Although I am sure most of you will pick Miami 2001. I though a More COMPLETE match where they were both playing their best tennis together in the match at the same time was Pilot Pen 2001 Semi's.

I just dug that up last nite from my tape archive. I was nervous just looking at it..the match was decided on WINNERS. Great Serving, Great Returning, Great Shot Making, Great Defense, and thats just the First Set. LOL.

Both Gals where spot on and the Match could have went either way. But Venus won her 2nd match of that day, earlier she beat Justin Henin in the quarters in 3 sets and came out that SAME EVENING and beat Jennifer 6-4, 7-6(1)

They were both playing at such a HIGH LEVEL.

What was your favorite Venus/Jennifer Match up?

Miami 2001 gets my vote. It was by far the most dramatic with Jennifer (and almost all the audience) thinking she had won the match in the 3rd set tiebreak when she hit what she thought was a winning forehand.

it was dramatic, but Vee will tell you she didn't play her best Tennis. she played good tennis. Have you ever Watched a match where both players are on? It's Serious stuff man. (i.e. Pete Sampras vs. Andre Agassi 2001 US Open Quarters or Chanda Rubin vs. Monica Seles Oz Open 1995 i think? Or Venus Williams vs. Martina Hingis 1999 Zurich Swisscom)
Those Matches come to mind where BOTH players are ON, and the match is decided on WInners not errors. Great matches to watch to me.

2001 Miami, Venus was spotty, then Cap fell apart, wasn't great tennis, was SUSPENSEFUL and EXCITING, but if you watch the 2001 Pilot Pen...it is to exciting..just ROCKET RALLIES.

2001 Us Open semi...especially the first set! V comes storming back from 1-4 down armed w/her mighty dtl backhand...

"Jennifer was right there and that backhand still blew by her!" -John Mac.

Also love the Acura Classic final (01?) Venus -v- Monica...Monica was on fire beating Cappy and Hingis in straights and playing well in the final but had no answers for Venus.

US OPEN, it was a good first set, then Jenn Self Destructed and had no answers for Vee...but that Shot was Laser! Venus' backhand was on that day.

MIAMI is definitely my favorite! I still get chills watching this match! Venus gutted it out and I am still shocked that she won each time I watch it! Venus had to keep cool against not only her tenacious opponent but the crowd and the searing heat! :worship: I remember almost giving up and turning off the VCR! I was sooo on edge! I'm glad I didn't punk out and stop recording. I would have lost one of the most classic matches of Miss Venus!

I do love the Pilot Pen victories...I have all three matches on one tape. Venus was just amazing that week. :worship: She showed why she is the fucking Venus Williams!!! She left me :speakles:

Oh definitely Miami.

It's the only time JenCap has every really looked like she might actually beat Venus.

I really, really enjoyed the 01USO Semi to see Vee storm back from 0-3 to win that set with some great backhands. Mary Carillo had already called Capriati's win and said she'd be No. 1 come Monday. Cliff said "If she wins". For that part alone I could watch that match over and over. Venus really opened up a clinic after 1-4. In the second set although she struggled on serve and also failed to break JC with three bps in hand, she still won impressively. And she had a cold.

Miami, well Miami is undoubtedly in a class by itself; kinda makes me think of Vee playing Henin in the Amelia Island Final. So much drama! It wreaks havoc on your nerves, man! She does!

The PPQF vs JC wasn't too bad but it was riddled with errors and breaks of serve. I was mad at Vee for losing her serve all the time but the feat she accomplished that weekend was truly amazing, beating Henin and JC on the same day and then taking down a well-rested Davenport (who had the luck of Clijsters forfeiting) in the final. I loved her winning point on bp in that second set at 4-4, then her match point. Venus is truly a thrill to watch.

She had a cold and had won Pilot Pen a few days earlier w/the same cold beating Cappy/justine/Lindsay..in a 24hr span! :worship: :worship: :worship:

I did say she had no answers for Vee...but yeah...she wasn't as competitve and gave up b/c she had no answers...mentally self destructing.

Miami 2001 wins for drama purposes, and it was by far the closest match. But quality? it comes in last. Venus had over 70 UFE; Jennifer had over 50 UFE. Venus had over 30 winners; but Jennifer only had about 15 winners.

That's ugly tennis.

In terms of quality, I'd say the Open semis. Venus started a little shaky with errors, but she ended it high.

For both playing well, probably the New Haven semis.

My cable went out right before the pilot pen matchup. I got a credit too. Ughh! I wish I saw that one.:(

I don't think the US Open between them was high quality. Jen was trying to overpower Venus by hitting every ball hard, and she got tired and could not withstand the queen's arsenal. Venus hit some lovely backhand down the line shots that were amazing.

Miami 2001 was my favorite. Jen was playing at a high level, while Venus was making alot of errors but the queen would not go away. Venus was tough. She was saving match points, and I could not believe how she held her ground. Very dramatic match.

Definitely the '01 US SF. Both players were playing soo well..and the atmosphere was just amazing. I would have given everything to have been there. Venus really played an amazing match, and Jennifer fought really well for playing such a hot player.

The Miami final was alot of errors, with the first two sets lop-sided. The final 4 games or so was the only entertaining part.:p

Miami would be the most dramatic, but quality wise I'm going to agree with most people by selecting the Pilot Pen Match.

I like all 3 matches from 2001 for different reasons:

the Miami match for the drama
Pilot Pen for the competitiveness, plus Jen had a hissy fit during that match
and USO for "the staredown" and those priceless VW backhands :)

Jennifer had 8 match points at 5-4 and at 6-5. I think the 7th one she thought she hit a winner backhand DTL passing shot but it just missed, and her last match point she double faulted.:tape: But then Venus went up 6-0 in the tiebreak b4 winning 7-4....I truly never expected Venus to win that match.

Yeah, I remember taht backhand down the line from Venus at the USOpen. Venus hit one down the line and Jenn got to it and Venus hit a nother backhand down the line and Jenn was litteraly one step away, but b/c she was moving the other way and of Venus' power, she couldnt get it and it was a winner. Really amazing. What happened during the Pilot Pen match? Jen had a hissy fit? What happened? What did she do?

The crowd was nearly 100% In Jen's favor in Miami and about 90% in her favor at the US Open. It's especially enjoying to see everyone explode in cheer when they think Capriati wins and when she gets to her 8 match points. The look on Stefano's face...:tape: along with the others in Capriati's box. Then at the US Open the fans were obnoxious holding up the match to boo line calls that went against Cappy.

Didn't matter Richard had the foresite to let Venus and Serena know to expect such behaviour.

She started screaming at the umpire because a cell phone started ringing. So Pam and Mary Jo start making excuses for her and why she's acting so "crabby"(hilarious in itself).

Also, after she lost the first set, she went to her chair, and started slamming things all over the place. Then just in case we missed it while they were going to break, once the commercials are over, Pam Shriver says "take a look at how Jennifer Capriati reacted to losing that first set" and they replay it all over again. The looks on the faces of the audience right behind her were priceless.

yea, after the first set (which was crushing for Jen. Jen went up 2-0...and then didn't hold again. Venus served for it at 5-3, Jen broke...and then Vee broke again) Jen walked to her chair. As she was sitting down she slammed her racket down. Then she grabbed her towel and slammed it on top of her racket.

Pam and Mary Joe showed it in slow motion after the commerical break. Pam said "Ya think she's mad that she lost the first set?"

I rememer that, but I also remember Mary Jo critisizing Jenn for being so easily distracted...Saying if she were focussed she would be able to block those things out.

Finally!!! It is great to see a thread that involves Jen Cap for once. For me, any match with Capriati is exciting but my favorite with her against Venus would have to be Miami 2001. Even though she lost, she is still awesome and a great player. Go Jen!!!!!!!!

Miami-not for quality though-for the sheer fight of it
