Williams's walkover gives Mauresmo her first title of 2004 and the 11th of her career. The Frenchwoman was set to appear in her third Berlin final, having finished runner-up as a 65th-ranked qualifier in 1998 (her first Tour singles final) and winning her first Tier I crown in 2001.

"It's a strange feeling winning the tournament without playing," Mauresmo said. "I don't know what words to use. In a way I am disappointed because I wanted to play in another (match).
