I borrowed this book all about the best in sports and I saw something stunning!!!!

The year end ranking of 1996!!!

1. Steffi Graf
2. Monica Seles
3. Jana Novotna
4. Lindsay Davenport
5. Martina Hingis
6. Stephanie de Ville
7. Tamarine Tanasugarn
8. Anke Huber
9. Conchita Martinez
10. Julie Halard-Decugis

Tammy at number 7????!!!! I was so shocked and I looked at it again and again, it was there!!! the rest of the years seemed reasonable but Tammy being in the top 10 in 1996 sound incredible. However, something hit me.

Maybe this wasn't the end of the year rankings, but rather the race to the championships. But could anyone verify this for me please??? thanks!!!! :bounce:

Didn't Martina Hingis end 1996 at #4 after reaching the Chase finals. I remember that, because she was seeded #4 at the 1997 Australian Open. Aranxta was #2 and Steffi #1 and Conchita #3. I know that would have been possible anyways, with the withdrawl of Monica and Novotna not playing, but I seem to remember her finishing #4....

I think Novotna must just have edged her by winning three consecutive tournaments in a row at the end of the year. Conchita I think was generally more consistent throughout the whole year as well - Martina's results only really took off at the end of the year from what I remember (aside from beating Gaby in Tokyo  and the Rome final.)

It's an error. It's suppose to be Kimiko Date's name. What they did is
because she didn't play the final events in Europe, they just knocked
her name out because she officially retired in Japan, and not
at a tour event!

Hingis was #6 at the end of the year, she was seeded 4th at the AO because Monica and Jana were not playing.

The race at the end of every year is the same as the year end rankings.

By the end of the year the race is over and they would be the same.

If you want to go deeper you have to decide whether the race is to the end of the year or as it says a race to get into the end of year chmpionships which means it ended earlier. In the sense that the race is to the end of year champs, your score after the cut-out date for qualifying for the championships wouldn't actually be in the race total but if you were ranked 75 it wouldn't change anything as no one near you in the rankings would get to the championships and get points. if you play somewhere else at the very end of the season there is a logical problem if the race ended before that so most people would assume the race went on to the end of the year and would therefore be the same as the end of the year rankings.

Maybe it was the race to the champs from the beginning of the year that's all. Tammy probably had a good result in a pre-AO event and that's what propelled her in the top10 of the race. I don't get why Graf could be number one, though.. And I just checked and it's impossible. Tammy did not play in 1996 until June in Birmingham, so it's probably just a mistake.

I'm not sure the WTA did proper Race rankings back in 1996. Between 1996 and 1997 the way the rankings worked changed, so what you may have is a list someone made to show how people would be ranked under different systems, and the author of the book has mistakenly taken this to be the true end-of-year rankings.

Stephanie De Ville was ranked down in the 70s in the 1996 end-of-year rankings.

Strange... the people who wrote that book must have been on something.

The only thing I can think of is that could possibly be mentioning who they think would be an up-and-coming player...

Although, de Ville only had 1 decent tournament in her entire career.
