Just checked the doubles results and realized that Martina and Lisa lost to Myskina and Likhovtseva, a team who has never played together before? , in three sets. I personally don`t see them playing great at Athens. Thought, Martina and a doubles specialist like Lisa should play brilliant doubles but they should split up to have a chance to win a medal with other partners.

I always wanted Lisa to team up with Lindsay to win Gold but .... Now we see the result! :o It will be a disappointing experience for Lisa and Martina to go to Athens...

Lindsay and Corina have had a better year. That's true. They beat Nadia/Meghann at Indian Wells. The last time those two have lost a match.

Well the previous tournament they made it to the finals and lost to Suarez/pascual..hardly a bad result..

Im a bit disapointed with their results this year, but I dont think its beyond them to do well at the Olympics.. They have had some really tough draws this year, whenever a strong unseeded team is in a draw (like Lindsay/Corina or Myskina/Likhovtseva etc) Martina and lisa have drawn them nearly everytime...they have to start winning those matches...

I guess Williams/Williams remains the best doubles team in the world.

Lindsay's body couldnt handle it, and she has already said she doesnt want to..

Lisa is playing with Martina b/c Lindsay told her she didn't want to play singles + doubles at the Olympics. Lisa needed another full-time partner.

I think their results will improve after this claycourt season is over.

There is a certain intrigue growing about doubles selection. it's entirely possible that Meghann will ride her successful partnership with Petrova into being US doubles #1.. And Meghann would be a much more interesting partner for both navratilova and Raymond..

Being the #1 player in doubles doesn't mean you'll make a good team with another player other than your regular partner or persons with whom you play regularly.

Lisa and Rennae were the best doubles team for a long time and Lisa was the top ranked player, but she didn't get picked for the last Olympic team because she was only half of a good team. It was a wise decision for her to begin playing with a new American partner early to boost her chances of selection this time around. However I don't think she and Martina are that great a team, but who else is there?

It would be great if Venus and Serena played doubles again but that might just piss some people off. Again. And perchance they won, we'd have volcanic eruption.

Hingis proved that a great doubles player can partner with lots of different people and still win. That, in my opinion, is why Hingis and whoever were the best doubles team through early 2002 and her nine doubles slam titles and 36 overall doubles titles prove that. And some of those titles came with Pierce, Lucic, Kournilova, as well as with great players like Zvereva, Sukova, etc.

Not many people here seem to have noticed that this was the semi-final and what a tough draw it was even to get there. Congratulations to Martina and Lisa for a great tournament. :worship:

I thought it was only a quarterfinal..

Do you mean Kuznetsova/Likhotseva?? I'm pretty sure Myskina played with Zvonareva, and Kuznetsova/Likhotseva are not bad doubles players. They are the #2 seed afterall.

According to the other thread, their winning match against Petrova/Shaughnessy was a quarterfinal, making this a semi-final. Is that not right?

Check out the date I started this thread. It was about two weeks ago. Someone just took it back to the top by telling us that Lisa and Martina improved their game compared to the situation then... ;)

I thought this was about RG as well. I wish people wouldn't bounce threads back to the top like this without an explanation. (*Goes back and deletes previous post which just confused things more.*)

On second thought, let the trail of confusion stand. I should have read czechfan's post more carefully. Anyway, my comment was obviously about RG. Sorry about that, ys.

I brought this back to the top with my post, and Im glad I did it.. Only a couple of weeks ago people were so quick to dismiss the team because admittedly, they hadnt set the tennis world on fire with results this year, but I had faith they'd turn the corner sooner or later and I believe they now have and are a logical choice to be the # 2 usa doubles team at Athens...

So I returned this thread to the top just to give credit to Martina/Lisa for silencing a few critics with this great result...

(Im just hoping I havent put the mockers on them for Wimbledon where I expect them to at least make the semis!!)
