On the list because she completed the "Serena Slam" in 2003, winning the four majors in a row -- the 2002 French Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open, and the 2003 Australian Open. So powerful and dominant that in early April, after an eight-month layoff due to injury, she won the Nasdaq 100 in lopsided fashion.

On the list because the 28-year-old German has 17 World Cup victories and won 1998 Nagano Olympics slalom gold medal. Has excelled in both the speed and technical events -- one of the rare athletes on the World Cup circuit to collect medals in each of the four major skiing disciplines (downhill, super-G, slalom and giant slalom) in a career.

On the list because she just won her 50th LPGA title and is the most dominant woman on the tour in decades. Made headlines for playing in a PGA event last year, proving she can hang with the men.

On the list because the 5-6 dynamo was No. 1 in the world last year. Winner of three of the last four Grand Slams. John McEnroe has called her one-handed backhand "the best backhand in the world." And her mental toughness is a plus.

Janica Kostelic
Skiing

Kim Clijsters
Tennis

http://espn.go.com/i/magazine/new/ultimate_kostelic.jpg

http://espn.go.com/i/magazine/new/ultimate_clijsters.jpg

On the list because she won three golds (slalom, the giant slalom and the combined) and a silver (super G) at the 2002 Winter Olympics -- the first alpine skier to win four medals in the Olympics. She was the World Cup champ in 2001 and 2003. And she's only 22 years old.

On the list because Clijsters has reached the semis or finals of the last six majors, and was ranked No. 2 in the world in 2003. Has 21 tour victories to her credit. Mentally tough. although she still seeks her first major.
