OK- I hope that you cannot wait . . . I have an update! Things have been so busy in the last month and a half. I have barely had a chance to breathe! I am going to have to update you in installments (http://www.venuswilliams.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsID=58862&itype=&iCategoryID=). I know, I know, I still owe you the Dubai update, but I am getting to that and I have a reason for the tardiness.

http://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gifhttp://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gifhttp://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gifSo let's go back to March. I was still dealing with injuries from way back from the Australian Open ~ twisted ankle, lower leg strain, all that fun stuff. I was not getting too much better but I was practicing anyway, trying to get ready for the NASDAQ-100. So I've told you already about the launch party (http://www.venuswilliams.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=55853&itype=&iCategoryID=431)for my website. That was really fun. I played hostess for the night, greeting all of my guests and showing everyone a good time. Then of course came my tragic loss at the NASDAQ. I really had a bad day and my opponent had a great day. It was still a match that went down to the wire. In the end at least I know that even on my worst day my opponent will have to work their hardest to win.

The very next day I was back on the practice courts, but this time on clay. I was still in pain with my injuries but I really wanted to be out there, to be playing, to battle with the rest of the players! I also was dealing with a lot of changes at my interior design company V Starr Interiors (http://www.vstarrinteriors.com/). I had to be sure that I did not let that get in the way of my concentration for my tennis. I have found it more and more important to be involved with my company. That means calling into the office at least twice a day, speaking with all the staff, even our interns, speaking with our clients, staying updated on the progress of clients, speaking to the accountants, lawyers...I really enjoy all aspects of the business and I have learned a lot!

Ok , now comes the next tragedy, get ready, MY COMPUTER CRASHED! This was tragic. Of course, I had everything on there and, of course, I was too lazy to save everything to CD's. This was monumental. I was working on our six month plan for V Starr, I have all of my poems, and my music that I down loaded and paid for. But most of all, yes, most of all I could not write to you all. At this time I am not even using my computer. I have to borrow one. Not having a computer makes me feel like I am in the eighties, big hair bright colors and all...

Later, V

Hey! I'm back! Let's start from where I left off. Serena eventually won the NASDAQ. That was really great. Go Serena! All day long!

McDonald's Commercial

http://picsrv.venuswilliams.com/fif=/venuswilliams/img_242_378.fpx&obj=iip,1.0&wid=250&hei=186&rgn=0,0,0,0&cvt=jpeg (javascript:openRMA(83426))http://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gifhttp://picsrv.venuswilliams.com/fif=/venuswilliams/img_242_380.fpx&obj=iip,1.0&wid=250&hei=186&rgn=0,0,0,0&cvt=jpeg (javascript:openRMA(83428))http://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gif

The Sunday after Serena's win we were scheduled to film a McDonalds commercial. Let me tell you that this was the most amazing commercial ever! The theme of the commercial was surfaces. It took two days to film and that was not even enough time but we got it done. It was hard work. We came straight from Miami on the first day to film the first part of the commercial. We started off by hitting the ball back and forth on a regular hard court. That is the only normal part of the commercial. From there we got really radical with the surfaces. The next scene that we filmed was on the beach. It was very challenging to try to hit balls that bounced on the sand! We had wooden boards under some areas of the "court" but for the most part I was trying to make it look really intense and action- like without twisting my ankle!

During lunch break I had a quick diversion: I went to the Asian Fair on the drive from the tennis courts set to the beach set. I could not help myself. I love fairs and markets! Serena and my other sister, Isha, got in on the act and we had a great time looking around even though we could only stay for ten minutes! We all got Indian Sari's - I got three: one teal green, one pink and white tie dye (sounds cheesy but its cool, its silk) and one with flowers. Plus we got these really cool belts with coins on them that rattle. We were battling over the colors. We wanted to get henna tattos but there was not time.

The last scene of the the day was filmed at a local McDonalds. In this scene Serena takes it a little to far with the tennis. You will see what I mean when the commercial airs.

http://picsrv.venuswilliams.com/fif=/venuswilliams/img_242_381.fpx&obj=iip,1.0&wid=250&hei=186&rgn=0,0,0,0&cvt=jpeg (javascript:openRMA(83429))http://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gifhttp://picsrv.venuswilliams.com/fif=/venuswilliams/img_242_379.fpx&obj=iip,1.0&wid=250&hei=187&rgn=0,0,0,0&cvt=jpeg (javascript:openRMA(83427))http://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gif

On Day two of the filming we shot on ice, water and grass. The ice was the most challenging because we shot it at an ice rink and it was very cold in there. That was the only scene that was not fun to do.

The water scene is spectacular. It by far surpassed anything that I was expecting. We filmed it in Biscayne Bay in Miami. The Miami sky line is in the background as is the bridge to Key Biscayne where we play the NASDAQ-100. By the end of the commercial it really started to settle in just how huge this production really was. It was an experience of a lifetime and amazing to be apart of. This of course was not the end of my busy week (http://www.venuswilliams.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsID=58863&itype=&iCategoryID=)...

Stay tuned - Venus

OK, we are still backtracking to March. After the McDonalds commercial ended I had to immediatly go to New York for a photoshoot with Zoo Magazine. My flight was late arriving and I did not get into the city until midnight. Meanwhile, I have to get up at 6 am to practice indoors on clay in the city. I just get real uptight if I start missing days of practice right before an event. I got a real wake up call in the fact that I did not wake up! I did not hear the alarm, I did not here the snooze alarm, I just could not get up. I missed my practice because I was just basically in a body coma.

I finally got to the shoot at 9am. Six hours and eight make up changes later and we still had not begun shooting! This is not unusual at high fashion photo shoots. My whole thing is to show up on time, be professional, do my best and still represent Venus Williams.

The photographer was Phillipe Cometti and he is absolutly amazing. I have worked with some great photographers, but he was so artistic and had such vision, he is just so beautiful. He knows how to work you too - he had me holding postions so long- my hands, face, expression, body had to be just so. After each shot I was like " ok I got triceps there" or "yep just got the quads worked out." I was burning serious calories. At one point I was balancing on a small bench on my back at 180 degrees- like a plank. It was serious abdominal work, my physio would have been proud!

I did not finish that day until about one in the morning, but it was time well spent. Day two of the shoot was another long day, about twelve hours. Although I had to finish early because I was going to see a show on broadway! Debra Cox is headIining the Broadway show AIDA. I got there late (work before play!) but I am so glad that I made it! I really reccomend that everyone go see this play, it is so moving- just the dancing is beautiful enough to make you cry! The end had a twist that you would never expect. Deborah of course is just amazing. Her voice is perfect, her actitng is just so natural, you forget that she is Deborah Cox because she really embodies Aida, the main character. Oh, I forgot to tell you what the play is about, in a nutshell: this Egyptian and Aida, a captured princess from Nubia, fall in love. Meanwhile Aida is the maid servant to the princess who is engaged to the Egyptian that Aida loves, and they are to be married in seven days! A lot of stuff happens and then the end comes. Go see it! Go Deborah, you got it girl!

I dragged my broken body out of bed the next day before the crack of dawn to take a flight to Florida. What did I do as soon as I got there? Go to Practice! I know you all are thinking, what a glamorous life! Try again. Think about it, I just had three twelve hour days and one fifteen hour day all in a row with very little sleep. One day I think that I got like seven hours. Meanwhile I expect to play at a high performance level without practice and at quite possibly a lower concentration level - yet I want and need to do these commercials and photoshoots. It's part of what I do. I can tell you that I have not once had a chance to go to a musem or a gallery, or see the Empire State Building in New York. I have been there several times a year since 1997 and there is just never time for those kinds of things. What is the end result? I go non -stop and when I do have a moment of time to slow down, I don't because I just don't know how!!

Look for Zoo Magazine on the newsstands in late May --- I will be featured in the June issue.

There's more to come (http://www.venuswilliams.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsID=58864&itype=&iCategoryID=) . . . V

http://picsrv.venuswilliams.com/fif=/venuswilliams/img_242_365.fpx&obj=iip,1.0&wid=250&hei=212&rgn=0,0,0,0&cvt=jpeg (javascript:openRMA(82331))http://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gifOk- so last week was like my first tournament win in over a year. Of course, you die hard fans will subtract six months from that because you will realize that I was injured for much too long!

I spent three days at home after my whirlwind trip to New York. Click here (http://www.venuswilliams.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsID=58863&itype=&iCategoryID=)to get updated on this. I really could not move a lot because my physical therapist was not there to tape my ankle that I twisted it in my last match at the NASDAQ-100 and in Australia. She was with Serena at a tournament. So I sat in one place and hit balls. I really wanted to concentrate on the areas that I think really let me down at the last event, namely, my serve, my return and my agression. I was still inconsistent. Normally I play lots of great points in a row, but lately I had been playing some great points but a lot of bad points with errors in between. So I was really working on the mental aspect in practice even though I could not move a lot.

I got to the tournament on Sunday. I called Serena, who had arrived in Charleston a few days earlier than me, before my flight took off and she was complaining that the the shops where not open. She termed it "outrageous."

In my first round match was on Tuesday I played against the 90th ranked player in the world, but the next thing I knew I was down 2-5 in the first set! I rallied to get it to 4-5 but I made too many errors( see what I mean!) and she captured the first set. By this time my dad had arrived to the match. He was late arriving because he was at Serena's practice because she was playing next on. I felt really bad because I was not doing any of the things that we had worked on in practice! Once again I found myself down, 0-3, in fact. It was at this point that I decided not to make mistakes. I won that second set 6-4. The next set I was up 3-1 before the errors started to creep in again and I found myself at 3-3. I just had to settle down at this point and really start to battle. I ending up winning that match 6-3 in the third. I had been on the court two and a half hours and we had delayed the night session for thirty minutes!

Now that I think about it - I feel like this was a really important match for me. There was never a point where I felt like I was going to lose, but things would be a lot different for me right now had I not won that match. First, I would not have gotten the opportunity to play more matches which is what I need now. Second, I would not have had the chance to hone my game on clay, focusing on my game, taking down the errors and step it up with the agression! Third and most importantly, I would not have won the tournament!

My quarterfinal match was really important to me because I finally had a chance to play a higher ranked player which I really enjoy. I had the win fairly easily, but my leg hurt me quite a bit in that match as well as in the semifinals.

Fortunately, by the the time I played the finals my leg was feeling good. Unfortunately, I lost the first set much too easily, 2-6! I knew that I had to change it around, be more agressive, stop missing and really take it to her! My sisters, Isha and Serena were there all the way supporting me and always believing in me. I could hear them from the sidelines during the match. I won the second and third sets 6-2, 6-1 and secured my second Tier I clay court title.

http://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gifhttp://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gifhttp://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gifA funny thing happen last week that I have to mention. I started coming to the net. Like a lot. And I LIKED IT! It started to come so natural. I started running in, attacking short balls, vollying like a maniac and winning every point! This week I have continued this at practice and I know that this will be key for me at the French Open and for the rest of my career.

I had a great time in Charleston, the fans were really the best, I got the win, it was all the way it was supposed to be. The only problem was that I could not get out of the city. It was terrible. I missed my 6 pm flight out of the city because my match went too long. Can you believe that every single flight was booked?! I ending up having to leave at 3 am the next morning to drive to Columbia just to get a flight out of there!

Whew - I think we are all caught up except for Fed Cup. Look for my upcoming newsletter for the 411 on my time in Slovenia.

Love, V

IT'S ABOUT BLOODY TIME!! I've been wanting Vee to play this way since the '97 US Open final against Hingis. If she ever commits herself to being a true serve-and-volleyer in the manner of Margaret Court, Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova, everybody else on the Tour, INCLUDING SERENA, will be playing for the #2 ranking. ;)

I am just amazed after reading these excerpts from Venus' "diary." You know, I feel like I've gotten to know her so much more, and I really really like her!! We can all see that she is a very busy person, yet, to take time out and share a piece of your experience with your fans is rather generous on her part. She doesn't need to do this, yet she does. I know she is not alone in sharing her thoughts, other players do it as well. But I respect all the players who realise that their fans are people who love them...and to give some of that love back...brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart. Keep it up Venus!! :hearts: And get thee to the net at every possible opening!!! :bounce: :bounce:

How can you disagree with Venus telling what her day to day activities are. jenny161185 is a Capriati fan, but she enjoyed reading what Venus had to say. If Jenn Capriati wrote a report like this I would enjoy reading it even though I'm not a fan of hers. I would read it because I am interested in the perspectives of the players that I watch play on TV.
