PARIS -- Martina Navratilova will play at the French Open, her first Grand Slam singles action in a decade.

Navratilova, 47, "wanted to play a little again," tournament spokesman Christophe Proust said Thursday.

"She will draw a crowd, but we didn't do it for that. She represents something huge for women's tennis. She's a genuine monument," Proust added.

Navratilova, who asked for a wild-card entry, last played singles at Roland Garros in 1994, losing in the first round. Her last Grand Slam singles match came later that year at Wimbledon, where she made the final.

She dominated the game from the mid-'70s to the middle of the '90s, and still holds the record for having won at least one Tour event a year for 21 consecutive seasons.

She won the French Open in 1982 and 1984, part of her collection of 18 major singles championships.

Proust said Navratilova, still a top doubles player, showed she can still compete in singles by playing at smaller events recently. Navratilova is also a member of the U.S. Fed Cup team.

She played singles in both the Bausch & Lomb and Family Circle Cup tournaments in April. She lost to Milagros Sequera 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the Bausch & Lomb, and fell to Amy Frazier 6-4, 6-4 in the Family Circle Cup.

I think she has a chanc if she draws a lowly qualifier,a lower ranked French Wild card, or an asian or an american not really comfortable on clay( Tanasugarn, Snyder for example)

:fiery: The WC should be for a rising star,a young and promising player like Karatancheva,Ivanovic,Domachowska,Vaidisova,Kleyba nova or Flipkens, not for her who already won a lot!!
She has no use to play in singles! pfffffff!A match against a player who are 30 years more than her opponent is simply ridiculous!

NOT A CHANCE NAVRATILOVA could beat TANASUGARN On ANY surface. I give Navratilove props but let be serious here. Tammy is a Top 100 player, who is talented, fights hard has outstanding court coverage and is still in her prime. I LOVE NAVRATILOVA for TRYING BUT no way...
