Navratilova eyes Wimbledon

Martina Navratilova has admitted she could go for a 10th Wimbledon singles title this year at the age of 47.
Navratilova hinted that a good display at the French Open might see her make a comeback in the singles at SW19.

"I'm taking it one tournament at a time but it's certainly a possibility. We'll just see what happens, how I feel, how I do and take it from there," she said.

"If I think it can help my doubles, then I will play. If I think it will hinder the doubles, then I won't play."

Navratilova made her singles comeback at Amelia Island last month, and the French Open will be her first Grand Slam singles action for 10 years.

It is 20 years since she won the second of her two titles at Roland Garros, and her last singles match there was in 1994, when she lost in the first round.

There's no need for anyone to know where I will be practising next week

Martina Navratilova
She played her last Grand Slam singles match at Wimbledon later that year, losing to Conchita Martinez in the final.

Navratilova holds the record for Wimbledon women's singles titles, but has made it clear her priority is the doubles events.

She teamed up with Leander Paes in the mixed doubles last year to win her 20th Wimbledon title.

"Just practising for singles helps my doubles. I want to get more match play. This is one way to do it," she said.

Navratilova would not reveal where she will spend time preparing for the French Open.

"I want to keep it quiet. I'll be practising on clay in Europe," she said.

"Not that it's a big secret, but there's no need for anyone to know where I will be next week."

Ananova

Martina Navratilova has not ruled out the possibility of returning to play in the singles at Wimbledon this year.

The 47-year-old holds the record for women's singles titles, having won 167 events in her career and Wimbledon nine times. She has not taken part in the singles of a Grand Slam event for 10 years, but has been handed a wild card entry to the French Open.

"I am taking it one tournament at a time, but it (Wimbledon) certainly is a possibility," she said. "We will just see what happens, how I feel, how I do and take it from there."

She added: "If I think it can help my doubles, then I will play. If I think it will hinder the doubles, then I won't play. It is as simple as that."

Unless the French Open experience turns out to be a disaster, I think that she will play Wimbledon for sure.

It would be great for her to play Wimbly(=) again, but I don't believe that "helping my doubles" bit for one minute. Helping her doubles or not, she's all about the playing singles in her last year on the tour.

She needs to consider some damn Metamucil......to unclog her ass...What in the fuck is she thinking...I am getting upset thinking about her messing up these draws.

Oh,please... If she's a tennis legend, and she is, she should get a chance to play if she wants to. I'm sure she wouldn't want to go out there and get destroyed, she obviously thinks she might get a win or two. Personaly, I don't like her. But all this crap about taking the spot of someone else, please... If that person is not good enough to be in top100 AND not good enough to be among those couple of wildcards, then maybe it's not such a HUGE shame.

All she wants to do is break records or make history. Its no longer about tennis.

And tennis is all about what...? Yeah, people in sports really don't care about braking records or making history... It's everybody's dream, imo! So, why should she be an exception?

I think everyone is interested in that, otherwise people would be satisfied being ranked below 200 but getting regular tennis in the $10k circuit. Everyone wants to leave their mark and Martina is the perfect candidate to do that, because like it or not, she is a remarkable player and athlete.

I'm with Pureracket on this..."helping my doubles" indeed. That's very disingenuous. I think the only reason she's saying that is so that people can't accuse her of being a record-hunter

Playing singles can't help your doubles.. especially when you can't get out of the 1st round in singles. Wouldn't she need to advance three or four rounds to validate this "singles helping my doubles" stuff? Losing in straight sets every 1st round ain't doing it.

"Going for a tenth Wimbledon?" LOL

I hope that was the journalist interpretation, cause I don't see Nav. making the qtrs.

what's funny is Martina N keeps trying to lie about her reasons for wanting to play. It's about her own selfishness, pure and simple. It's too bad she didn't have the courage to take a Wimby wildcard in '01 or '02, when she still might have had a shot at getting to quarters or semi's. I think at age 47, she has no chance against any of the seeds, even on grass. At best, she might win one round if she gets a lucky draw. At the FO on clay i can't see her beating anybody at all.

Who next? BJK attempts to get her record back? virginia Wade tries to rebecome British number 1? Margaret Court decides to beat Navratilova's longevity record? Pam comes back in sympathy? Suzanne makes a comeback? If she loses badly its a place wasted. If she wins a round its a good story for one player after they get over the shame, but not for the player who missed a chance to be there or the one who gets no quality points for beating her. If she wins, the standard of the tour looks like rubbish - if she loses all the attention will be on her losing.

I would make a comeback if I wasn't expecting BabyBond. Martina has been eating duracell batteries for breakfast, she's gonna last for ever.

Well it would be nice if South Africa had another champion. They have not had one since you won in 1977 Virginie.

I am also considering une wildcard. Le BBC is starting un petition to demand it happens. Unlike Virginie - Back by UN-popular demand :o

Has anyone considered that perhaps younger up-and-coming players are taking a WC spot from Martina? I mean, if you are a young up-and-comer you have many years left in you and one first round exit at the French could not possibly help you all that much...while Martina's time is REALLY running out.

fammmmedspin
May 14th, 2004, 07:25 PM
Dang it, lets give all the entertaining semi finalists and finalists a WC too. Then we can see Nathalie v Natasha the rematch, Jana v Natasha, ASV or Monica in the final (or Pam v MJF in the final) Gigi beating Martina, Alexandra beating anyone, Mirjana winning her fist of 10 GS, ..........given the current injury list there may be no alternative.

Thing is....itīs gonna be a real shame watching a legend like Martina is losing to a nobody in the first round....people really should know when enough is enough and go out on top.

Do you guys really think that Martina has no more money?

I know some years back when she broke up with Judy Nelson. Martina was doing a interview with Barbara Walters. And she said because of all the spending she did. That she didn't have a lot of money left.

Do you think maybe. Part of the reason she is doing this is for money?
