Was it just me or did anybody else find that 'Seinfeld' unfunny? I sat down to watch it one evening to see what all the fuss was about and it was bloody crap, especially that fucking geek with the Eraserhead hairdo

No.

Most of the UPN sticoms aren't funny either and if I am not mistaken, those shows have mostly black casts.

I loved Seinfeld, I thought it was quite clever and funny, I especially liked Elaine but I thought they were all good.

Friends on the other hand I never caught on to...I never found it to be particularly funny except for the occasional one liner from one of the girls. Apart from that I never saw what the big fuss about it was

It didn't hold a candle to " Jenny " now that was funny.

How could you not find Seinfeld funny? That and Frasier are my favorite sitcoms ever.

emptyhead
May 7th, 2004, 07:01 PM
ptkten, I don't know, it didn't make me laugh

Now I find Frasier, so so, well up to the time that Niles wanted to hump Daphne, once he did the series became dull, well for me it did

i was just playing with you, liz. upn has crap shows too... stereotypes really... most of the people i know that watch upn are white and want to be black.

the only good show on tv with a great black cast is the wire.

emptyhead, if you dont find seinfeld funny, what do you find funny?

there was a lot of hype about seinfeld cos it was completely different than the crap sitcoms out there with an all white family with two kids in the burbs. and the point of the show was it had no point. i must say i like curb your enthusiasm better than seinfeld...

I too have no idea what all the fuss is about Seinfeld. Yes, it brought the occasional smile to my face, but nothing more

As for Frasier, for a few years previous to this last one there were different writers so the quality dropped for a bit since the old writers have returned it's picked up again. The last episode was one of the funniest I've seen in years.

decemberlove asked - emptyhead, if you dont find seinfeld funny, what do you find funny?

I have a wide and varied taste on comedy. The only reason I was asking about Seinfeld was, when I was collecting my daughter from my sisters home, she(my sister) was laughing at Seinfeld, it was on at the time. Now I have sat down and viewed it a few times but never understood why it's so popular.

It's just that I watch the occasional sporting events on UPN... and the commercials for their shows are just horrible.

I don't watch any sitcoms... as a matter of fact, I hardly watch TV with the exception of the Discovery Channel and the History channel:worship: ... the few times I caught on Seinfeld, I didn't find it particularly funny but recognized the talent of Elaine and Kramer... more than funny lines, they both had the perfect delivery timing, the same with Lisa Kudrow (?)...

I watched a season or two of the show and apart from few laughs here and there, I really didn't like it. My friend said New Yorkers would appreciate it more.....

I guess it's like Fools and Horses in the UK (I hate it!), it's very regionalised and you have to have lived through that era to appreciate the stupidity. I rather watch Fawlty Tower!

What's this one about?? I heard Ricky Gervais talking about it, saying how much he liked it, but I've never seen it shown in England. Is it quite dark humour??

I never watched Seinfeld either, but I think it would appeal to me.

Nothing beats The Office though... ;)
I picked "The Office" up on DVD since I don't get BBC America. I found it funny but it is nowhere near the level of Seinfeld especially considering it was only 12 episodes compared to Seinfeld's 175ish. Take away the first two to three seasons where it wasn't that great and that still leaves about 140 episodes of hilariousness.

And dammit, what the fuck was up with that cocktease DawN? She was crazy jealous of Tim and his girlfriend but then when he breaks up with her she turns him down. We don't need anymore of her kind in America.

I started out hating Seinfeld. It was only when I watched the finale that I got really into it and understood it. It is one of those shows that you need to watch about 5 times before you can truely enjoy it. It is by far one of the best written (and acted--apart from Jerry) shows of all time. It is right up there with I Love Lucy, Three's Company and Frasier (I never liked Cheers).

Friends, on the other hand, used a type of "punchline" humour that I never truely got into. It was more of a show geared at woman who could find a role model in some of the female charaters. Sienfeld, however, brilliantly mixed plot with both physical and spoken comedy.

Hmm, I think the good thing with The Office was that it stopped after 12. And remember, there's only so much material you can fit in a docu-soap type comedy. Like I said, I've not seen Seinfeld, so I couldn't really compare.

Well, Dawn was engaged to Lee, which is why she had to turn Tim down, although clearly she preferred him. It was all sort of self-explanatory in the episodes, in a "committed to him, low expectations" kind of way.

Anyway, there were two Christmas specials shown in England last year, and you may be pleased to hear Dawn ended up with Tim... and Brent told Chris Finch to fck off - yay!! ;)
I had heard they made Christmas specials but of course I haven't seen them yet. The bastards better release them on DVD so I can complete my collection.

Finchie annoyed the fuck out of me especially the image of him having sex with that new girl outside the building.

The reason I felt Seinfeld was so funny is that the theme of it being about everyday 'nothingness' meant that they picked apart certain things that go on during everyday life and made you wonder why it happened.

Just for example, there is one episode where George gets caught eating a piece of dessert that he picked up from the very top of the garbage can...nothing nasty had touched it, but the fact that it had gone from beside the can, to being on the very top of it without touching anything but the paper plate it was on to begin with, suddenly made it absolutely disgusting and socially unacceptable. I just loved how they were able to pick out stuff like that and make you think about it a bit. That on top of the great delivery from Elaine especially (though the others have had their share of great moments too) really made it very funny.

I don't find too many other sitcoms all that funny. As I said, never got into Friends, I always thought Frasier and Cheers were really boring most of the time. Will and Grace I really liked when I first started watching but I think it's gone down a bit recently. Thank god for reruns of Seinfeld and The Golden Girls

George said the thing was not in the garbage that it was instead "hovering...like an Angel"

Seinfeld was the BEST and FUNNIEST TV show EVER.

I have every episode on my computer, that's how great it was.

They made very comical remarks about everyday situations, that people could relate to, and it made the show very funny. Most of it, if not all of it, is based on people's experience.

Even the Soup Nazi was based on a real person.

I mean, George's shrinkage problem. The episode where they all thought the baby was ugly, and couldn't say a thing to the parents. I mean, come on, it's so funny because it's so true.

I'm sure they will. :) You can see some clips here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/theoffice/clips/

Yeah, I agree, the frustration that the moron gets the girl. ;) I do like that bit in series 1 after the quiz though, when Finch is going on about how they would have won if it wasn't for "this fat bastard", and Brent turns to the camera and says "just banter", but then has to change his mind when Finch says "It's not banter". Typical bully, but Brent worships him!!

Anyway, aren't they supposed to be releasing an American version of The Office??
Brent worships him because thats his only friend, well besides Gareth. And he lives vicariously through Finch's appalling sex life.

They are doing an Americanized version. I heard bad reviews based on one's person viewing of it in a test group. And I heard that Gervais is happy with it. So who the hell knows who it will be. I will place my bet on average.
