think shes at that form yet.

I think she's mentally tougher now and more confident. This year's Roland Garros is really her title to win, I think, unless she comes across Lindsay or Venus - although she's unfortunately a question mark at this point.

I say we should wait for Roland Garros before starting to speculate. Yes, she has folded under pressure in previous years, but perhaps (and hopefully) this year will be different  ;)

I refuse to think about that. Instead, I like to think she's got mentally stronger and won't melt under pressure. ;)

I think if Momo wins tomorrow she will lose early at the French, because there will be to much pressure put on her. And we all know she does not handle pressure well when it comes to grandslams.

I hope it won't happen again. In '01 I almost sent to the hospital after her loss.. please Momo, don't do it to me again!!

Well, you never know..I never thought Justine would be as mentally strong she is now.And she used quite...euhm..what's the word..fragile...Actually let's just say the truth:she was a big time C-H-O-K-E-R....So who knows, maybe Amelie will follow Justine's example and 'll become one though cookie :)
