Current top Russian GS contenders:

Myskina
Petrova
Dementiava
Zvonereva
Kuznetsova
Sharapova
Bovina
Safina
Krasnoroutskaya

My choice of these players might be Zvonereva, at Roland Garros in 2007.
She has an all court game, but might not be able to beat certain American players in London or New York before then or until they retire. :p

Myskina does not seem to lead me to believe that she will hold up physically, Dementieve will not hold up mentally and Sharpie is falling fast in the rankings to be a real possible Russian GS winner.

Yes, I intentionally omitted Ann K's. name from the above list.

it could come sooner than later. but only at RG. vera is a very good clay court player and she has some very good wins on the red clay at RG. both williams sisters have just come back from injury and are also vulnerable sometimes in the early rounds at RG. now obviously im not saying that zvonareva is a fav for the tournament but if a couple of upsets do occur then she could become a player to watch out for in the draw. she beat venus last year (albeit venus wasnt playing her very best) and she did take serena to 3 sets at RG the year before i think. in saying this the belgians could be even tougher than the williams sisters, as for them well i cant be bothered saying anything coz even with their injuries and viruses they will still probably get through.

Lana is a great contender in every surface ... except I doubt the Aussie will ever be with Svetlana

Her great sucess at Wimby and awesome results on hardcourts  she hasnt played on clay this year YET so we have to wait
- - - - - - -
Myskina will always be in list...best Russian yet  excluding Zverva because she is technically from Belarus
- - - - - - -
Dementieva .... Got Serve?
- - - - - - -
Petrova ... Has Serve! Her serve will really put her through in GS especially on clay
- - - - - - -
Zvonareva can make it .. Vera has everything on her but nothing in her head ... we'll see
- - - - - - -
Sharapova ... :rolls:
- - - - - - -
Bovina needs to stop trying the Hantuchova diet and work .. Daniela is atleast trying to come back
- - - - - - -
Safina is still young and her break out will be at RG if any
- - - - - - -
Lina...Lina...Lina Krasnoroutskaya is great...has talent but will she use it?

The 2 best of the "Soviettes" are a few years away, IMO: 15 y.o. (officially UKR) Viktoria Kutuzova and 14 y.o. Alisa Kleybanova. And I Wouldn't Write off Sharky So Soon.

jen won three slams with a dodgy serve, sometimes circumstances alighn themselves right and a player finds themselves in a position to win a very unlikely event, Justine won USO, Serena the French the year before even if their games weren't particularly overwhelming on that surface, there is always injuries, early upsets that make a path easier for aplayer to get in a scoop a slam. Dementieva might be inspired one of these days and win a slam.

Sharpie is falling fast in the rankings to be a real possible Russian GS winner.
I'm sorry TeeRexx, but I will STRONGLY disagree with that comment about Sharapova. I mean, she only 16!!! WTF are you talking about? Just because she's falling in the rankings now does not mean anything. You've seen how ANY player can develop themselve into a great one (Eg. : Justine, etc. etc.) and the fact that she's only 16 and she's already in the top30 having won a tournament makes her a BIGGER contender than any other russian.

Not that she's Russian, but wasn't Hantuchova the next-big-thing on the tour at 16? :p

Sorry if you were offended, but don't bet your life savings on her winning a GS title anytime soon.

None of the top Russian girls are going to win slams unless they get *really* lucky - Most of them don't have the mental strength...Myskina has showed from time to time that she can be dangerous against Kim and Justine, but in the big matches she doesn't seem to have the belief.

Sharapova's still real young so have to wait and see with her. She seems focused and determined, but still needs to mature her game if she wants to move to that level.

Kuznetsova's made good strides this past year, becoming a lot more consistent which is why she's moved her ranking up and picked up some bigger wins finally. She's the one with the biggest chance of the current girls IMO, because she moves well, and has weapons. No major weakness to her game, just needs to keep building on being more consistent (backhand, more first serves, and experience of knowing when to play the right shot).

The rest are all talented but I doubt will win any slams as long as the top girls are there (Justine, Kim, Serena, Venus primarily of course).

Vera Zvonareva = this year French Open (Rolland Garros) :hearts: :hearts:    My dream will become true!!!
Kuznetsova= next year Rolland Garros
Myskina= Next year Wimbledon
The others, like Shara,Kirilenko,Safina = we must wait at least 3 years!!
Petrova = I don't know ,she has a good game, she is strong physically but I have a bad feeling about her! I don't think she'll EVER WIN A GS! (But I hope I am wrong)

I think Kuznetsova is the most likely of this group to win a GS for all the reasnons Randy H stated. She has a very good all round game, can play on any surface and is still only 18 and improving rapidly. I also think it benefits her that she has a highly experienced team working with her in the the Sanchez family. She is very close to her mentor ASV and to her coach Emilio and it seems to be a very stable relationship. Having that kind of experience and stability can really help a young player develop their full potential.

Cheap shot (and you misread Tee's question anyway). :( Yes, there are "race posters" here, black and white.... and Tee isn't One Of them! He affectionately calls Elena D. "Legs" and DID give a Russian pick ITT. Anna was ONCE a Slam contender. I seriously doubt her loyal fans expect one from her in the future.

What the @#$*??????

2001 AO: Jen wins with Venus, Serena, Monica, Davenport, Kim, Hingis, and Henin all in the draw, and a pretty darn good service profile, firing aces against Monica, Davenport, and Hingis..... She in fact beat the #1 and #2 seeds/players in the world to get the title!:worship:

2001 FO: Jen again wins with Venus, Serena, Henin, Hingis, Davenport, and Kim all in the draw. (beats Serena, hingis, and Kim in succession to capture title)

2002 AO: Jen wins with Venus, Monica, Hingis, Mauresmo, Kim, and Henin all in the draw. Jen had some service yips, but still was overall strong eneogh to beat this tough draw. (Momo in the Qtrs, Kim in SF, and HIngis in Finals)

2002 FO: Serena destroys the field which includes Jen, Venus, Monica, Henin, Dokic (top 10 at the time)... and her game was pretty much at its top level at that point as she reeled off Scottsdale, Miami, FO, Wimbly, USO......

2003 USO: this one I'll give you, Justine got lucky..... No serena, venus.... And Jen & Kim both folded under pressure.

I'm sorry, but Dementieva an't EVER winning a Slam with that serve... she needs to improve that or she is toast every time.

Petrova SHOULD win a slam with her skills, but I think she doesnt have it mentally and is injured too much.

I would bet on Myskina to be the first to break through, since she leads the pack as far as titles and ranking, and takes extreme pride in being the top Russian.....though Maria may catch her if her game continues to mature (she certainly has the desire!)

Svetlana has shown some promise, but she'll need to be more consistent week and week out to be a real threat.

The one no one is talking about is Bovina, who could be a real suprize. She has already won a mixed-doubles Slam Title this year at the AO, and with her big serve and superb volley game, she should be a contender at Wimbly. If she can get more consistent week in and week out, she has a very bright future ahead of her IMO:wavey:

I wont say anything about Sharapova because I have never seen her play, only heard about it on the board.

The other group? Lets see? If you'd asked around the time of the US Open 2000, I would have said Dementieva. She seems to have digressed quite a lot.

I would say none of those people are going to win slams, unless the other crop of players who are much better, marginally better or marginally worse are injured or some other weird thing happens. Then again it just might be soon because weird things keep happening in the WTA.

No one has it all together to deserve a slam. It would be a serious fluke!

Anyway, back on the topic, the concensus seems to be that a Russian may win a GS title by 2007, she will be blonde, but not necessarily from the current group of blondes. :)

Maybe Sharpie will realize that she will have to weigh more than 90 lbs. to win a slam.

She could easily win doubles Slams, though. :)
