The first semi opened as a crime-story of breaks, neither of them could hold her serve, then Benesova was who found her serve, was more consistant, Sucha made a lot of errors, there were quite many moonball-rallies, Iveta took the set 6-4. Benesova wore again the tape on her left thigh, but at one of the change of ends she put it down.
In the second set there weren't any breaks in the first 8 games, the quality rised, less errors and moonballs. At 4-4 Sucha served and had 40/0 (later had 2 more gamepoints), but double fauted twice, Benesova played brave to the lines, and broke.
The left-handed Iveta was served for the match - Sucha risked the returns bravely and broke back with a love game, then hold easily and broke Benesova's serve again at love...
Before the final set Iveta took a bathroom break, but it didn't helped her, in the final set only one player was on court. Sucha won 9 games in a row, and booked her place in the final.

In the second semi final both player hit really hard, very long rallies high quality play. Pennetta began better hit the corners very deep, came into the net made great vollies, got a break to 3-1. The games were very long a close in the complete match. After that Jankovic kept fighting, and Flavia had problems to finish the games, so Jankovic took the next 5 games.
Set No. 2 was totally the same, the quality of the game was high, and the Italian started better again, hit from both sides very though and managed to break for 4-2, and then she started to make more errors, couldn't close out the games, Jankovic played with less errors more accuracy, won 4 games in a row and won the match.

After the 2 singles encounter there was a very nice ceremony because of the joining of Hungary to the EU. There attended the tournament director, the supervisior, the chair-umpires, line judges, and ballkids. Jenő Márky the tournament director told the crowed, he gave up the conpetitive tennis in 1981 because he didn't get a passport, and couldn't enter tournies abroad, now how good that pass don't needed...

The final match of the day was the second doubles semifinal (Mandula/Schett vs. Schwartz/Whoer). It was a cool match, very enjoyable, with excellent volley-battles with all 4 players at the net. All four players were in a good mood, nice solution from everyone, it was good to see.
The best player was Barbara Schett, who (after her very poor performance on Wednesday conpensated the crowd well) didn't made any unforced errors, bombed winning passing shots from everywhere, hit unbelievable vollies too. Petra played also well, and the other teamdid also nice things.
Mandula ans Schett won 6-1 6-2 in 50 minutes, was a very good match, (which was televised from tape later, and will be repeated at night, I'll record it.)
So an almost all Hungarian doubles final came togeother, which will be very interesting!

Do you think Iveta is injured ?

May 1st, 2004, 06:05 PM
Thank you for the great report.:D

May 1st, 2004, 06:18 PM
Do you think Iveta is injured ?

I don't know, she took down the tape from her leg at in the 1st set, her movement seemed good too.
She got broken so quick when she served for the match, couldn't do anything, I think if she were really injured or had big pain, would she called for the trainer...

May 1st, 2004, 06:25 PM
:) Jelena

May 1st, 2004, 06:50 PM
thanks Tommy :)

Glad to hear Flavia played well in defeat. I knew Jelena would be tough.

Iveta  again she couldn't held her service in a decisive game, just like in Estoril against Loit. She have had a great year, but if she just could get more confidence in the big points the story could be even better.
Anyway Iveta is having her best year so far :)
