......so obsessed with Martina Hingis?

Notice how many threads there are started by Williams fans in which the main purpose seems to be to tear down Hingis.

The record is what it is and all the complaints in the world can't change it. Martina held the number one ranking for as long as she held it. That isn't going to change. The Williams sisters chose not to play full schedules, often for non-medical reasons. That was their choice. Martina didn't keep them out of tournaments, they chose not to play. If you have problems, see the Williams sisters, not Hingis.

Hingis continues to be very popular, though, as the recent polls on this board proves. That seems to anger some Williams fans. Again, this has nothing to do with Hingis. Venus and Serena have either made fans or they haven't, either are popular with the other players or they are not.

Venus came on the tour and said "I'm not here to make friends."

No one forced her to say that. She has probably changed some since then, but whatever popularity she has, with fans or with other players, has nothing to do with Hingis.

So why do so many Williams fans feel the need to constantly devote so much time to tearing down Hingis?

I cant speak for all Williams fans (being an individual and all  ) but I could care less about chucky...I do wish she was still playing because a Williams/Chucky match was just always very special...but the fact is the sisters took the game to another level and she could'nt hang so she ran with her tail between her legs... Obsessed? I dont think so :o

I agree, Williams fans are always saying how their favorites made Hingis retire, it's so old and totally untrue, Hingis had her physical problems, in stead of feeling for her and wishing her the best, they're just putting her down, probably because she started performing well earlier and she beat both sisters so much and because she spent so many weeks more at #1.

My question is why are you always obsessed with the Williams Sister's and their fans? It's like you have a vendetta.

What is up with the blanket terms "William's Fans" and "they". Be a man and please address who you are specifically referring to!

Williams fans need not tear Hingis down. Fans only tear down players who dominate their faves, like Hingis fans to the Williamses. Hingis is brought up often by Williams fans because she was their contemporary, and their matches were always exciting, blwoouts and nailbiters alike.

I don't see a lot of threads with Venus and Serena fans tearing into Hingis. I can see one titled something like 'Did the Williams sisters force Hingis into retirement?' I don't think that is tearing into Hingis. I actually think that's a valid question and the answer is probably yes. The official Hingis line is her feet or ankles are too sore to return and she did not want to play tennis when she knew she would struggle to be number 1 and after being there for so long she didn't like the thought of not being there again. She knew the power game and Venus and Serena in particular were taking over.

Hingis could only hold back the power game for so long. By 1999/2000 Lindsay, Venus, Serena, Mary and later Jennifer were overpowering Hingis who had a smaller build. Say what you like about Justine, even with the controversies around some victories, she has not let her smaller height and build defeat her. She worked very hard to become a powerful shotmaker. If anyone beats Henin, it's not because they are just too big and strong for her, it's because they had to play better than her. Maybe Hingis might still be there if she took on a Justine style fitness regime?

I think Hingis seems very happy with her life now anyway, but I do wish she was still playing as she was always great to watch.

Ok! Let me try to explain:
Fact is, when speaking about Serena and Venus, "people" want to undermine their achievements and dwell on little things like their alleged "arrogance", "they don't care about the sport", "they don't like the way that S&V dreses", "they're just power and athleticism"etc, when infact they have proven otherwise on many occasions. Meanwhile, Martina is guilty of being one of the most blatantly arrogant and disrespectful player in the history of the game, yet this is overlooked, most of her "dominace" came at a time when competition was very weak, etc. "people" choose to ignore these facts and dwell on how "allegedly" great a champion she was!! We acknowledge that Hingis was indeed a champion, she made the best of the little competition that she had at a time when pushers could actually win grand slams, much credit to her. Most of what Hingis fans write about are true, the fans of Venus and Serena simply want to tell the other half of that truth. Remember; It easy to be biased when speaking about your favorite player, and this is ok, problem is; Hingis fans don't want to hear about the bitch that she really was!! I hope that I have answered your question!

This is one Williams sisters fan that doesn't give a damn about Martina Hingis and I really don't care that she has retired. She may have stayed at number one for longer than either sister and has more titles (for now), but it is a safe bet that Venus and Serena will exceed her in that area. She never played Fed Cup for her country to my knowledge and didn't represent her country in the Olympics like the sisters did (and won Gold medals). Serena won the French Open in her first final, something Ms. Hingis couldn't achieve though she was in the FO final four straight years from 1997-2000. Venus is still young enough and has the game to win the FO.

Face it; your favorite burned out at an early age and was run out of the game by players who started playing better (not just the sisters) and because she didn't properly take care of her injuries because of her precious world ranking.

Get a life. And get the fuck on.

EXACTLY!!This is what scares Hingis fans!! Every little thing that Serena or Venus achieves will push Hingis further into the darkness, and five years from now when S&V retire and the competition on the wta tour reverts back to prehistoric..errrr..the day that Hingis dominated, you bet your sweet ass that Hingis will be miraculously cured of her "alleged" foot ailment and she will return back to the tour, to try and match the accomplishments of S&V!! :tape:

Hingis played Fed Cup in 1998, she was in the final that year. Also she was not in the FO final 1997-2000. She was in the final only twice - 1997 and 1999. Seles and Martinez were finalists in 1998 and 2000. Although Hingis didn't win the French in her first final like Serena, credit where it is due, she did win the Australian, Wimbledon and the US Open in her first finals there.

By starting thread like this, you are inviting even more criticism of Hingis, especially by your characterization that "all Williams fans" are out to tear her down. That may be true for some fans, but not all and it is unfair to generalize an entire population of fans. The Hingis-Williams era, however brief, was one of the most exciting tennis era's in the last 7 years. You knew when Martina took the court against Venus or Serena that it was going to be a great match. I think many fans feel, as I do, that Martina was unwilling to work through her problems to return to a top level of tennis, and I think many fans are disappointed in that because it seems to them that Martina just quit without trying.

I noticed, Tony P, in your initial post that seem to be as "obsessed" with tearing down Venus and Serena as you claim Williams fans are. You state that Williams fan just want to tear down Hingis' record to make Venus and Serena look better when in fact it is a valid comparison since Hingis is the nearest peer to Venus and Serena in terms of the quality of her wins. You state that Williams fans cannot stand that Hingis is popular, when in fact, we could care less. Yes, Hingis is popular because she is a beautiful girl and talented player who retired far too soon. However, you implied that Venus and Serena are not as popular and that is not true at all. Just pick up any magazine and you will see Venus and Serena there. And to your last point, Venus and Serena did not play full schedules by their choice. Even Venus acknowledged that in 2000 when people were protesting that she deserved the number one ranking far more than Hingis. The sisters are aware that their lack of play during some seasons may have hurt their rankings, so if you have a problem with anyone then blame the fans who consistently bring that up and not Venus and Serena.

It seems to me that you have more of a problem with Venus and Serena than Williams fans have with Hingis.

Well, if you want to make a valid comparison between Serena and Martina, then Serena leads 4-3 in winning that first grand slam final. Interestingly enough, Serena won the career grand slam by winning each of her first grand slam finals.

......so obsessed with Martina Hingis?

Notice how many threads there are started by Williams fans in which the main purpose seems to be to tear down Hingis.

The record is what it is and all the complaints in the world can't change it. Martina held the number one ranking for as long as she held it. That isn't going to change. The Williams sisters chose not to play full schedules, often for non-medical reasons. That was their choice. Martina didn't keep them out of tournaments, they chose not to play. If you have problems, see the Williams sisters, not Hingis.

So why do so many Williams fans feel the need to constantly devote so much time to tearing down Hingis?
Well since this is a tennis board I want to know why you are so upset that people are discussing tennis? Why do you care if someone talks about Hingis? Don't go into those threads.

Yes Hingis is popular. So what? Everyone knows this. Yet some people dispise her. So what?

yes The williams sisters are popular. So what? Everyone knows this. Yet some people despise them. So what?

To suggest that Player A is better than Player B does not mean you are tearing down player B. Its just stating an opinion. I'm sure you have an opinion so why not allow others to express theirs instead of vying for censorship like you seem to be suggesting?

I think Serena is a greater player in terms of accomplishments than Hings I also think Hingis is a greater player than Venus in terms of accomplishment. You may agree or disagree but im not going to whine if you post about it.

I suggest you avoid threads that make you irrational.

She's a former tennis player allegedly bless with a brilliant tennis mind, unfortunately she took a few blows to her psyche and forgot how to beat the williams sisters, and rather than be on court collecting concellation prizes she chose to retire from the sport with an "alleged' foot injury!!
