After the success of organizing the 10th Wismilak International in 2003, the tournament management today announces names of WTA top players that will be competing in Wismilak International 2004 (WI 2004). Accompanied by Wismilak International Bali’s Spokesperson, Mr. Ronald Walla and Mr. Stephanus HK, Operation Manager, Tournament Director, Kevin Livesey revealed that top players such as Chanda Rubin (USA/WTA 13), Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS/WTA 12), Ai Sugiyama (JPN/WTA 11), Nadia Petrova (RUS/WTA 6), Jelena Dokic (SCG/WTA 24) and Conchita Martinez (ESP/WTA 18), are among the serious competitors in WI 2004 who have entered and are confirmed for this years tournament.

Livesey added that in addition to the above players negotiations are on going with Amelie Mauresmo (FRA/WTA 3) and Elena Dementieva (RUS/WTA 10) – 2003 Singles Champion. Both players have had injury problems this year and will not make any final decision before the French Open. Livesey also stated that there is an excellent chance of the popular Arantxa Sanchez returning to Bali to play doubles. And , of course, there is also Angie Widjaja who has not had the best of times recently but I sure will make every effort to be up for the event in Bali.

“I have recently returned from Miami where I met several players and their agents and all have shown a great deal of interest in the Wismilak International Bali. Many players, coaches and managers have heard that the tournament has grown over the past few years to one of the best organized tournaments on the calendar and it seems that everyone wants to come to Bali and with the players that we have already mentioned this could be the strongest field in the history of the tournament,” stated Livesey.

Livesey added, ”it is worth noting that only players named on the WTA Tour Gold and Silver exempt list can enter this early. Under a new rule that was introduced last year entry for the remainder of the players can only be made after the French Open in June”.

Wismilak International Bali 2004 will be held on the tennis courts of the Grand Hyatt Bali starting from September 12, 2004 to September 19, 2004. This year there will be 2 (two) pre-qualifying tournaments. The first will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 4-8 August 2004 and the second will be in Surabaya, Indonesia, from 11-15 August 2004. The top 3 (three) players from both the pre qualifying tournaments will win wild card entry into the two (2) WTA tournaments that are Wismilak International and Volvo Open. The 1st place winner will receive a singles main draw wild card into both Wismilak International Bali and the Volvo Women’s Open, Thailand and the 2nd & 3rd place players will receive singles wild card entry into both tournaments qualifying draw.

Ronald Walla confirms that the Wismilak International Bali 2004 will be spectacular. “I’m hoping to see 3 (three) past Champions competing in the tournament. I’m sure that tennis fans would love to watch Dementieva, Kuznetsova and Angie Widjaja playing in the greatest Women’s tennis event in South East Asia,” he added.

Today is also the commencement of Wismilak International LKJOR (Lomba Karya Jurnalistik Olahraga) that was greatly responded by sport journalists last year. Approximately 40 journalists participated in last year’s LKJOR.
