Serena
Venus
Lindsay
Martina
Daniela
Amelie
Anna
Kim
Justine
Monica

Martina injury
Daniela. I really expected A LOT from her. She just really dissapointed after Indian Wells, physically and mentally.
Anna and her injuries and pressure.
Monica and injuries.
Venus and Serena injuries. sad:
Amelie injuries
Lindsay injuries

Kim and Justine, although with minor injuries, were able to take advantage.
Two years ago this would be my top ten for today. Unfortunately with all the injuries, it turned out very badly.

I also agree with you on Daniela. Thought she would be in the top 10 for sure, and a threat for the top 10.

I also thought that Daja Bedanova would have been in the top 10 by this time, as well as Iroda Tulyaganova.

Bovina I thought for sure.

You both stole my thought. I was just going to go and put Bovina.

Iroda too. And Daja Bedanova.

What the hell happened to these players.
Big games but something lacked

Injuries? I know for Iroda.
How about Daja and Elena.

Both have issues with weight????

Just to make sure I understand the purpose of the thread, we are talking about those we expected to make it to top 10 and didnt, or stay in top 10 and didnt.

Make:
Safina: all signs showed she could have been winning slams, and did not
Lina Kras: coming out as a World Junior Champion, she again showed all signs of greatness and didnt
Hsieh: no need to say more, almost perfect record finishing 2001, and gone into oblivions.
Sveta: best junior back then, took a bit longer

Stay:
Monica/Jelena/Venus were all expected to drop out of top 10 after 2002.
People were expecting Monica to retire, Venus to be injured (not that she is hated, just playing as intense as that almost guarantees injuries), Jelena for obvious reasons.
but ones didnt stay
back then though, it's been speculated that it was almost creepy how consistent the top 10 players are up there overlooking the rest of the field. And Jelena surprised many by staying there.
Hantuchova though is the only one people expected to stay there for long that didnt, the rest was talented enough to have been there for a long long time.

Daniela and Iroda are my two players that are not in there that I thought were for sure bets.

Monica I suspected something like this would happen.

Finally, Anna K....I used to be like the HUGEST Supporter over at GoTennis. But as of recent I keep losing my faith in her. Hopefully she'll prove me wrong tho.

Daja always had weight issues from the beginning, .

Elena went on the Hantuchova diet, but she's trying to get back together. :)

Iroda....INJURIES WHY OH WHY!? If you all remember the 'Most Promising Up & Coming Player Essay Competition' from WTA.COM. There was an essay that won on Iroda....I was the author :) so to see her like this is heart breaking.

Not sure if Hsieh would have made it into the top ten, but I figured she would crack the top 100 by this time for sure. I thinks he recently played a tennis challenger, but since then hasn't done much. Same with Li Na, who is now retired.

Serena-
I thought she would be #1 (if not for injuries, she still would be)
Venus-
I thought she would be #2 (same reason)
Kim-
I knew she would be in the top three, she's so consistent
Lindsay-
She was still a force on the tour, I knew she'd be somewhere near the top 5
Monica-
She has always been a favorite of mine, and I always considered her to be dangerous on tour. I definately thought she would be in the top ten. Who knows, when she officially makes her comeback, she very well may.
Justine-
She really had a personal renaissance in the 2002-2003 offseason
Amelie-
There was a huge glass ceiling, preventing her from cracking the top 5, and without the injuries, she wouldn't have cracked it. However, she has stepped up the level of her play as of late.
Jennifer-
She was good, not that great, but not bad
Daniela-
She had proven, to me at least that she belonged in the top ten, and if not for health issues, in my opinion, she would be in the top ten.
Dementieva-
She had reached the Olympic finals, (no small feat) and while her play never impressed me, her fight did, and I figured she'd find a spot in the top ten.

My predictions are in order, so....two years ago, I thought the top ten (in numerical order), would be:

1. Serena Williams
2. Venus Williams
3. Kim Clijsters
4. Lindsay Davenport
5. Monica Seles
6. Justine Henin-Hardenne
7. Amelie Mauresmo
8. Jennifer Capriati
9. Daniela Hantuchova
10. Elena Dementieva
