Chucky did hold the #1 title for quite a while, but her slam records, in the finals, may not be as good as that of VENUS.

Hingis:

5 GS titles
7 GS final losses - five to different players

VENUS:

4 GS titles
6 GS losses - 5 to the same player

Hingis ended her career with a 10:9 h-to-h record against VENUS, but lost six of her last eight encounters against the Six Foot Wonder in a rivalry that ran from 1997 to 2002.

Hingis also became one of the very few players to defeat, both VENUS & SERENA in a single tournament. (VENUS was injured & parents just seperated)

The both made each other a better player and produced some of the better matches of their particular era.

You say the best Rivalry at centuries end but you have included Venus' more recent slam results - if your going from the centurys end Venus has 0 slams and Martina has 5 :)

Stay awake in history class next time. A historical time period does not begin nor end based purely on a calendar date.
For instance, the 70's did not end on Dec. 31, 1979, but the era continued a few years into the 1980's period.

I have heard the 2001 encounter at the AO between Venus and Martina discussed many times, often by TV commentators, and never once did anyone suggest Venus was injured. Venus to my knowledged never said she was injured.

And her parents just separated? God, what was Venus, six or something at the time? Did she ask to live with mommie or daddy, or did she run away from home in protest?

Actually, the best excuse ever was the one Serena offered for her loss to Martina in the previous match. Serena actually said she had a stomach ache. I'm not making this up. Then, after playing just two tournaments at the beginning of the year, Serena withdrew from her next event, citing "exhaustion."

Stay awake in math class next time.

Williams won 4 out of 10 played Grand Slam finals.
Hingis win percentage in Grand Slam finals is 41.7%.
Williams win percentage in Grand Slam finals is 40%.

Venus was injured during 2001 AO? First I heard of that.

As for her parents being seperated, Martina's parents got divorced when she was 4. What does that have anything to do with the match.

How the hell can you compare the trauma of an unaware 4 year old to that of a well informed adult??!!

Venus found out her parents were getting seperated in her early twenties. What's that have to do with an Australian Open semifinal? Martina beat Venus like she stole something.;) Plain and simple.

I think it was the best rivarly...but it's not fair to use the 01 OZ as an example. At 4-1 first set; 15 of Hingis' 18 points won were from Venus' errors. Venus lost the match.

Use the 99 and 00 US Open semis. Classic tennis. Both of them.

Technically last century ended at 31st December 2000, not 99. So it's actully Martina 5 Venus 2.

Secondly Venus started on the tour later than Martina and also Martina came from a financialy stable family, Venus came from a poor and rough suburb called Compton, so therefore had less funds to get to the top. Overall I think it was a great rivally, but at the end of the day Venus is the better player. ;)

"Venus came from Compton, so there was less money?

Where do you think Hingis came from, Beverly Hills?

Hingis was born in Communist Czechoslovakia. Supposedly, her parents were so poor when she was born, they could not afford a two bedroom apartment and moved in with the grandparents.

Hingis later had a better life when she and her mom moved to Switzerland, but almost all of Martina's tennis training came from her mother.

Venus and Serena somehow found the money to move to West Palm Beach, Florida and get Ric Macci to teach them tennis at his academy.

This, poor girls make good routine is most myth as far as the Willies go.

If they were so poor, how did the Williams family have the money to move to Florida? Where did they get the funds to pay Ric Macci? How come Richard didn't have to have a job?

until venus retires I don't think you can compare the careers.
at this point, I actually think its pretty close in a lot of ways, except that hingis has more singles titles than Vee plus she spent far more time as #1..

hingis was never one of my favorites, and I adore venus and serena. but the facts remain that hingis had one hell of a career. I don't think its cut and dried who had the better career.. but I guess that wasn't the question of this thread, was it?

OK. you guys, stay awake , you have to understand something about TeeRexx. He is always right, so anything that you say that contradicts his/her posts will be wrong.

He may express him/herself wrong, but he will always be right.

Hingis was born in the ghetto. Her family was not wealthy or rich or anything like that.

first of all, you are talking about an era, not a century. a century is defined as exactly 100 years. second of all, martina had a lead in h2h meeting, gs title, gs finals, and titles at the time she retired. therefore she was the better of the two.

I dont really care when the century ended Im just saying this is a stupid thread and you cant really compare Venus' slam results from last yr since she didnt play

Last century ended on 31st December 1999 - Teerexx I don t know anyone who has talked about the 70s era during the eighties -

What I want to know is, who said Venus was "injured" during the AO semi-final in 2001? Where did this story come from?

No one, she never made the AO 02 semis.

TeeRexx must have started this, or maybe Serena thought it up for Vee?
