...
1- because age has caught up with them and success on the field ain't there any more;
2- because, though young, they realize they can't compete any more;
3- because they have better things to do in life, eg, business, family;
4- because their injuries are too much to bear and most likely will prevent them from reaching their old form.
5- their recent comeback ain't working as expected.

Let me start this guesswork:

1- Maureen Drake, Amanda Coetzer (hasn't she yet?), Frazier, Mashona W.;
2- Stevenson;
3- quite a few;
4- maybe Mary Pierce, Chanda (I hope not);
5- Martina Nav (she said this year would be her last anyway).

!! Please, in your answers, state the applicable category #'s !!

Depending on how the rest of the year goes for her, Conchita Martinez.I was thinking about her for list #1, but recently she's been having an amazing rejuvenation and success on the field. She most likely will go on beyond a year.

Caroline Maes? :unsure:

well she hasn't had any good results this year and if this continues she will drop out of the top300 (where she has been for I don't know 2 years already)
so if that happens, she might retire (I guess, I hope not)

:lol: A pretty weird list. Not trying to be mean, but that's impossible! Maybe some on your list will retired Jen or Landsay (since they are the oldest in there!) but others are too young to retire. :shrug:

i don't think conchita will retire just yet. i think she'd holding out for another really good run at a Slam (Paris), because she knows she would kick herself if she didn't have a go whilst she's still playing like a top-10 player on clay.

if things go pear-shaped for her between May and September, then I think she might call it quits, but if she can get herself near the top-10, then she'll probably continue.

She could overtake Arantxa on the all-time wins list if she plays for another 2 years with decent-ish. She's only about 50 wins behind.

Monica Seles - If the Great One can get healthy and put together good performances in the GS and Tier I events, then she will call it quits at the end of the year.

Lindsay Davenport - That clock is ticking loudly and Lindsay wants to put down the sword and shield and get started on a family. so, if she begins to have a sub par year, say good bye to Big Davey at year's end.

Jennifer Capriati - She has already retired, but she just doesn't seem to know it yet. She has her GS titles and dough and just wants to get back to some more serious partying on a full-time basis.

Anna Kournikova - She has already retired, but just hasn't told her mom yet. Anna has her money and fame and is now ready to become a B-list celeb and tennis trivia answer.

Martinan Navratilova - She will never retire. :lol:

If Monica does well she will retire.
If Lindsay does well she won't retire. (BTW the same clock is ticking for both of them, married or not.)

Two different reactions to the same result. It's possible... but how would you know that, Tee? Do you read tea leaves, no pun intended? ;)

I don't think Mashona will ever retire either. She is yet to crack the top 100 in so many years -- Mashona she is a top 100 floater, who sits at about 150-200 every year!
From 1996-2003 = 369 237 166 130 142 134 109 199

Isn't Mashy from a rich family?

Amy is back inside the top 50, she may never quit either. Good results -- hasn't lost in the first round yet this year.

Monica has been hinting at quiting, but she doesn't want to ease out the back door, but rather play some respectable tennis so that she may go out as a capable champion.

It seems that Lindsay is playing better than even she expected and she is in good physical shape right now. If Lindsay was having a year like Capriati, she would probably announce her retirement at Wimbey and end it all at the U.S. Open.

My tea leaves have told me all of this info. :p :lol:

Exactly. I'm not sure why anyone thinks Mashona should retire. Shes actually been getting excellent results this year compared to last year, where she fell out of the top 200.

I dont know why people think Alex should retire either. At least shes still in the top 150, not like Muller who fell out of the top 300! And even now Muller is getting her form back, shouldnt Alex be given a chance? Spadea had something like a 20 match losing streak but now hes back in the top 30 and having good results. Slumps are only temporary and shouldnt be a reason to quit!

Andrew.

Lindsay has basically said herself through kind of involuntary slips that she will play through 2005. Her great results this year probably have encouraged her more. She's said in interviews about her schedule that she'd play the tournaments she needs to this year, and next year play all the ones she wants to (like a farewell tour IMO). So I think 2005 will be her last year, but not 2004.

Jennifer will probably continue to play for a few more years but will fall out of the top 10 this year and probably the top 20 or 30 by the end of her career.

Chanda will probably call it quits this year. She's injured and has trouble beating anyone in the top 10.

Coetzer is most certainly out. She hasn't played since the 2r loss in Acapulco and has dropped big time in the rankings.

Sometimes they can Ovalap On a "life decision" though. An injury can heal, then "go" again (See Schwartz, B. and her chronic wrist problems, for example). Or One can get the urge again, ala Le Lyoness or Martina I.

A Comeback Can be discouraging @ First For one accustomed to success. Personal Finances Fluctuate. A new longterm relationship makes tennis less important. A loved one gets very sick. Or any combination of such things.

You can even create a completely new category.

The idea is we want to know why you think a player should/could/will retire.

Sometimes its hard to say why, one can just sorta "feel" that someone's lost "It" In general. While Lisa is 30 and Jen is 28, I don't sense that. With some others mentioned, I do. And Add Iva to my probables list, Mary To The maybes.
