View Full Version : Rome Quarterfinal Predictions

Here are my picks for the Quarterfinal Round of the Telecom Italia Masters Tournament in Rome, Italy

Match #1: SERENA WILLIAMS (1) vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova (9)
Svetlana’s third set heroics prevented this match from being a repeat of Roland Garros’ Fourth Round matchup between Ree Ree and Ai (Serena won convincingly 7-5 6-3). Svetlana’s taken two out of her three matches the whole distance, coming close to losing in both. Serena’s had a much easier time winning her two matches, and although she had a couple match points at 5-2, and had some trouble closing out her match, the rust is gradually and quite visibly off, or in the process of coming off. Svetlana’s been learning to play powerball, and she got a good schooling from Big Sis…it’s time for second period! Class is in session!
Prediction: Serena in straights

Match #2: Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi (16) vs. Jennifer Capriati (5)
Jennifer’s turning her slup around….FINALLY! All the American fans have been waiting to see Jenny return to form, and this is as good as it gets for her. She mauled Suarez, a clay courter, and proved she’s a contender for Roland Garros once more. Anna has a real problem against motivated top players (most recently Venus…man what a disappointment). Jenny should get through easily here, but her next round match looks like it’ll be CLASSIC!
Prediction: Jennifer in straights

Match #3: Vera Zvonareva (8) vs. Francesa Schiavone (14)
As in the Lakers’ series against San Antonio, we can truly see that home court advantage is PRICELESS! Although she’s yet to play someone ranked higher than her, Vera’s mental toughness has really been weakened since she dropped four straight sets to Venus after upsetting her in Paris last year. I think that if Francesa play’s cleanly, the match is hers. It won’t be easy, but it’ll be hers.
Prediction: Franchesca in 3

Match #4: Silvia Farina Elia (10) vs. Amèlie Mauresmo (2)
The long and the short of it: there’s no one on this side of the draw that can prevent Amèie from getting to the final if she doesn’t choke, crack, or bring her "C" game…or if she doesn’t get injured. Winning will be a COMPLETELY different story, but let’s take it one win at a time.
Prediction: Amèlie in straights

My Predictions for the Rome Semifinals are:

SERENA WILLIAMS (1) vs. Jennifer Capriati (5)
and
Francesca Schiavone (14) vs. Amèlie Mauresmo

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Good Luck to SERENA, Jennifer, Francesca, and Amèlie:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Agreed. Rena will need to be ON her game, Sveta has ALL the weapons to give her alot of trouble, if Serena's playing well, she still wins in straights.

Kuznetsova d. Williams 6-3, 6-4 (The cold weather...stiff knee, ya know? :o )

Mauresmo d. Farina-Elia 6-2, 6-1 (Too much pressure on F-E)

Capriati d. Pistolesi 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 (Too much fire power from Jennifer)

Zvonereva d. Schiavone 7-5, 7-5 (Schiavone crumbles after leading both sets)

I don't believe any of these quarterfinal matchups will be cakewalks (losers should win six games at the very least) but this is how I would rate the order of difficulty based on recent play:

1. Serena vs. Sveta (Most Difficult) Serena could very well win this in straights but I don't see her winning convincingly against the inform Sveta. Serena may still be shaking off some rust and Sveta could very well pull off the "upset". Be careful Rena! :scared:

2. Vera vs. Francesca I almost rated this most difficult but Francesca is too unpredictable. Vera is strong and solid but Fran is picking up steam and may be juiced to pull off her second conquest of a higher seed in a week. If Fran can keep her nerve and use the crowd to her advantage she can pull this off. Go Fran! :D

3. Amelie vs. Silvia Kudos to Silvia for pulling off two wins today against quality opponents. Had to have taken alot of energy from her (both mentally and physically) and asking her to knock off Amelie on the red stuff is asking alot. Silvia is playing well but I fear that Momo will be too much. Impressive win over Conchi today btw. Anyways Forza Silvia! :hearts:

4. Jennifer vs. Anna No offense to Anna who's had a nice little run here but there's no stopping the Jennifer Express after today's sparkling performance against Paola. If Anna wins this I'll eat the red dirt myself. ;)

I think Serena will be able to handle Sveta, bum knee or not.

Serena in 2 sets
Schiavone 3 sets
Amelie in 2 sets
Jen in 2

i also think that Serena has to be careful. but then again i have a very nervous disposition. ;) but honestly, sveta is not be taken lightly and i am sure that serena doesn't anyway.

I think the weather today might prefer Anna 'The Wall' so it might be tighter than people think, she is def coming into some form over the last 3 weeks which is all good.
