just wondering if someone can translate this interview, please.

Ste prva dame ameriške reprezentanka in favoritinja v vseh vaših nastopih.

http://www.siol.net/novice/XP_Images/15010304042315331480-1.jpg
Osvojili ste že olimpijsko kolajno, letos jo boste "naskakovali" ponovno ...
V Avstraliji sem cel turnir odigrala odlično in osvojila zlato. Takrat se sploh nisem zavedala, kaj to pomeni. Sedaj vem, da je to nekaj največ, kar lahko športnik doseže. In jaz sem to že dosegla!

Venus Williams: Focusing on every point

Eventhough it was almost impossible to reach American tennis star Venus Williams at first, it was totally different after the draw was done. Venus was walking without a care through hotel where the draw was taking place and was willing to talk to the media. So she also talked for SiOL.

Venus, who has been first on the WTA tennis rankings in the past has won 29 titles in her professional tennis career, 4 of them grand slams. She also has a gold Olympic tennis medal from Sydney.

You won a tournament in Charleston last week, after 14 months of »draught«. Did you play as good as you would like?
No. I am a perfectionist, so I'm almost never satisfied with my play. But it's really nice to have won a tournament, it gave me confidence that every athlete needs. It also means I will have an easier time performing at next tournaments and at fed cup.

You are aiming for the top; this year already?
I don't think there is a player that wouldn't like to be first lady of tennis. Of course I'm interested in this and I will do everything to return to the top of women's tennis. But it will be more difficult than the first time when I just »flew« to the top.

What do you expect from your matches against Slovenians?
I just want to play good tennis here. I will be concentrating on every point, sum of them will bring me and my team the important victory.

You are first lady of American tennis team and a favourite in all your matches. Is this a burden to you?
I don't feel any pressure at all, when I step to the court I have to give all and play as I can. When I'm playing relaxed, I play well, good and success and victory can't escape me. I must add I am proud I can play for my team.

You have already won an olympic medal, you will be trying for new one this year …

In Australia I played great for the whole tournament and I won gold. I didn’t know at that time what that ment . I know now that it the most any athlete can achieve. And I have already done it. Yes, I want a gold medal this year too, although I know the competition is even stronger. On top of that, last time I just went to play that tournament and this year I will be under much more pressure. But there is a long time until then and I have a lot of big tournaments and fed cup to play before.

During your successful tennis career you tried yourself as a photo model. Will you continue with that after you retire from tennis?
That was just a positive experience, although I'm used to cameras. I wanted to know how is the work of a model and I admit I had fun. I don't know if I will do that after I retire. I am still playing tennis now, I am successful and I hope I have a long career. Tennis career of course.

What do you do in your spare time, although I believe there is not much of that for you?

I read, there is a lot you can learn from books. I also like to listen to music that also relaxes me in difficult moments.

So does this mean that the first tie will start at 6 am EST in America??

Raymond and Williams Fly USA Flag in Portoroz
The draw is as follows:

Tina PISNIK (SLO) v Lisa RAYMOND (USA)
Katarina SREBOTNIK (SLO) v Venus WILLIAMS (USA)
Tina Pisnik (SLO) v Venus WILLIAMS (USA)
Katarina SREBOTNIK (SLO) v Lisa RAYMOND (USA)
Tina KRIZAN/Katarina SREBOTNIK (SLO) v Martina NAVRATILOVA/Lisa RAYMOND (USA)

Slovenian tennis has never known anything like it: the might of the United States rolling into town for a first round Fed Cup tie complete with Venus Williams as their number one singles player, nine-time Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova playing doubles, and if that wasn’t enough, Billie Jean King as their coach to help Zina Garrison in her first tie as captain.

If the Slovenians are daunted by the proposition, they are not showing it. When the official draw was made and their number one player Tina Pisnik drawn out first to play the opening rubber against United States number two Lisa Raymond, Slovenian captain Mima Jausovec threw her arms into the air and said "Yes!".

The general consensus is that Slovenia needs to win the opening rubber to stand a chance, given the knowledge that Williams is a strong favourite to win both of her singles matches. Pisnik against Raymond would appear to be Slovenia’s opportunity, something which Jausovec confirmed as she explained her reaction to the draw.

"It’s just that Tina Pisnik likes to play first - she likes the atmosphere, she likes it when something is happening and she is very strong-minded," said Jausovec. "Especially with there being an opening ceremony beforehand, everyone standing there and there being lots of emotions, she’s the one that wants to play first. Katarina (Srebotnik) prefers to have more time to prepare, so this was what we wanted – Tina first, Katarina second. We are looking for our chance, and Lisa Raymond is our chance. She’s a great player but our players are very good on clay, they’re playing at home, so that’s why we really want to get a good start."

Raymond didn’t seem shaken by the fact that Slovenia looked at her as a possible weak link. If anything, it seemed to strengthen her resolve.

"I want to go out, I want to play [first]," she said. "Maybe some of it is nervous energy, maybe some of it is excitement but I want to get out there, play well and get this team off to a good start."

For Garrison, making her debut as the United States captain, the reaction of her Slovenian counterpart appeared to come as a surprise, but she took it in her stride.

"Tina’s going to have her hands full because Lisa isn’t going to just roll over," said Garrison. "I’m a little more calm and reserved, so when Tina’s name came out first and I knew that she had to play Lisa, the fact is that I know Lisa is a true competitor and she’s going to do the best she can. I look at it as just one more match that we have to be competitive about."

The second match of the opening day will pit Srebotnik against Williams, and both women are looking forward to it.

"It means a lot – I will just try to do my best, fight for every point and hopefully make Venus work really hard," said Srebotnik. "Hopefully Tina will be able to get a win and Venus will feel more pressure. The ball is round and you never know what will happen. Maybe we will surprise people, ourselves as well."

Venus certainly did not look to be feeling any pressure. Wearing an enormous pair of hoop earrings that she said she had bought in Portoroz, Williams said it was a special feeling to be part of the team.

"It means a lot," she said. "If I didn’t want to be here I wouldn’t be here and for me it’s really important to support this whole Fed Cup event. This is the only time out of the year that I’m not just [playing] for Venus, I’m here for the whole team, for every player, and it’s not often I cheer for any other player as I will this week."

The reverse singles matches will be played on Sunday, with the doubles rubber last between Navratilova/Raymond and Srebotnik and Tina Krizan.

Great game Tina :D ! Really, it was one of the best matches I have ever seen her play (even tough she complained about not enough concentration in her post match statement). She held her nerves so well! If it was a long rally it mostly went to Tina and she won quite some points with cute drop points ...

Lisa showed that she can play well at the net, but she's just not a claycourt player. But she played OK. Not agressive enough, in the critical points she was to cautious and waited for Tina's mistakes (and Tina didn't make a lot of them today :) ).

It was a lovely match to watch (not just because Tina won ;) ).

Now good luck to Katarina!

:( Now Tina is injured too!

Commentators on SLO TV just told she left the warm up this morning after 5 minutes, feeling pain (they were not specific). They were waiting for confirmation of her playing today and 4 minutes ago they say she will play, she got pain killers, but she didn't warm up ...

Poor Tina, she was the only Slovenian player without injury this year!

First set:

at the start Venus was hardly geting and 1. serves in; Tina played great, many winners, mostly with dropshots (it must have been 5 or 6 in the first 3 games) and lobs (at least 3 won her a point). Then Venus got used to it and started moving better. In the last couple of games of the set Tina got tight and mada too many unforced erors. Venus was playing better as the set went on, she also started serving much better, but it was still competative (not so much in the last 2 games).

maya, thanks for the info, Is Katarina OK to play? What bee?!

Injury timeout was for her neck (she's just giving interview on TV). She says she doesn't know exactly what it it, fed cup doctors told her something about it, but it was too complicated (and in English), so she doesn't know right now exactly what it is (she said: "I need subtitles for their diagnosis" :p ).

I was suspecting it was the neck from the start because she wore her collar turned so it protected her neck from the wind and she was adjusting it a lot ...

Five minutes with American superstar Venus Williams:

Just a girl that works hard

What was your first thought when you saw the draw for the 1. round of fed cup. Or the opportunity to explore new countries?

I was happy about the draw. I wanted to come here. I like exploring new countries, especially the ones that most people don’t know much about. Most Americans wouldn’t visit Slovenia as tourists so this is very exciting for me. And exotic. It’s very nice here.

Little less than a week ago you lifted another trophy after more than 14 – month draught. Did you feel anything like when you first won a tournament?

I was very happy to have won again, especially since I have lost the first set to Conchita Martinez. I’m doing better day by day, that’s also my goal in my career, always up. Even though in Charleston it was very different than my first tournament win, when I was telling myself, “oh god, this is my first final”, I was well aware that I had many experience with such situations and I used that experience well.

Were you very disappointed when your return to tour didn’t go as well as planned?

Even after my return in Australia I had problems with injuries, so it wasn’t easy for me at all. I have to be always careful because of that, but that’s what sport is like.

Did you follow tennis while you were injured?

So so, not too much. I only concentrate on mine and Serena’s results and nothing else. I watched some matches on TV, because I enjoy it, but I didn’t go to any tournaments.

What is your opinion on the Belgian players Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters, that took the throne while you and your sister were away?

The thing they achieved is not only good for them but also for their country. One thing is most important: you don’t reach the top if you don’t deserve it. Work is hard, but they both endured it and got what they worked for in the end.

Will Williams sisters rule tennis again?

We are on the way towards it, but we have played only few tournaments this year so it wasn’t possible so far. But we are working on it.

Your team colleague is Martina Navratilova, 47 years old. Can you see yourself in tennis at that age?

No, because my game will not be as good when I’m that old. Martina is unbelievable, very disciplined, trains hard and is still prepared well enough so she can compete. I won’t be in that kind of form at 47, because I don’t have that kind of discipline and I will surely eat to much sweets. I can’t now, but when I finish my career, I will eat many. All the time.

Are you now, when you are returning to tennis 100% focused on it or do you have time for hobbies?

I am always totally committed to tennis, but I can’t focus only on it, I have to distribute my energy. I have to be in motion all the time, perform many different tasks, otherwise I would be bored. I have enough time for it because I can’t be still for even a moment.

You are one of the most influential, successful and wealthy female athletes or women in the world. How do you feel with all the superlatives?

As a girl that works hard. No differently. I don’t know why, that’s just the way it is. Every moment when I wake up it’s the same thing – hard practice. But it’s my job.

Your next goal is probably 1. place of the world rankings where you once were?

Sure. My first goal is always to win the next match awaiting me. I won’t get to the top of WTA rankings tomorrow or next week, it will take me some tournaments.

Martina Navratilova, one of the greatest tennis players of all times:

Tennis ball doesn’t know age discrimination

Mrs. Navratilova, what drives you to keep playing tennis after all those years?
The life itself is a motivation. If you feel alive you will do your job well. Days go bye, none of them will return so you must use all of them to their fullest. That’s all I need to keep going.

What’s the secret of such an excellent physical condition at age 47?
Healthy lifestyle I watch my diet, eat what my body needs, I try to keep it (body) as “clean” as possible. It’s hard, because we are on the road all the time, but if you have enough money, you can have a healthy and at the same time tasty. We must be aware that the things we give to our body are the main reason of how our body feels, be it good or bad. We pay too little attention to this, and causes of most diseases are in what we do or don’t eat. That’s very important. Of course I also work hard, I train a lot, but you can’t do this if you don’t have the proper “fuel”.

What was the key to the success in all of this years? How did you follow all the changes that happened in tennis?
The ability to adapt to changes is very important, readiness to learn new things and to change. If I still played as I did 30 years ago I wouldn’t be able to compete anymore. You have to go with the flow, master new techniques of playing, change training methods, everything. But with every new step you have to be able to keep everything that was good before and still is and change everything that doesn’t work anymore in new conditions. I had to master new way of playing, get used to new racquets, equipment … all those that are good for a long period of time, have the ability to develop themselves along with the sport.

At the start of your career did you in your wildest dreams think you can achieve everything that you did?
Nobody thinks about career at the beginning. When you choose a sport you just want to be as good as possible. I wanted to win Wimbledon, everything else was a bonus.

And how do you feel as a living legend?
I don’t think about it, I always focus on the next task. You can’t live in the past, what matters is the present. I hope the future will be even better than the past.

What’s the achievement you are most proud of?
I wouldn’t use the word “proud”, but I could say a favour some wins, even though I don’t like to ponder on the past too much as I’ve said before. I could say my favourite win was the time I first beat my grandmother. Because I knew right away I will be very good. With wins it’s like with dogs if you have more of them. You don’t have a favourite, you like all of them.

What about Wimbledon?
Sure it’s a special tournament for me, but I couldn’t pick my favourite win.

Do you remember Stuttgart 1981?
What should I rememberi?

You won a doubles tournament with Slovenian capitain Mima Jaušovec.
Really? I didn’t know that. Interesting information, I will remember it.

Is the match against Slovenia your last in the fed cup competition?
Not neccesairily. I don’t know if the capitain will put me on the team in the next round. So it doesn’t depend only on me. But any match can be my last so I try my hardest every time.

How do you feel playing on the team where some other players were not even born yet when you won your first tournament?
Oh, this happens now everywhere nomatter where or who I play. I don't think about it and I think those I play against don't think about it either. We are all tennis playeres, it doesn't matter where we come from or how old are we. Tennis ball doesn't know that and doesn't distinguish between players.

Is this your first time in Slovenia?
Yes, I was already in Split and Venice, this is somewhere inbetween.

First impressions?
People are nice, food is great, just the trip here was a sort of an adventure, but we reached Portorož in the end. So everything is OK now.

And how will the meeting of Slovenia and USA end?
I don't give predictions. You will see on Saturday and Sunday.

Tina after the match (my translation from Slovenian, just a part that was posted on SiOL) - to clear up about the injuries and bees ;) :

Tina Pisnik: "I really enjoyed the match, I hope players did too At the warm up for the match I felt a sharp pain in the neck, that then got completely stiff (the neck), so I couldn't move my head. With the help of physiotherapist I managed to get prepared for the match, but it hindered me in my play. It's hard to say if I could fight Venus better if I didn't have problems with the neck. We will never know. Venus started a bit confused, she vas most likely surprised by strong wind, but she improved quickly and showed she is a top player.«
