If been voting on this poll since last week. It't not about who you like better, but who you think is the better athlete. I wish some people would remember that.

Where the hell did they get these picks? A million and a half basketball players but no Michelle Kwan??? And there are other swimmers I could think of. And there's this diver, who's really really really good. Who picked these people?

And why Brian Jordan on the mens list? He's nowhere near the best baseball player! That was really random!

ESPN

"On the list because
Clijsters has reached the semis or finals of the last six majors, and was ranked No. 2 in the world in 2003. Has 21 tour victories to her credit. Mentally tough. although she still seeks her first major."

Yeah, I am a bit puzzled by that too. I wonder which aspect of athletism is Wie more superior to Ellen MacArthur......

hmmm....

...Is it the hardship to be on the golf course while sun shining down? Could it the danger of getting bitten by racoons? Is it the food and drinks after a round that's hard to digest? Would it be the danger of getting knocked down by those glof karts? Oh, it must be the distance covered by a golfer, unbearable!

It must be tough to be a golfer.....

and guess what she is getting way more votes!

....and I wonder why...

Honestly where the fuck is Michelle Kwan. Michelle Kwan is probably the most underrated female athlete of this generation!!! This is really frustrating. First she was left off of the Most Influential Minority Athlete list done by SI and now this!

Also no Svetlana Khorkina!!!! I don't get this. Khorkina is the ONLY GYMNAST (male or female) to have won three World Championships!!! She is also currently the only gymnast to have won the European Championships dating all the way back to 1998. She has only been in 5 European Championships and in 4 of those Championships she's medalled (1 silver (94) and 3 golds (98,00,02). This woman owns Women's Gymnastics and yet she is not at all recognized!!!!! I HATE ESPN!!! I HATE YOU!!!!

Some VERY interesting matchups.

Beach Volleyball vs Triathlon.

Pole Vault vs Soccer.

BTW, they're asking who's the best athlete. One way to measure that is to ask yourself, 'if the two players competeing in heptathlon, who would win?' The heps measure sprinting, distance running, jumping, throwing for wieght and throwing for distance. One reason why there are so many basketball players is that they lay a sprinting sport that requires endurance and jumping.

While Ellen MacArthur and Julie Krone, to name two, have performed incredible athletic feats, they aren't close to being the best athletes. And I certainly can't imagine ANY figure skater as a better athlete than say, a world-class triathlon competitor.

well i can understand ppl being angry at kwan not being there-- she won nationals this year-- but khorkina??? what has she won THIS YEAR. and venus isn't at the top right now... nowhere near serena kim and justine. it doesn't matter if she's a great athlete that has significantly less to show for it over the last year.

It seems like what most people don't understand is that the best players aren't always the most athletic. To me being athletic means that you have the speed, strength, and quickness to compete in other sports. For example Mike Vick should win the mens draw because I could see him running track and playing some basketball and doing fairly well in them. On the womens draw I see Marion Jones winning, because not only is she a great track star, but she was an All American point guard in basketball at UNC in college. I know most people pick their favorite sport stars, but being athletic is more than just being good in one sport, but it is having the physical ability to crossover and do other things.

marion jones might win, so quit your bitching ;)
and someone who is mediocre in 2 sports (which isn't the case that you mentioned) will never beat a star in one...

That doesn't mean the star is the better athlete. IMO Bo Jackson was probably one of the greatest athletes ever, who if not for his injury problems had the potential to be in both the baseball and football hall of fame. He wasn't the best player in either sport, but he was pretty darn good in both.

well the best female athlete is by far babe didrickson (thats not spelled correctly) because not only was she incredibly versatile, she was a star athlete in everything she did...
versatility doesn't make you any greater an athlete, it's impressive but a star athlete usually has something extra or the person who could play 2 sports would be better at the sport they are compared in...

and i agree the same for thorpe (the native american) bc he was SWEET at everything. it wouldnt have mattered if he could just compete at everything...

No argument about Babe she was remarkable and was way before her time, how many sports did she play? My other question is what is your definition of being athletic because if I recall Mary Jo talked about how athletic Serena is, but Serena said she is horrible at other sports. From that statement I concluded that people think Serena has the potential to play other sports making her athletic, if not sure, what do you think?
