Yeah, seemed like there was alot of UGLY Tennis going on there. 41UE's and 27 winners and Zu had 49UE's and 21 WInners. Just spotty tennis it seem. Vee converted 7 or 17 BP's and had 3 of 11 converted against her self.

But in the END, a CHAMPION knows how to win UGLY! And an impressive score line.

Yeah, you should have been in the Wednesday Score Lines Thread Some of the posters were losing their minds. It was just ridiculous to think Venus would lose.

Geez.

Foot, I think that you hit it on the head. Brad Gilbert is a genius at this kind of winning when he was on the tour. The important thing is to stay focused and concentrate on each point with the vision of winning in the back of your mind. Cuz when all is said and done, a win is a win.

I'm glad Venus was able to pull through. I honestly think she had one of the toughest 2nd round opponents for a clay court tourney. And what's key is that when she loses the first set, she changes her tactics (even if a tiny bit) and goes on to win the match. That's important.

Good win for vee.
It's no shame to lose a set against Zuluaga (Reeves on the other hand), she's an amazing claycourter
Well done venus!!

Maybe Venus needs to go out and play a set of tennis before "RIGHT" before her match starts so she can be warm.

It's another good win for Venus and a step forward for this year. I sometimes take these matches, much like the one against Martinez, sometimes I feel Venus needs to feel out her opponets - she's not back fully - it seems to work as she picks up play along the way. Congrats to Venus and Fabiola on the match.

Fabiola is "fabulous" on clay. This is a good win, and I'm not sure why people are surprised Venus lost a set to Fabiola on clay. Anyways, good luck, Venus!

Maybe Venus needs to go out and play a set of tennis before "RIGHT" before her match starts so she can be warm. That was capriati a couple years ago, she would routinely lose the first set before she would come storming back. I remember Schett being 5/0 up on Jen before jen kicked into gear to win it 7/5, and those were the days when schett was playing well, I miss those days, come back jen and strong too.

I said Venus is going to be vulnaruble in first rounds here.
Not that it was a hell of a prediction because everyone should know this.

I know why Venus has trouble getting past these rounds too, but I won't share. ;)

I agree. I think not only is she feeling out the opponent on what tactics to use, but she's getting used to the court at the same time. Hopefully they will be two set wins from here on out. But, a win is a win. Go Veeeeeeeee :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

congrats Venus.:) Even a 4/6 loss first set is not bad against a quality clay courter. It looked like just a break decided that.

Yet Vee came back to dominate the last two sets.. that my fellow friends is a sure sign of a champion and a CONFIDENT VENUS WILLIAMS!!:)

FEARLESS VENUS RULES!!!

I think the same thing was said about JHH at Wimby 2001 during her match vs Venus. I think it was Chris Evert who said so as she cited her play against Capriati in the SF..

When you're a slow starter................

In Vee's match I don't think it was so much a slow start as Fabiola probably mixing it up and surprising her. Vee got the first break, no? Then she lost her serve at 4-4 but couldn't convert on her break chance to get back on serve.

Throughout the match she seemed to struggle to break Fabiola which was really surprising to me. I think Vee would love to play familiar players more often because she knows right off the bat how to deal with them. She hadn't played Fabiola for a couple of years and I believe she took a little time familiarizing herself. It's evident IMO from the final two sets' scores.

And that is what normally separates the better player from a player that might be a level down. The ability to not be at your best and still win a tough match.

It's a matter of confidence. She had similar stats against Raymond and Dementieva this year, but lost because she simply did not finish the big points better.
